Yesterday I turned 65…is this what love looks like? 🤔

Good Sunday morning, everybody. And as the title of this live tells you, it's my birthday. I turned 65 today and I wanted to do a live to, you know, when you hit a milestone birthday like this, it causes reflections. First of all, let me know if you can hear me, if the audio is working on this, there is a bee or a buzzing happening from my hair. So I'm going forward considering that you can hear me. I wanted to do this live because I woke up this morning, a lot of things ran through my brain. First thing I did was open a beautiful message from a very dear friend who just said such amazing things about me, about what my life has meant to him and to dog owners. And I consider this person a very dear friend of mine, but we met through dogs. And it had me thinking about if I was going to do a live today, what would be the most important message that I could share? Thinking of, I've probably been involved with dogs for more than 50 years because I trained my first trick to a dog when I was 13. Then I got into horses for a time before I got back into dogs. But I've been a professional dog trainer for almost 40 years. And I, and I'm like, what if I could share just an easy mantra for everybody who owns a dog that lives with a dog that if you live with a dog, then you're a dog trainer. I know it seems weird to say that some of us are dog trainers who really focus on becoming the best dog trainer we can be. Some people live with a dog and they don't realize they're a dog trainer, but the dog's learning from them. And I thought, what if there could be like one, a one line, easy to remember mantra that would guide everybody's interactions with their dogs, their training, their hanging out around the house. And I'm going to tell you two pivotal things that happened between my dogs and I yesterday that I was feeling a little bit bad about today. Tell you about those. Where did my guy go? Sometimes swagger decides he's not feeling it on our morning walk. And he just doubled, doubles back to the house and lays on the porch. And you know what? He has that right. So this is how my thought process started. I was thinking, what if somebody I deeply loved or I deeply respected their opinion? What if they were watching every single interaction I ever had with my dogs in everyday life or in the name of dog training? Like what? I got something in my eye now. While they were looking, could they say that that dog felt number one, safe? Number two, loved? Number three, would that dog say in that moment that they were happy that they got to spend their life with me?

And I'm like, if, if everything that I did with my dogs, because the two things I'm going to tell you about that happened yesterday, one was in the name of training and one was just a interaction around the house. And both of them, when I thought of them, made me a little bit sad. And that's what made me start thinking about this. I had a great conversation with one of my online students yesterday in Zoom. And he had a beautiful way of putting it. Now I'm going to say that, I'll preface this by saying this online student was deeply entrenched in e-collar training for the better part of his dog training life. He did bite sports. He still does bite sports. I can't remember what year he told me that he found crate games, which led him to recallers, which now he's in handling 360. And he's just a brilliant dog trainer who now chooses to lead a life of, of honoring his dog is the way he said it. I hope everyone looks at my interactions with my dogs and say, I'm honoring my dog. And depending on where you are in your dog training journey, that might seem so out there that might seem, Oh, we're just letting dogs run amok. And we're just giving every dog what they want. And that's not it at all. Just think about the four things that I said. If somebody, if somebody I loved and really respected their opinion was watching me interact with my dog in training or in everyday life, would they say, wow, I can tell that dog's well-loved. Number two, that dog is super engaged. Number three, that dog, God, the mosquitoes are really bad right now. That dog feels safe. And number four, that dog is so lucky to be sharing its life with me. That dog's entirely grateful and happy to be sharing their life with me. And when you think about, let's say you reacted in, in training in a way you had to, and maybe it's in a way that wouldn't fulfill the criteria I just mentioned. Are you doing it in the name of punishing a dog for something that's innately natural to them? So are you teaching your dog a behavior or are you simply punishing them for being a dog or even worse, punishing them for being your dog? Because dogs innately want to chase wildlife. Dogs innately want to scavenge in the garbage want to jump on visitors, but there's ways of teaching them not to do those things. So is that, is that, I think what I'm saying is any interaction that I have with my dog, can I say, can I say that somebody would look at that interaction between my dog and I as, and answer the question, is this what love looks like? And I mean that that's covering those four things that I already mentioned that the dog looks safe,

looks loved, looks engaged. And that dog is so lucky and happy to be living life as my dog. So I think as dog owners, there's too much focus on did that work? Did that training work? Mosquitoes are just killing me. And not enough interaction on who did I become in that interaction. So I know my 65 years on this earth has led me to be a much better person every year because I get to share my life with dogs. And because I have learned so many lessons about living life by living with dogs. And I think that if that was my guiding mantra, and I think I'd love, I'd love it for everybody who owned a dog. Your guiding mantra would be, is that what love looks like? Is that what love looks like? Is does my dog after that interaction, does that dog look loved, look safe, look thrilled that they are my dog and look engaged? Okay. You can see the mosquitoes. Okay. I'm going to share with you the two little interactions that happened with my dog. First one was I was training agility. I ran a course and in that course, profit knocked two bars. It was an awesome, fun run. And I had a group of people training with me. We all get together on Saturdays and kind of cheer each other on and help each other with ideas. So we set up this hard course and profit nailed it. And I came off of it thinking those two bars were both on slices. I think one was a back. They might've both been backside slices. Um, and I thought I was in his way. So, um, but after it was all done, I thought, Oh, I'm going to just do a couple, one jump to a, to a slice. And when I looked at my video, when it was all done, um, so I went in real time, he knocked the, he knocked the bar on the slice. So I just said, go line up, which is a fun, engaging game for him to go back to the first jump. He knocked it the second time. I said, go line up. He kept the bar up. Um, so I rewarded it, but it wasn't what I would call a pretty jump. Um, so I repeated it counting. There were three slices in the course and he kept one bar up. Um, this is the data that I collected. He kept, he kept one of the three bars up and I really believe I was in his way. Although he probably could have kept that bar, the other two up. Um, so then I did another, um, seven, seven, um, repetitions. And of those seven, he kept the bar up two times. So when he had two failures in a row, I told him, go line up. And then I threw the toy to reward him for going to line up because he didn't get reinforced twice because he knocked the bar. I actually gave him the toy. We played, I told him, go line up and I threw the toy again. So two reinforcements.

But when I look back on that, it shouldn't have been seven extra jumps with five of those being failures. The feedback should have been very clear to me after the third jump, either he saw, which I think he was a little bit, or this isn't a skill that I put a lot of focus into in the last three months. And it hasn't been, I've been focusing a lot on, we do tons of junk grids with him, but not focusing on slices. Either way, when I look back on, when I was putting that video together last night, um, I can't say that I would say that's what love looked like. The other one was an interaction that happened with swagger. Swagger is 15 and a half. Every day, my dogs go on their respond systems, pemp fed. We have a little, we have a little station with two pemp beds. They actually love because they, they get a, they get a cookie when they get on the bed. But so that really drives their behavior to want to be in line. Well, swagger was hanging out with me all day, so we didn't get a time on the pemp bed. So it was now like afternoon and getting close to the time that they get fed. So I was eating my dinner. And, um, one of the girls put him on the bed. He was very fussy. He whined, he barked. And I, you know, just turned because I was right beside him. And normally if I'm there, he's, he doesn't make a peep because he just wants to be with me. And I said, knock it off. And I went back to eating and I must've told him, knock it off three or four times. I mean, at one point I said, Hey, maybe he has to go to the bathroom. And the girls said, you know, it's dinner time. He's just, he knows he's, he's, he can read the clock and he is great at his time management of the clock and food. But when his 30 minutes was up on the pemp bed, I said, listen, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. I'm going to let you out. He ran outside. He peed and pooped. Is that what love looks like? So I just, I just think that's such a great, a great, um, North star for all of us who own, owns and trains dogs. In your training, you might not know how to solve a problem in a way that looks like love, but that doesn't mean there isn't a solution for you. And that's why I encourage everyone to always be curious about their, what their dog's behaviors is telling them. Um, and when I think about the next 65 years in dog training for me, the first, my first, uh, 65 years has led me to be a place to really be obsessive about dog sports, a dog agility, obviously is my first love and helping people help their dogs live their best life as family pets. And when I think about what about

the next 65 years, I'm still going to be training dogs. And it's funny, I woke up this morning and thought, Oh, I'm going to do some sprint work today. There is a definitely an animal in the woods right there. Um, I got to do some sprint work today. I'm like, yeah, that's what most 65 year olds do on their birthday. Right. Um, I thought about my mom who passed away when she was 65. And I thought about, um, what will the next 65 years in dog training look like for me? And I think I'll be involved with dog agility for the rest of my life, but I have a feeling that my, my role in dog training is going to expand beyond what it is today. Um, I just think I see the universe sending me little signals telling me that there's more that I can contribute. And right now for the past two weeks, I've actually been exploring that as a possibility for me because wouldn't it be amazing if police dog training, every police dog that was trained, the trainer asked, is that what love look like? There's so many more avenues that we can help by asking like just a family pet who is annoying you. Are you snapping at that dog because they're doing something that is innately unique to them as a dog? Because that's not what love looks like. And I'm not saying we're all going to be perfect. Lord knows I'm not yesterday. I gave you two examples of things that I should have caught myself earlier on. But if we are reflective and we are curious, I think dogs are going to have an amazing life moving forward with the next 65 years. And I'm here for that. So I want to thank each and every one of you for whether you are a supporter of our podcast, Shaped by Dog, whether you're one of our online students, or whether you're just here because you're curious why this person put out a live asking, is this what love looks like? Thank you for being here. Thank you for helping dogs live their best life and here's to the next 65.
