what I call a training leash a four to six foot training leash this is one of our four foot training leads you'll notice that they're relatively lightweight this isn't meant for walking your dog around or folding your dog back from things it's meant for kind of more subtle manipulation and training it's light it's easy and it doesn't have a loop on the end so in a perfect world whatever leash you have for your dog for training won't have a hand loop on the end and we drop the leashes a lot and move the dogs around with luring and food and the ones that Luke's have a tendency to catch on things as we go so I need a leash you'll need a long line as well this is a synthetic long line but you can have one out of cotton or nylon whatever's convenient this is a 12-footer I would say you want one that's 10 to 20 feet long in that range 20 feets probably longer than we'll use in this class but outside of the class you might want a slightly longer one for recall work we're gonna be doing our recall work during this class relatively close up right but a long line as well then you're gonna want some kind of something to hold your training treats in so the early stages of the class we're going to be doing a fair amount of stuff with food right and so here's a couple of versions of eight pouches right so this is a small bait pouch this is slightly larger one this type of bait pouch is really nice because it has bring loaded things you can open it or you can clip it shut and so if you're running around a lot of the bait pouches that stay open like this one sometimes treats flop out of them as they go but bait pouch or a training type vest with pockets in it then you can stick food into there you can get it out easily these are these little aprons that gap a makes lots of our students really like these they buckle around your waist instead of a training vest and they have pockets all the way around for you to stick stuff in these are all this type of things also really nice you can get by with like a hardware apron you get from Home Depot or any of those sorts of things anything where you can keep your kind of treats in it easily get them out and they don't fall out as you move around obviously you're going to need some kind of training treat as well we'll talk on the first day of class about what kind of appropriate treats our size shape palatability and it's gonna be different from dog to dog different dogs like different things and their levels of food motivation are higher or lower but here's a couple of common training treats that we use this is one of the classic treat rolls there are a variety of companies that make

these they were originally sort of designed to be dog food and now people use them as training treats you can cut them up into pieces this is happy Howie's roll but there's Red Barn roll over Winkle pet Botanica there's a ton of different ones right so you can experimental it the nice thing about Treat rolls like this is you can cut them up in the size piece that you want right so they're not super difficult to control piece sizes so some dogs need smaller pieces sometimes need slightly larger pieces you can vary that as you need to and most dogs find them relatively palatable there's some pre-made things like Gil Jack comes pelleted see a lot of people are very good these are super popular dogs like these there's a wide variety we'll talk a little more about this and some experimentation on your end may be necessary to figure out what works best for your dog we're also going to need what I say in there called elevated foot targets that means it's something and we can teach the dog to put its feet up on that'll be stable and won't move around very much we use these rubber livestock feed pan flip it upside down alright and we teach these they come in different sizes I'm a larger dog I'd get a bigger one a smaller dog I'd go to the smaller one in the beginning stages it tends to be a little easier if your targets bigger lots of things can substitute for this I've seen people use stone pavers or a box flipped upside down as long as it doesn't move around very much and make noise a lot of different things will work you want them to be somewhere in the neighborhood of six to twelve inches across somewhere in that range right and they're raised up off the ground because we're going to teach use this for our basic target work in class then in there I said you need a line set up for a line luring drill we do ours with a long line but you could easily do this with a string piece of cord anything you want a couple of chairs so you can see here here's ours strung between two chairs as we go and we you can do you could be as I said a piece of string and a piece of cord rope stretched between any two objects that will hold it we generally have them 10 to 15 feet long something like that final thing I mentioned in there that you need a space where you can move around with good footing and of appropriate size and you would want the space to be like I said 10 to 15 feet probably wide at minimum and no less than 25 feet long right because we're gonna need to move back and forth we're gonna do some short recall drills there's some sections where we're gonna do a little bit of play with dogs and room to move around

safely and comfortably is important right so in here obviously we have a rubber mat and floors but any place that has good footing that won't be slippery for you and the dog right so you're not gonna fall down not lumpy nothing for you to trip over any of those kinds of things and clear of stuff so if you're moving around you're not tripping on things or running into things and that space will be important for you ideally also that space should be relatively free of distractions obviously we won't need all of this equipment on the first day of class so we move forward we can talk more about that so if you don't have the perfect piece of equipment for one of these things you'll have a little bit of time to access it as the class goes on and you may try something out in the beginning and say I want to shift to something else and if you have questions you can certainly email us or when class starts on Monday you can ask us thanks very much and I look forward to seeing you all you guys on Monday take care
