여러분 안녕하세요, Shaped by Dog에 오신 것을 환영합니다. 저는 수잔 개럿입니다. 오늘은 이름에 대해 이야기해 보려 합니다. 강아지나 반려견의 이름을 어떻게 지어야 할까요? 무엇을 고려해야 하고, 무엇을 피해야 할까요? 사실 저는 올해 새 강아지를 데려올 예정입니다. 정말 설레는 일이죠. 저는 남들과는 조금 다른 방식으로 이름을 짓습니다. 왜 제가 그렇게 하는지 그 이유를 공유해 드리겠습니다. 아주 의도적인 과정이죠. 또한 구조견에 대해서도 이야기할 거예요. 개를 데려왔을 때 이름을 새로 지어야 할지, 기존 이름을 바꿔야 할지 고민되시죠? 어떤 경우에는 바꾸는 것을 강력히 추천하고, 어떤 경우에는 강력히 반대합니다. 먼저 이름을 지을 때 하지 말아야 할 것들에 대해 이야기하며 시작하겠습니다. 반려견의 이름을 고민할 때, 저는 종이에 이름을 적어두고 앞으로 사용할 다른 큐(cue)들도 함께 적어두는 것을 좋아합니다. 만약 여러분이 스포츠를 한다면, 저처럼 어질리티를 하는 경우, 저는 큰 실수를 저질렀습니다. 제 반려견 앙코르(Encore)와 사용할 모든 큐를 적어두지 않았거든요. 캐나다 내셔널 챔피언십 대회에 참가했을 때의 일입니다. 선두를 달리고 있었고 우승할 수도 있었죠. 마지막 종목은 갬블(gamble)이었는데, 그때까지 아무도 성공하지 못한 상태였습니다. 앙코르는 이제 그냥 가면 됐는데, 아, 앙코르는 어려운 부분은 이미 다 해냈거든요. 그냥 두 개의 점프대를 넘어 직진만 하면 됐는데, 그건 앙코르에게는 쉬운 일이었습니다. 문제없었죠. 하지만 예전 개들에게 갬블에서 저와 멀어지며 직진하라는 큐는 'go on(계속 가)'이었습니다. 그런데 앙코르의 별명은 '집중해'라는 의미로 'on'이었습니다. 그래서 저는 혼란을 피하려고 앙코르에게 'go on'이라는 말은 안 쓰려고 했었죠. 그런데 바로 그날 문제가 터졌습니다. 제가 'go on'이라고 말하자, 앙코르는 딱 멈춰 서서 뒤돌아 저에게 돌아왔습니다. 이름을 지을 때는 앞으로 사용할 큐와 충돌하지 않는지 꼭 확인해야 합니다. 이는 스포츠를 하시는 분들에게는 특히 더 중요한 사실입니다. 만약 평소에 '안 돼(no)'라는 말을 자주 쓰시는 분이라면 아마 강아지 이름을 '놈(gnome)'이라고 짓고 싶을 수도 있어요. 왜냐하면 강아지는 '놈, 야 놈' 하고 부르는 것처럼 들릴 테니까요. 아주 멋지게 들릴지 몰라도 강아지 입장에서는 주인이 항상 자기가 잘못했다고 말하는 것처럼 들릴 수 있어요. 이 팟캐스트를 듣는 분들은 강아지에게 '안 돼(no)'라는 말을 쓰지 않을 거라고 확신해요. 우리 중 많은 분들, 특히 스포츠를 즐기는 분들은 빠른 이름을 생각하겠죠. Hey everyone, welcome to Shaped by Dog. I am Susan Garrett. Today we're talking about names. How do you pick a name for your puppy or your dog? What you should consider, things you want to avoid. I'm actually getting a new puppy this year. It's exciting to me. I go about the naming process different than some. And I'm going to share with you why I do what I do. And it's very intentional. I'm also going to talk about rescue dogs. The question, do you name the dog, change the name that you have? And in some cases I would recommend strongly yes. In some cases I would recommend strongly no. I'm going to start off by talking about things I recommend you not do with a name. When you're thinking of names for your dog, I like to put them on a piece of paper and put down other cues that you know you're going to be using. Now, if you play a sport, like for me in agility, I made the big mistake. I didn't write down all my cues with my dog Encore. I was at a Canadian national championship event. I was in the lead. I could have won. The last event was the gamble. Nobody else had got the gamble up until this point. She only had to go, oh, she did the difficult part. She had to just keep driving straight over two jumps, which was the easy part for her. No problem. But my cue for my past dogs to go straight away from me in a gamble was go on. Now Encore's nickname, which meant give me your attention was on. So, I tried to avoid using go on with her because it causes conflict. And that's what happened on that day. I said, go on. She stopped dead, turned around and came back to me. You want to make sure when you pick a name that it isn't conflict with cues you're going to be using. That's something particularly true if you're playing sports. But like if you're somebody who uses the word no, probably you don't want to name your dog gnome. Because your dog's going to think that, you know, gnome, hey gnome might sound really cool until they think you're always telling them they're wrong. Nobody listening to this podcast used the word no with their dog. I'm pretty sure of that. A lot of us, for those of us who played sports, you would think of fast. Like they named them like manic and frenzy and, but when you name your dogs these kinds of names, two things. Number one, you have a subconscious idea of what frantic and frenzy is. And so, whether you mean to or not, you will be creating frantic and frenzy, which may not really be what you want for the sport that you're playing. I know that firsthand I named past dog. His registered name was high on emotion and I called him Buzz and he sure as heck was.

And so, I remember thinking when I was getting ready to get my next dog, I thought, well, anybody who has ever had a Buzz, you sure are going to want a decaf next. So, I named my next dog decaf and she was way decaffeinated. She was so laid back and soft and it took me years to get her to build drive. I learned that there's not just the subconscious thoughts of what we think in the name, there is energy attached to words. That might be a bit woo out there for some of you, but just consider what if. Here's some of the names that I've heard of dogs. A dog that grew to be very aggressive by the name of Killa. I've no dogs now. I don't know of these personalities, but I've heard of a dog being called toxic, one called ugly, one called thug. Vengeance is another dog like you. You've got to know these could be very, very lovely dogs, but there's a very good chance that you are not setting that dog up to be thought of in your eyes, which is most importantly, even subconsciously, is the dog that you really want them to be thinking of. So, my recommendation is be very conscious of what it is you want to conjure up, the image, the thought, or not. Call your dog Sally. And then it's just, yeah, this is like a good friend, just as long as you don't call them Karen in this day and age, right? Go and look up the meaning of that one. Another thing you should really be conscious of in today's climate is being very culturally sensitive. There's a term called cultural appropriation, which is taking something that is meaningful to one race, like the word chief. Calling your dog chief may be insensitive to Aboriginal people. Now, some may say, well, I'm actually showing appreciation for the culture. But it doesn't matter what your meaning or intent is. The meaning is how it's received by the race who you are trying to appreciate. So, why not just pick another name, another word? I was talking to a friend of mine, Nancy Guise. I asked her if I could tell this story and she said I could. She had a little Sheltie named Jinx. When Jinx was a puppy, he had almost all his teeth pulled out. And it turns out Jinx only had one testicle and Jinx only had one kidney. When Jinx fractured his third bone, Nancy decided to change his name from Jinx to Jack. Who knows if Jinx had some energy associated with him, but why take the chance? Why set out to set your dog up for those energetic possibilities, let's call them. Now, what if you get a rescue? I believe in almost all cases, you should change the name of the rescue dog that you get. There's a couple of reasons for

첫째, 이름은 단서(cue)입니다. 그리고 단서는 수많은 긍정적 유발 요인과 부정적 유발 요인과 연관됩니다. 따라서 만약 그 개가 구조된 상태라면, 이전 가족과 잘 지내지 못했을 가능성이 매우 매우 높습니다. 그리고 잘 지내지 못했다는 내력을 안다면, 분명히 이름을 바꾸고 싶을 것입니다. 그 이유는 그 이름이 아마도 이런 어조로 사용되었을 것이기 때문입니다. 많은 비난과 어쩌면 강아지에게 불쾌한 처벌이 따랐을 수도 있습니다. 그런 감정을 강아지와 함께하는 삶으로 이어가고 싶지는 않을 겁니다. 그러니 최소한 이름이 이미 오염되었을 가능성이 큽니다. 오염된다는 게 무슨 뜻일까요? 오염이란 강아지가 신호를 들었다는 뜻인데, 이름이 도대체 무슨 의미일까요? 우선 그 점부터 시작하죠. 제가 강아지의 이름을 부를 때는 '내게 집중해'라는 뜻입니다. 만약 저와 눈이 마주치지 않는다면 저와 눈이 마주칠 때까지 저를 찾으라는 의미입니다. 그래서 어질리티를 하는 강아지의 이름을 부르면 저는 그저 강아지가 저에게 집중해주길 바라는 겁니다. 집 안에서 이름을 부른다면 그저 제가 있는 방으로 와서 저에게 강아지의 위치를 알려달라는 뜻이죠. 이름은 '내게 집중해'라는 뜻입니다. 하지만 저는 그렇게 훈련하죠. 여러분도 강아지를 위해 어떻게 훈련할 수 있는지 곧 이야기할 겁니다. 저는 그렇게 훈련합니다. 대부분의 사람들은 그냥 이름을 부르기 시작하고 강아지는 반응을 하거나 하던 일을 계속합니다. 가족들은 그저 이름을 반복해서 계속 부르기만 하죠. 마치 찰리 브라운의 선생님 목소리처럼 들리는 거죠. 강아지들은 그냥 무시합니다. 만약 이름을 부를 때 여러분이 냉장고에 있거나 쿠키 통을 열고 있다면 강아지는 나타날 겁니다. 하지만 그렇지 않다면, 지금 하는 일이 더 좋다고 생각하면 강아지는 무시할 겁니다. 그걸 신호가 오염되었다고 합니다. 강아지에게 아무런 의미가 없게 만드는 것이죠. 그래서 자신이 하고 싶은 대로 해온 많은 구조견들은 이름이 오염되어 있습니다. 이 말을 들으면 '난 그냥 내 마음대로 해'라고 배운 강아지와 관계를 시작하고 싶지는 않을 겁니다. 그렇다면 구조견의 이름을 그대로 유지하라고 제안할 때는 언제일까요? 그건 아마도 매우 사랑받던 가족의 반려동물이었는데, 비극적이게도 주인이 세상을 떠났고 그 자리에 아무도 없을 때일 것입니다. 그 개를 입양할 가족에게요. 그 이름은 정말 좋은 추억이나 아주 잘 강화된 기억과 연관되어 있을 수 있습니다. 그런 경우에는 이름을 그대로 유지할 수도 있겠죠. 만약 이름을 바꾸고 싶다면, 아주 비슷한 소리로 시작하는 이름으로 바꾸는 게 좋습니다. 그렇죠? 그래야
it. Number one, names are cues. And cues get associated with either a lot of positive triggers or negative triggers. So, if the dog is in rescue, there's a very, very good chance he wasn't working out in the family that he was with. And if you know the history that he wasn't working out, you definitely want to change the name. The reason is that that name was likely used in a tone that was associated with a lot of blame, possibly some uncomfortable punishment for that dog. You don't want to carry that through to your life with that dog. So, definitely at the very least, the name has probably been poisoned. What does poisoning mean? Poisoning means that the dog heard the cue, which what does the name mean? Period. Let's start with that. When I say my dog's name, it means I want your attention. Now, if you can't see me in an eye line, that means find me until you can see me in an eye line. So, if my dog's doing agility and I say their name, I just want them to give me attention. If it's around the house and I say their name, I just want them to come into the same room I am in so I know where they are. It means give me your attention. However, I train that. We'll talk about how you can train that as well for your dogs. I train that. What most people do is just start using the name and the puppy or dog chooses to acknowledge it or keep going about their daily business. What the family does is they start saying the name over and over and over and over and it kind of turns like Charlie Brown's teacher, right? They just ignore it. If they hear you calling their name and you're in the refrigerator or opening a cookie jar, yeah, they'll show up. But if not, if they think what they're doing is better off, they will ignore it. That's called poisoning a cue. That's called making it not be meaningful to the dog. So, a lot of rescue dogs who have been naughty chosen to do what they want. Their name's poisoned. You don't want to start off a relationship with a dog who has learned when you say this word, I just do what I want. Now, when might I suggest keep that rescue dog's name the same? That would happen when let's say it was a very well-loved family pet and tragically their owner died and there was nobody in the family to take that dog on. That name may be associated with some really good memories and some really well-reinforced use. So, that might be a time where I would keep that name. And if you wanted to change it, I would change it to something that started very similar, right? That it isn't a dramatic

새 가정에 적응하는 개에게, 특히 노령견의 경우 극적인 변화가 되지 않으니까요. 최근에 테이터 샐러드(Tater Salad)가 우리 집에 왔을 때, 원래 이름은 샘슨(Samson)이었어요. 그 이름은 분명 무시당했던 기억과 연결되어 있었죠. 그래서, 킴에게 이름을 바꿔야겠다고 말했습니다. 그래서 제가 킴에게 이렇게 말했죠. 당신이 좋아하는 것을 생각해보라고요. 사실 우리는 그때 유럽에 있었거든요. 개의 이름은 즐거운 것이나 당신이 사랑하는 것, 혹은 사람들이 그 단어를 들었을 때 와, 그거 정말 좋다! 라고 반응할 만한 이름이어야 해요. 그래야 사람들이 당신의 개도 사랑하게 될 테니까요. 그게 바로 이름에 담고 싶은 에너지죠. 아니면 샐리(Sally)처럼 평범한 이름도 괜찮고요. 킴과 저는 이런 대화를 나누고 있었는데, 한 번은 제가 제안했죠. 덩치가 큰 불독이니까 밤밤(Bam Bam)이라고 부르자고요. 그런데 입 밖으로 내뱉자마자 내가 무슨 소리를 한 거지? 싶더라고요. 왜 우리가 이 개를 집에 데려오면서 '밤밤'이라고 생각하게 만들고 싶은 걸까요? 우리는 그때 식당에서 포장 음식을 기다리고 있었어요. 감자 으깬 요리가 한 접시 지나가더군요. 감자는 마침 킴이 가장 좋아하는 음식이었어요. 킴이 '감자(potato)!'라고 하더군요. 맞아요, 이름을 처음에는 장난삼아 포테이토라고 지어보자고 했죠. 그러다 킴이 '테이터(Tater)'라고 했어요. 테이터. 테이터라고 부르자고요. 그러자 코미디언 론 화이트의 '테이터 샐러드'라는 대사가 떠올랐죠. 그래서 '테이터 샐러드'로 해야겠다 싶었어요. 사람들은 나를 테이터 샐러드라고 부르지. 그렇게 해서 테이터 샐러드라는 이름이 탄생하게 된 겁니다. 그렇다면 강아지 이름을 지을 때는 어떨까요? 대부분의 사람들은 이렇게 말하죠. 아, 강아지 성격을 파악하고 어떤 녀석인지 알게 될 때까지는 이름을 짓지 않을 거야. 그런 다음에 이름을 붙여줄래. 아주 훌륭한 방법이죠. 하지만 저는 그렇게 하지 않습니다. 그렇지만 제 방식은 이렇습니다. 강아지 이름을 짓는 방식에는 옳고 그름이 없습니다. 하지만 제가 어떻게 하는지 그대로 공유해 드릴게요. 저는 제가 데려올 강아지에 대해 생각합니다. 구조견이 아니라면 부모견을 모두 알 경우 어떤 종류의 개가 될지, 또 어떤 성향일지 생각해보죠. 우리가 어떤 관계를 맺게 될지도 생각합니다. 이런 생각들을 머릿속에 담아두면 어디선가 강아지가 태어나기도 전에 이름이 떠오릅니다. 피처(Feature)의 이름도 그렇게 지어졌고, 앙코르(Encore)도 그렇게 이름을 얻었습니다. 스웨거(Swagger)도, 모멘텀(Momentum)도 마찬가지였죠. 그래서 저는 강아지가 태어나기 훨씬 전부터 이름을 정해둡니다. 그러고 나서 강아지들을 보러 가면, 마치 우주가 '이 강아지가 너를 기다리고 있는 아이야'라고 말해주는 것 같습니다. 강아지들 곁에 앉아 있을 때면 마치 제가 이렇게 묻는 것과 같습니다. '너희들 중에 누가 모멘텀이니?'라고요. 그럼 강아지들이 스스로 모습을 드러내죠. 다시 말하지만,
shift for the dog going into the new home, especially if it's a geriatric dog. Recently, when Tater Salad came into the house, his name was Samson. Definitely his name was associated with ignoring. And so, I said to Kim, all right, we need to change his name. So, this is what I said to Kim. Think of something that you love. We were actually in Europe at the time. The name of the dog should spark something fun or something you love or something that when people hear the word, they're going to go, oh, I love that. So, I will love your dog. That's the energy you would want associated with it. Or it's benign like Sally. Kim and I were having these conversations and at one time I had suggested, oh, he's a big bulldog. Let's call them Bam Bam. As soon as it came out of my mouth, I said, what am I saying? Why do we want this dog to come into this home and think Bam Bam? We're at a restaurant waiting for takeout at the time. A big plate of mashed potatoes went by. Potatoes happened to be Kim's favorite food. And she said, potatoes. Yes. Let's name the dog potato at first jokingly. And then she said, tater. Tater. We'll call him tater. And it reminded me of a stint from comic Ron White on tater salad. I'm like, tater salad, it's got to be. They call me tater salad. And that's how tater salad's name came to be. So, what about when I name a puppy? Most people, they say, oh, I'm not going to name that puppy until I get to know his personality and I get to know what he's like. And then I will give him a name. That's a great system. That's not the way I go about it though. Here's what I do. There is no right or wrong when you're, when it comes to how you name a puppy, but I'm just going to share with you exactly what I do. I think about the puppy I'm going to get, what I knowing both parents possibly, if it's not a rescue dog, what kind of dog it's going to be, what kind of relationship we're going to have. I just put these thoughts into my mind. And somewhere before the puppy's even born, a name comes to me. That's how Feature got her name. That's how Encore got her name. That's how Swagger got his name. And that's how Momentum got her name. And then, so now I have the name long before the puppy is born. And then when I go to see the litter, it's like the name came, the universe said, this is the puppy who's waiting for you. And then when I'm sitting with this litter of puppies, it's almost like I'm saying, which one of you is Momentum? And they show themselves to me. So again, maybe a little bit

woo for you, but that's exactly how my puppies get their name. I believe they always had their names and them, the puppy and I just find our way to each other. So, how can we make sure our puppy's name is meaningful to them? Number one, this is important if you have children. You can just build an association for that puppy with the words, Pup Pup. So, Pup Pup, give them a cookie. Tell your kids if you want to call the dog, just say Pup Pup. So, Pup Pup could be a nickname. But if you're going to use the dog's name, you always must have the magic key. And the magic key is a reinforcement. So, if I'm going to say the puppy's name, they're going to get a reinforcement. I'm only going to say their name when I know they're close by and they're going to want to turn and look at me, or maybe when I'm running away and they're going to chase me. So, that their name is always associated with a reinforcement at least for the first week or two. So, they hear the name and they give you what I call that head whip reaction. Yeah, the name has meaning. And then you're not going to use that name unless you know that dog is going to choose to look in your direction at the very least. Now, all of my dogs have nicknames. I'm going to do exactly the same thing with the nickname. I'll use it and give reinforcement and use it and give reinforcement. And therefore, not only the name, but the nicknames will always be meaningful to your dogs. That's all I got to say about naming your dog. This has been Shaped by Dog.
