이 질문은 제가 모든 반려견에게 땅 파기가 훌륭한 활동이라고 말했던 인리치먼트 시리즈에서 들어왔습니다. 그래서 질문은, 반려견이 뒷마당에 구멍을 파지 못하게 하려면 어떻게 해야 하느냐는 것입니다. 첫째, 이미 뒷마당에 구멍을 파고 있는 반려견들에 대해 이야기하는 경우입니다. 둘째, 땅 파는 법을 가르치려는 반려견들에 대해 이야기하는 경우입니다. 그렇다면 만약 아이들이 여기저기 아무 곳에나 땅을 파기 시작하면 어떡해야 할까요? 먼저 여러분이 듣고 싶지 않을 수도 있는 이야기를 서두로 꺼내겠습니다. 저는 반려견들을 감독 없이 뒷마당에 혼자 두지 않습니다. 저는 그게 안전하지 않다고 생각하거든요. 많은 일이 일어날 수 있으니까요. 아이들이 무언가를 먹을 수도 있고요. 코요테가 나타날 수도 있죠. 굳이 그럴 필요가 없습니다. 그래서 제 반려견들은 밖에 나갈 때 배변만 하고, 바로 다시 안으로 들어옵니다. 하루에 여러 번 하는 산책을 나가는 경우를 제외하고는요. 제 개들은 비가 오나 눈이 오나 매일 최소 5km 이상 산책합니다. 그리고 집 안이나 여기 반려견 훈련 건물에서 많은 인리치먼트 활동을 합니다. 그래서 아이들은 아주 충만한 삶을 살고 있죠. 그렇긴 하지만, 여러분 중 대다수가 전문 반려견 훈련사가 아니라는 점은 잘 알고 있습니다. 하지만 그렇다고 해서 반려견을 감독 없이 뒷마당에 두지 않는 비슷한 상황을 만들 수 없다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 만약 여러분이 반려견에게 신호에 맞춰 땅을 파는 법을 가르치고 싶다면, 어떻게 할 수 있는지 짧은 영상을 기꺼이 만들어 보여드리겠습니다. 그걸 보고 싶으시다면 댓글로 알려주세요. 여러분의 반려견에게 신호에 맞춰 땅 파는 법을 가르치는 방법을 알려드릴게요. 두 번째, 반려견이 여기저기 구멍을 파지 않길 바란다면 상황을 어떻게 바꿔야 할까요? 음, 눈 방지용 울타리 같은 것을 설치하거나 반려견이 땅을 파길 원하는 작은 구역을 울타리로 막아보세요. 반려견을 강화(보상)하세요. 그 구역에 모래를 좀 넣어주면 반려견이 이곳이 바로 내가 땅을 파도 되는 표면이구나 하고 알 수 있을 거예요. 그 구역에서 땅을 파면 보상을 해주세요. 그런 다음 그 구역을 조금씩 넓혀가세요. 그리고 반려견이 땅을 파려고 할 때 보호자님도 밖에 함께 있어야 합니다. 만약 지정된 구역이 아닌 다른 곳에서 땅을 파기 시작하면, 다시 원래 구역으로 데려오세요. 이곳이 땅을 파는 곳이라는 인식을 강화해주세요. 다른 곳은 안 됩니다. 다른 곳에서는 땅을 파고 싶어 하지 않는다는 것이 확실해질 때까지는 반려견이 접근할 수 있는 구역을 넓히지 마세요. 네, 그건 보호자님이 계속 감독해야 한다는 뜻입니다. 그럼 제가 없을 때 반려견이 마당 곳곳에 구멍을 파지 않도록 가르치려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 반려견이 식물을 먹지 못하게 하거나 옆집 개와 울타리를 사이에 두고 싸우지 않게 가르치는 것과 같은 방법입니다. 사실상 불가능합니다. 보호자님이 자리에 없으면 반려견은 스스로 즐길 거리를 찾게 될 것입니다.
This question came in on our enrichment series where I said digging is a great activity for all dogs. And so the question is, how do I stop my dogs from digging holes in the backyard? Now, number one, we're talking about dogs who are already digging holes in the backyard. Or number two, we're talking about dogs we're going to teach them to dig. And then what if they start digging in all different places? So I'm going to preface this by something you might not going to want to hear in that. I don't let my dogs be outside in the backyard unsupervised. I just think that's unsafe. There's a lot of things that could happen. They could eat something. Coyote could happen by. It's just not necessary. So when my dogs go outside, they relieve themselves. They come right back in. Unless we're going for a walk, which we do several times a day. My dogs walk a minimum of five kilometers or more every single day, rain or shine. And then they get a lot of enriching activities inside the house or here in the dog training building. And so they live a very full life. Having said that, I recognize that many of you, the vast majority of you are not professional dog trainers. But that doesn't mean you can't have a similar situation where your dogs don't have access to the backyard unsupervised. So if you would, number one, like to start to teach your dog to dig on cue, I'd be happy to do a short video to show you how that can happen. Number two, what if we want to change things for our dogs and we don't want them digging holes everywhere? Well, you would get like snow fencing or fence off a little area where you want the digging to happen. Reinforce the dog. Maybe put in some sand in that area where they can know this is the surface where I dig in. Reinforce them for digging in that area. And then make that area a little bit bigger. And if they dig, and you're going to be out there. So if they start digging anywhere but in that little area, you bring them back. Build up the reinforcement for this is where we dig. No other area. And you don't make that area they have access to bigger until they are trustworthy that you're not seeing them want to dig anywhere else. Yes, it means you have to supervise them. So how do I teach a dog not to dig holes all over my backyard when I'm not there? The same way you teach a dog not eat your plants and not to fence fight with a neighbor dog. It's virtually impossible. If you're not there, they're going to do, they're finding their own enrichment.

And their own enrichment will be digging where they want and eating what they want and fence fighting with a neighbor's dog. So I hope that you will supervise your dog in the backyard because it's safer. And because you keep a nice backyard and get them to dig where you want them to dig.
