Today's episode is a bit different than our typical episode. We're going to talk to a few folks about FDSA training camp. This year's camp is in Wilmington, Ohio, October 4th through 6th. And first up, we're going to chat a bit with Denise Fenzie. Hi, Denise. Welcome back to the podcast. Hey, Melissa. How are you doing? I'm doing all right. How about yourself? Pretty good. Do you want to start us off maybe by talking a bit about why FDSA organized the first training camp and what you feel maybe it adds to have an in-person event for an online school? The first one, because I was young and silly and didn't really know how much work it was about to be. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. And now, like everyone, that's code for, oh my God, get out of the room. Or another one is, I have an idea. That's a good reason to panic and run. I've gotten a little more restrained as time goes by. But at that first one, we just, I think we whipped it together in three months. And I don't even remember who said, oh, you should do a camp. And it was like, oh yeah, okay. And then there it was a weekend later. So that's how it happened with that much forethought and logic and planning. And then we ran with it. So that's how the first one happened. Why did it happen? I have no idea. Like I said, it just seemed like a good idea at the time. I know why it happened in years going forward, because it was an incredible experience to see so many people come together and put names to faces. And the camaraderie was just through the roof, which is really, I think the thing that distinguishes our event from many, many, many events is the degree to which there's camaraderie and friendships develop. So the reason we keep doing it is, I can't walk away from that. I can't walk away from that in-person opportunity to allow people to experience how awesome it is to be around relatively like-minded people who want to be with dogs, love dogs, have passionate about dogs. And that's why we continue. Do you have a favorite part of camp or favorite memory from our previous year's events? Yeah. So the one that stands out for me kind of epitomizes why I love camp so much. It was probably about the third camp, maybe fourth. And I was teaching a lab, a lab, not a Labrador. I was teaching, it was a workshop.

거기에 개 때문에 정말, 정말 힘들어하는 한 분이 계셨어요. 개는 완전히 주눅 들어 있었고 너무 힘들어해서, 그분은 개를 데리고 건물 안으로 들어오는 것조차 거의 불가능할 정도였죠. 그분을 가르쳤던 게 캠프 둘째 날이었던 것 같아요. 그렇게 많은 사람들이 한마음으로 그 여성분의 잘되기를 진심으로 바라는 모습은 처음 봤습니다. 사람들이 그 개가 잘해내기를 얼마나 간절히 바라는지 그 마음이 느껴질 정도였어요. 결국 주말이 끝날 때쯤에는 그분이 개와 함께 성공적인 결과를 만들어냈고, 그분도 눈물을 흘리셨죠. 그곳에 있던 다른 모든 사람들도 함께 울었고요. 그 말은 제게 큰 의미로 남았어요. 왜냐하면 캠프에 대해 제가 한 가지 깨달은 점이 있다면 사람들이 약자를 엄청나게 지지해준다는 거예요. 예전에는 저한테 쪽지를 보내서 "캠프에 오는 게 너무 두려워요"라고 말하는 사람들도 있었죠. "워킹 스팟을 신청했는데 바보같이 보일까 봐 걱정돼요." 첫해에도 말했지만, 이제는 수강생들을 잘 알기에 확신을 가지고 말씀드릴 수 있어요. 당신이 약자라면, 평생 살면서 이렇게 큰 지지와 사랑을 느껴본 적이 없을 거라고 장담합니다. 사람들은 당신이 잘되길 진심으로 바라고 있으니까요. 힘들어도 용기를 내어 도전하고 직접 행동으로 옮긴 사람들의 고충에 다들 깊이 공감하는 거죠. 그렇게 끝까지 해내는 모습 말이에요. 그래서 그 강아지와 함께했던 그분은 제가 캠프에서 가장 소중하게 생각하는 가치를 완벽하게 보여준 사례예요. 수강생들이 그 특별한 행사에서 어떻게 하나로 뭉치는지 잘 보여주었죠. 캠프에 대해 잘 모르거나 한 번도 와보지 않은 분들을 위해 캠프가 어떻게 운영되는지 조금 설명해주실 수 있나요? 그 부분은 질문인가요? 네, 겉보기에는 아주 정신없어 보일 수 있지만, 주최 측인 테리와 저, 그리고 에이미가 행사를 아주 체계적으로 만들기 위해 정말 열심히 노력하고 있어요. 행사는 3일 동안 6개의 트랙으로 진행됩니다. 즉, 매 시간 6개의 세션 중 하나를 선택해서 참여할 수 있다는 뜻이죠. 대부분의 세션은 실습 위주로 진행됩니다. 강아지들이 핸들러 및 인스트럭터와 함께 직접 훈련하는 방식이죠. 어떤 세션은 강의와 토론으로만 구성된 랩(lab) 형태로 진행되기도 합니다. 본인이 관심 있는 분야를 골라 들을 수 있는 선택지가 정말 많아요. 행동학, 복종 훈련, 랠리, 어질리티 중 무엇에 관심이 있든 중요하지 않습니다. 그저 강아지와 그 행동에 관심이 많아 비슷한 생각을 가진 사람들과 함께하고 싶은 분들이라면 누구든 환영입니다. 그런 자리가 바로 이 캠프거든요. 보고 할 만한 것들이 있어요. 그러니까 청강생이라면 기본적으로 따로 신청할 필요가 없습니다. 그냥 오시면 돼요. 물론 캠프 등록은 해야 하지만, 일단 오셔서 일정을 보고 나면 그때그때 원하는 것을 선택해서 볼 수 있습니다. 청강생들은 그런 식으로 운영됩니다.
And there was a person in there who was struggling terribly, terribly with her dog. The dog was just so shut down and having such a hard time, she really could barely get the dog in the building. And I think it was the second day of camp when I had her. And I have never seen a group of people so obviously united in wishing that woman well. And you could feel how hard they were willing that dog to be successful. And internally cheering for this person who did succeed with that dog by the end of the weekend and was in tears. And so was everyone else. And that stood with me because if there's one thing I've noticed about camp, it's that people support the underdog like there's nobody's business. Like people used to send me notes saying, I'm so scared to come to camp. I took a working spot and now I'm going to be a fool. And I said it the first year, but now I can, I knew it because I just know the students, but now I can say with authority, I guarantee you, if you are the underdog, you will never feel so much support and love in your entire life because people want you to be successful and they identify with the struggles of the person who showed up anyway, put themselves out there, even though it was hard and did the thing. And so I guess that particular woman with that particular dog, it epitomizes what I value so much about camp and the way the students come together at that particular event. Can you talk just a little bit about how camp works for people who maybe are less familiar with it or haven't been? Yeah, you would think it's a complete zoo, but the folks who organize it, Terry and you and me and Amy work really, really hard to create an event that's actually logical. It's three days of six tracks. So that means that any given time you could be in one of six different sessions. Some of the sessions, most of the sessions are working. So dogs are working with their handlers and with the instructor. Some of the sessions are just labs where they're all lecture and talking. But you have endless choices to go watch what really interests you. It doesn't matter that much if your interest is behavior or obedience or rally or agility, or you just are really fascinated by dogs and dog behavior and want to be in a place with others. There are things to watch and do. So you basically don't have to sign up if you're an auditor. You just show up. Well, you have to sign up for camp, but you show up and then you look at the schedule and you can decide what you want to see at any given occasion. So that's how it works for the auditors.

워킹 참가자는 미리 실습 수업을 선택하고 하루 네 개의 세션 중 두 개를 수행합니다. 매일 말이죠. 보통 그것으로 충분하고 하루가 끝나면 다들 녹초가 되죠. 그래서 딱 적당합니다. 네. 3일 동안 개에게 요구하기엔 꽤 많은 양이죠. 정말 그렇습니다. 네. 정말 그래요. 캠프 참여를 처음 고려하시거나 와본 적이 없는 분들이 가끔 답답해하시는 것 중 하나가 워킹 참가 자격을 얻기 위해 특정 횟수의 수업을 미리 들어야 한다는 요건이라는 걸 압니다. 이런 요건이 왜 생겼는지, 그리고 그 배경에 대해 조금 이야기해주실 수 있나요? 네. 온라인으로도 정말 많은 것을 배울 수 있습니다. 제가 그런 교육 과정을 운영하는 이유도 그 점을 믿기 때문이고요. 하지만 훈련이 진행되고 기술을 다듬어가는 과정에서는, 누군가 직접 다가와서 당신의 손을 잡고 특정 위치에 놓아주며 실시간으로 미세한 교정을 해주는 것이 엄청나게 가치 있을 때가 있습니다. 캠프의 목적은 우리 학생들을 지원하는 것입니다. 이미 우리 재단 교육 과정을 이수한 분들이죠. 피벗 디스크가 무엇인지, 어떻게 사용하는지 설명할 필요가 없는 분들입니다. 대부분의 경우, 실습장에 도착할 때쯤이면 이미 상당히 익숙해져 있습니다. 그렇죠. 네. 주제와 관련해서요. 그러니 이건 세부적인 부분을 다듬고, 연결하고, 중요할지도 모르는 사소한 것들을 알아차리는 문제입니다. 예를 들면, 아, 그런데 강아지가 고개를 왼쪽으로 많이 떨구는 걸 봤어요. 그 부분에 대해 제가 도와드릴까요? 당신이 무슨 말을 하는지 이해하는 사람들에게 정말 큰 도움이 되는, 완전히 대본에서 벗어난 일들을 할 수 있는 거죠. 그들은 당신과 같은 용어를 공유하니까요. 그건 적절한 사람들에게 적절한 시기에 손길을 내미는 문제입니다. 그리고 우리, 그러니까 더 숙련된 사용자들은 우리 수업을 많이 들었기 때문에 캠프를 통해 더 큰 이점을 얻을 수 있는 위치에 있다고 생각합니다. 그리고 청강생들에게도 경험의 질을 높여주죠. 왜냐하면 어떤 실습에서든 놀라운 범위의 기술들을 보게 될 테니까요. 그래서 놀이 실습에서는 아무것도 모르는 강아지부터 모든 수업을 거쳐서 아주 작은 부분만 수정하면 되는 강아지까지 모두 보게 됩니다. 그래서 저는 모두가 '이해를 못 하겠어요'라고 말하며 서 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 흥미로운 경험이 된다고 생각합니다. 이 장난감을 가지고 뭘 해야 하지? 왜 이걸 하고 있지? 그들은 그런 걸 다 알고 있죠. 기초가 다져져 있으니까요. 이제 더 숙련된 수준에서 그걸 적용해 볼 겁니다. 그래서 올해도 실습 참가 자리는 슈퍼 유저들에게 모두 매진되었지만, 청강생들을 위한 제한된 수의 크레이트 자리는 마련해 두고 있습니다. 반려견을 캠프에 데려올까 고민하는 사람들이 고려해야 할 점에 대해 조금 이야기해 주실 수 있나요? 가장 중요한 건, 반려견을 데려온다면 그 반려견에 대한 책임을 져야 한다는 겁니다. 저희는 평화로운 크레이트 공간에 대해 꽤 엄격한 편입니다. 무엇이든 가능한 한 조용하게 유지해야 합니다. 강아지가 크레이트에 편안하게 머무를 수 있어야 합니다. 크레이트 안에서 짖거나 불안해하면 다른 사람들의 실습을 방해할 수 있으니까요.
The workers do pick their labs in advance and they work two out of four of the sessions each day. Usually that's plenty and they're exhausted by the end. So it works out just about right. Yeah. It's a lot to ask of a dog for three days. It really is. Yeah. It really is. I know one of the things that sometimes frustrates folks who are, you know, considering camp for the first time or haven't been before is the requirement for working spots to have a certain number of classes before they can qualify for a working spot. Can you talk a little bit about, you know, how, why, you know, basically where that came from and why it exists? Yeah. You can learn an awful lot online. I mean, I wouldn't have a school devoted to that if I didn't believe that. However, as you progress in your training and as you are refining things, it can sometimes be incredibly valuable to have somebody walk up, pick up your hand, place it in a certain place and give you a tiny correction in real time. And the purpose of camp is to support our student base. These are already people who have our foundation skills. Like I don't have to explain what a pivot disc is or how to use it. Most of the time, by the time somebody shows up in a given lab, they're pretty familiar with the topic. So it's really a matter of refining the details, connecting, noticing small things that might matter. Like, oh, by the way, I noticed that your dog drops its head a lot to the left. Do you want me to help you with that? Like you can do things that are just completely off script that really benefit people who understand what you're talking about. They share your vocabulary. It's a matter of touching the right people at the right time. And I think our, let's call them more sophisticated users because they've taken so many classes with us, are in a better place to benefit from camp. And it also, for the auditors, improves the quality of the experience because you're going to see an incredible range of skills in any given lab. So in a play lab, you're going to see everything from dogs that don't have a clue to dogs who've been through all the classes and just need the smallest bit of tweaking. So I think it makes it a much more interesting experience than everybody kind of standing around saying, I don't understand. What am I going to do with this toy? Why am I doing this? They get all that. The foundation is there. Now we're going to apply it at a more sophisticated level. So working spots did sell out to super users again this year, but we allow a limited number of creating spots for auditors.

반려견이 캠프 환경을 즐길 수 있는지도 정말 중요하죠. 낯선 사람들과 많은 강아지들로 가득한 환경이니까요. 모든 강아지가 그런 환경을 좋아하는 건 아니거든요. 그래서 강아지에게 이 경험이 정말 좋은 것인지, 아니면 스트레스만 주는 것인지 잘 판단해야 합니다. 저희가 엄격한 이유는 그것이 모든 개들이 쉬고 잠을 잘 수 있게 해주기 때문입니다. 사실 저희는 케이지 구역에 모니터를 설치해 두었습니다. 각자의 케이지 위에는 보호자의 전화번호가 붙어 있습니다. 만약 반려견이 힘들어하면, 반려견을 진정시키도록 돕기 위해 보호자분께 연락을 드릴 것입니다. 이건 단지 여러분의 반려견만을 위한 일이 아닙니다. 케이지 구역에서 한 마리의 개라도 불안해하면, 상황이 꽤 빠르게 엉망이 될 수 있습니다. 그러다 보면 어느새 전체 구역이 소란스러워질 수 있죠. 그런 일은 일어나지 않습니다. FDSA 캠프의 케이지 구역 한가운데에 핀을 떨어뜨려 보면 알 수 있듯이, 매우 조용하고 평온한 개들을 많이 볼 수 있을 겁니다. 저희는 그런 상태를 유지하고 싶습니다. 그래서 청강생이시라면 가장 중요한 점은, 우선 개의 입장에서 생각해 보았을 때 이곳은 여러분의 반려견이 3일 동안 하루 8시간에서 10시간씩 조용히 케이지에 머물 수 있는지 확인하는 장소가 아니라는 점입니다. 개에게는 길고 힘든 하루가 될 것입니다. 도그 쇼나 반려견 훈련 수업 등 어떤 방식으로든 이미 많은 경험을 쌓으셨을 것이라 생각하며, 반려견이 조용히 케이지에 머물 수 있다는 걸 알고 계실 겁니다. 캠프에 왔는데 이보다 더 좌절스러운 상황은 없을 테니까요. 여러분은 청강 자격으로 참여하고 싶으실 겁니다. 지켜보고 싶으실 거고요. 배우고 싶으실 겁니다. 그런데 계속 반려견 때문에 불려 나가게 된다면 어떨까요? 그건 여러분을 매우 불행하고 좌절하게 만들 것입니다. 그리고 그건 반려견의 잘못이 아닙니다. 아직 준비되지 않은 경험을 하도록 반려견을 데려왔다면, 모든 시간을 그렇게 허비하게 될 것이고 여러분은 좌절하게 될 것입니다. 저희는 그런 일이 일어나길 원치 않습니다. 그러니 가장 중요한 건, 반려견이 케이지 안에서 아주 조용히 지낼 수 있어야 한다는 점입니다. 두 번째로 자문해 볼 수 있는 질문은, 왜 반려견을 데려오려고 하느냐는 것입니다. 현실적인 대답은 많은 사람이 어쩔 수 없다고 말하는 것입니다. 집에서 개를 돌봐줄 사람이 없거든요. 그건 타당한 이유죠, 맞나요? 하지만 반려견의 관점에서는 별로 즐거운 일이 아닐 수 있다는 점을 인지해야 합니다. 넓은 반려견 공원 같은 곳은 아니니까요. 반려견은 대부분의 시간을 크레이트 안에서 보내게 됩니다. 그러다 당신과 함께 나와서 잠깐 운동을 하거나 점심시간 등을 이용하게 되겠죠. 반려견에 대한 당신의 책임이 훨씬 커지는 겁니다. 그러니 이런 점들을 생각하고 알고 있어야 합니다. 저는 반려견과 함께 이벤트에 참관할 때 쉬는 시간이나 점심시간에 반려견을 훈련하기로 선택합니다. 방해가 되지 않는다면 그렇게 해도 좋습니다.
Can you talk a little bit about what somebody should consider if they're thinking of bringing their dog along to camp? The big one is if you bring your dog, then you need to be responsible for your dog. And we're pretty strict about a peaceful crating area. And the reason we're strict is because it allows all the dogs to rest and sleep. We actually have monitors in the crating area. We have each person's phone number on the top of their crate. And if your dog is struggling, you will be called back to help your dog settle. This isn't just about your dog. If one dog is distressed in the crating area, things can pretty quickly unravel. And then the next thing you know, the whole area is in, you know, up in arms. That does not happen. At FDSA camp, you could drop a pin in the middle of the crating area and you will observe a whole lot of quiet, peaceful dogs. We want to keep it that way. So the most important thing, if you're an auditor, first, from the dog's point of view, this isn't the place to find out if your dog can crate quietly for three days for eight, 10 hours a day. It is a long, intense day for your dog. One assumes that you have had a lot of experience somehow, whether at dog events, dog training classes or whatever, and you know that your dog can crate quietly because nothing is going to be quite so frustrating to you as to show up in camp. You want to attend auditing slots. You want to watch. You want to learn. And you keep getting called back to your dog. That's going to make you very unhappy and frustrated. And it's not your dog's fault. If you've taken your dog to an experience that they're not ready for, then that's how you're going to spend all your time and you're going to be kind of frustrated. We don't want that to happen. So the most important thing, your dog should be able to crate very quietly. The second question you might want to ask is, why are you bringing your dog? The pragmatic answer is a lot of people are like, I don't have a choice. I don't have anybody at home to take care of my dog. Hey, that's legitimate, right? But be aware that from the dog's point of view, it's probably not a lot of fun. It's not like it's a big old dog park or something. Your dog spends most of their time in a crate. Then they're going to come out with you and they get a little bit of exercise and maybe at lunch and all. Your responsibility is way higher to your dog. So these are things to think about and to know. When I audit an event with my dog, I do choose to work my dog at breaks and at lunch. And you can do that as long as you're not disruptive.

실습에서 본 내용을 관찰하며 직접 시도해 볼 수도 있죠. 그건 여러분에게 아주 좋은 기회입니다. 하지만 그런 시간은 실제 이벤트 중간에 이루어진다는 점을 알아두세요. 선택권이 있다면 이 점을 고려해 보는 것이 좋습니다. 선택권이 없다면 반려견이 해당 환경에 적합한지 결정해야 합니다. 제 생각에는 그런 부분들을 고민해 봐야 할 것 같습니다. 제가 마지막으로 참석했던 이벤트는 1, 2주 전 줄리 플래너리와 함께한 것이었습니다. 저는 반려견 두 마리를 모두 데리고 갔었죠. 한 마리는 계속 훈련 중이었고요. 남편이 오자마자 나머지 한 마리를 남편에게 맡기고 집으로 보냈습니다. 왜냐하면 3일 내내 브리타가 크레이트에 갇혀 있는 것은 즐거운 시간이 아니었을 테니까요. 첫날은 어쩔 수 없었지만요. 하지만 반려견을 동반하거나 동반하지 않고 참관해 본 경험 많은 참관인으로서 말씀드리자면, 개들의 배변을 신경 쓰거나 먹이를 주고 밖으로 데리고 나가는 일을 생각하지 않아도 되었을 때 훨씬 마음이 편했습니다. 조용히 시키기. 네, 맞아요. 그게 제가 생각하는 부분이에요. 적어도 올해 오하이오의 10월은 괜찮으니까요. 그러니까 누군가 차에서 크레이트 훈련이 필요하다면 날씨가 아주 나쁘지는 않다는 거죠, 맞나요? 하나의 선택지라는 거죠. 그럼요. 아, 물론이죠. 만약 당신의 반려견이 차 안에서 크레이트에 있는 것을 편안해한다면, 우리 강아지들 대부분이 그렇듯, 그리고 트렁크 문을 열고 적절한 메시망을 사용하는 등 알맞은 환경을 갖췄다면, 이 모든 건 분명히 타당한 선택지예요. 그럼 처음 참석을 고민 중이거나, 이미 등록하고 나서 '어머, 내가 무슨 일을 저지른 거지?'라고 걱정하는 사람들에게 한마디 조언을 해준다면 어떤 말을 해주고 싶으신가요? 무엇일까요? 가세요. 캠프에 갈 수 있다면, 갈 수 있을 만큼 가까이 있다면, 아니면 좀 멀더라도 갈 수만 있다면, 정말 다들 가길 잘했다고 생각할 거라고 말씀드리고 싶어요. 혼자 가세요. 걱정하지 마시고요. 아, 전 혼자서는 못 가요. 아니요, 할 수 있어요. 한 시간 안에 누군가 당신을 챙겨줄 거예요. 이 행사는 사람들이 혼자 앉아 있게 두는 그런 성격의 행사가 아니거든요. 절대 안 그래요. 사람들이 다가와서 데려갈 거예요. 함께 어울리게 될 거예요. 혼자 있고 싶은 게 아니라면, 당신이 누군지 궁금해하고 당신과 함께하고 싶어 하는 사람들로 금세 둘러싸이게 될 거예요. 이 행사는 교육적인 기회 그 이상을 제공합니다. 커뮤니티에 대한 것이죠. 그게 아주 중요해요. 제 세상에서 커뮤니티를 만드는 건 정말 엄청난 일이에요. 캠프가 끝나면 사람들이 정말 들떠 있고 행복해하는 걸 매번 봐요. 그들은 오직 언제 다시 이걸 할 수 있는지에 대해서만 이야기합니다. 왜냐하면 이것이 제가 시간을 보내고 싶은 방식이기 때문이죠. 이것이 제가 반려견 세계에 있는 이유입니다. 그냥 가서 무엇이 잘못될지 걱정하지 마세요. 참석할 수 있다면 꼭 오셨으면 좋겠습니다. 정말 멋지네요. 청취자분들에게 남기고 싶은 마지막 생각이나 핵심 포인트가 있나요?
You can certainly observe what you saw in a lab and give it a shot. You know, that's a wonderful opportunity for you. But do know that those are in between the actual events. And you might want to think about that if you have a choice. If you don't have a choice, then you have to decide if your dog is suitable for the environment. So I think that's kind of what I'd be thinking about. The last event I attended was a week or two ago with Julie Flannery. I had both dogs with me. I was working one dog continuously. And as soon as my husband showed up, I handed the second dog off to him and sent him home. Because for three days, Brita would not have had a good time being crated. The first day was not optional. But I can tell you as an experienced auditor with and without dogs, it was much more peaceful for me when I didn't have to be thinking about pottying dogs, feeding dogs, getting them out, keeping them quiet. So, yeah, that's what I would be thinking about. At least this year, it's October in Ohio. So, like, the weather's not terrible if somebody needs to car crate, right? Like, that is an option. But, yeah. Oh, absolutely. If your dog is comfortable car crating, and I think many of our dogs are, and you have an appropriate setup with your tailgate up, and you can use appropriate mesh, these are all absolutely legitimate options. So, if you had one word of advice or a piece of advice for somebody considering attending for the first time, or maybe they've signed up and now they're going, oh, goodness, what did I get myself into? What would it be? Go. If you can go to camp, if you are close enough to make your way there, if you're far away and you can do it, I will tell you, people are so glad they went. Go alone. Don't worry about it. Oh, I can't go by myself. Oh, yes, you can. Within an hour, you will be adopted. It's not the kind of an event where people are sitting alone. They're not. They will be picked up. They will be pulled in. Unless you want to be sitting alone, you will find yourself surrounded by interested people who want to know who you are, who want you to be there. It's an event that's so much more than the educational opportunity. It is about community. That is huge. Huge in my world is making a community. And I find that when camp is over, people are so high, so excited. All they can talk about is when are we going to do this again? Because this is how I want to spend my time. This is why I'm in the dog world. Just go and don't worry about what might go wrong. And if you can attend, we want you to be there. Awesome. Next up, we have Esther Zimmerman. Hi, Esther. Welcome to the podcast. Hi, Melissa. Thanks so much for having me. I'm super excited to chat about camp today. But before we jump in, do you want to just share a little bit about your training background, kind of what sports you compete in, and maybe what led you to FDSA? Sure. So I have been competing in AKC obedience trial since 1976. It's a very, very long time. It's coming up on 50 years. So I'm old. Congratulations. 50 years is a milestone. That's right. And I just turned 70. So there we are. So I've been competing nonstop since 1976. I do competition obedience. I do NACSW nose work. I do a little bit of rally. I've dabbled in some other activities, but not with any real interest. Agility doesn't speak to me. Fly ball doesn't speak to me. They're too noisy, too much running around for my taste. So AKC obedience is my main thing. I've been competing all those years. I've been a competition instructor since the early 1980s. And I am an AKC obedience judge approved for all classes. And I do love judging. It's hard work, but I love it. And that's my giving back a lot to the sport that's given me so much. My current dogs, I have. I've unfortunately lost two competition dogs within nine months of each other. Last year, at ages six and seven, one of my skipper keys and my golden retriever. So now I have Flyer, who's my two-and-a-half-year-old border collie. Yes, I got a border collie. And I just got a baby skipper key puppy. His name is Izzy. And he's very cute. He's very handsome. He has a tail. He came from Europe, so he has a tail, which doesn't happen often in the States. But I didn't want another dog with a dog tail. So he's full of it. And he's confident and outgoing and so far loves everybody and everything. So I'm pretty happy in the four days that I've had it. And I found FDSA. Before there was an FDSA, Denise came to do a seminar at my training facility, which I attended. And, well, everybody that knows her knows her personality gets you hooked on it immediately. I mean, the enthusiasm, the level of commitment to everything, the positive outlook on everything just spoke to me. Because I had already made the transition from being a quasi-traditional trainer to a really positive trainer. And she just validated everything that I was doing and gave me additional tools to apply to what I was already doing. So that's how I found FDSA.

FDSA가 생기기 전, 데니스(Denise)가 어질리티를 위해 강의를 할 때 온라인 클래스를 들었어요. 어질리티 강의 이름이 뭐였죠? 어질리티 유니버시티(Agility University)였나요? 그게 맞나요? 네. 네. 네. 그녀는 반려견과의 관계 맺기 및 놀이, 즉 반려견과의 개인적인 놀이 수업을 진행했었어요. 그게 FDSA 이전, 제가 그녀에게 처음 들은 수업이었죠. 그리고 저는 계속 수업을 듣고 있는데, 참 재미있어요. 캠프 등록이 시작되면요. 10개 이상의 수업이 필요하거든요. 제가 들은 수업 횟수만 따져봐도 적어도 15명은 캠프에 등록할 수 있었을 거예요. 수업을 거의 빠지지 않았으니까요. 네. 캠프 얘기가 나와서 말인데, 지금까지 캠프에는 몇 번이나 다녀오셨나요? 캠프에는 딱 두 번 가봤어요. 이동하는 게 가끔 힘들거든요. 그래서 올해 다시 갈 예정인 오하이오주의 멋진 로버츠 센터(Roberts Center)에 갔었죠. 세상에. 친구 엘렌(Ellen)이랑 차를 타고 다녀왔어요. 그 친구는 래브라도 리트리버를 데려갔고요. 저는 골든 리트리버를 데려갔죠. 그렇게 오하이오까지 차를 타고 가서 정말 최고의 시간을 보냈어요. 진짜 최고의 시간이었죠. 그리고 펜실베이니아 캠프도 갔는데, 제가 이곳 마스터피스 도그 트레이닝(Masterpiece Dog Training)의 강사라서 여기서 훈련받는 18명 정도에게 캠프에 꼭 가봐야 한다고 설득해서 같이 갔어요. 어딘가에 데니스와 함께 우리 모두가 찍은 단체 사진이 돌아다니고 있을 거예요. 아주 큰 단체 사진이죠. 정말 멋지네요. 정말, 정말 멋진 경험이었어요. 네. 두 번 다 워킹 스팟(실습 참여)으로 참가하셨나요? 네. 네, 그랬습니다. 제가 시도했던 것은 대면 수업을 듣는 것이었는데, 두 가지 방법을 시도해 봤어요. 강사가 제가 키우는 개에게 필요하다고 생각하는 구체적인 무언가를 가르치고 있다면 대면 수업을 들어보려고 했죠. 그리고 이전에 경험해 보지 못한 강사에게도 배워보고 싶었고요. 모든 사람에게 모든 것을 다 배울 수는 없으니까 일종의 실험으로요. 정말 훌륭한 강사들이 많지만 모든 사람에게 다 맞는 건 아니니까, 그분들과 우리가 잘 맞는지 알아볼 아주 좋은 방법이라고 생각했어요. 그래서 강사에 대해 더 많이 알수록 우리가 수업을 들을 때 만족도도 더 높아질 거예요. 맞아요. 이전에 온라인으로 함께 작업했던 강사에게 대면 피드백을 받는 것은 정말 귀중한 경험이죠. 말씀하신 대로 아직 만나보지 못한 강사를 알아갈 좋은 기회이기도 하고요. 네. 그래서 말씀드렸듯이 제 수강생 중 상당수가 FDSA 학생들입니다. 그들이 골드 레벨로 수업을 듣고 있다는 걸 알게 되면, 항상 여기서 숙제를 해야 하는지 물어봐요. 그래서 훈련 센터에서 영상을 촬영하고 제가 직접 피드백을 주기도 하죠. 저도 언젠가는 그 수업을 들었을 가능성이 높으니까요. 현장에서 바로 피드백을 받는 게 큰 도움이 되거든요. 그럼요.
And I took an online class with Denise before there was an FDSA when she was doing them for – what was the name of the agility? Agility University? Is that it? Yes. Yes. Yes. She did an engagement and play with your – personal play with your dog class. That was the first class I took with her before FDSA. And I've been taking – you know, it's funny. Registration is for a camp. You need more than 10 classes. At least 15 people could register off of the number of classes I – because there are very few semesters that I missed taking a class. Yes. So speaking of camp, how many times have you – have you made it out to camp so far? I've only made it to camp twice. Travels hard sometimes. So I was in Ohio where we're going again this year at the fabulous Roberts Center. Oh, my God. My friend Ellen and I did a road trip. She took her Labrador. I took my Golden Retriever. And we did a road trip out to Ohio and had just the best time. Really just the best time. And then Pennsylvania, because I'm an instructor here at Masterpiece Dog Training, I talked – I think something like 18 people that train here came to camp because I said they needed to go to camp. And somewhere floating around is a group picture of everybody from here with Denise. And it's a big group picture. That's awesome. It was very, very awesome. Yeah. Did you do working spots both times? Yes. Yes, I did. What I tried to do was take in-person – I tried two things. I tried to take in-person classes if an instructor was doing something specific to what I felt I needed for that dog. And if I wanted to try an instructor that I had no prior experience with. So as an experiment because you can't take everything from everybody. And I thought that would be a really, really good way to find out if we were a fit or not because so many excellent instructors, but they're not for every person. So the more we know about them, the better we will – the higher our satisfaction level will be when we're taking classes too. Absolutely. And sometimes it's just invaluable to get that in-person feedback with an instructor that maybe you have worked with before online or, you know, like you said, it's a good chance to get to know somebody who you haven't met yet. Yeah. So as I said, you know, so many of my students are FDSA students. And when I know they're taking a class at a gold spot, I always ask them, do you need to do some of your homework here? So we videotape it in the training center and I can give them in-person feedback because in all likelihood I've taken that class also at some point. And it helps in the moment to have that feedback. Absolutely.

You're right about that. Yeah. Yeah. Is there anything in particular that maybe stands out to you about camp that's led you to want to come back? Oh, the people. The people. The staff to a person are warm and encouraging and so willing to share their knowledge. They want everybody to be successful. Yeah. You don't hear a negative word from anybody regardless of what happens. It's, yeah, if you need a boost of positive energy, there's no better place to get it. And every single person is just fabulous. How Denise manages to accumulate so many great instructors and people? And over the years, because some have come, some have gone, right? There's been some turnover. But to a person, they're just the best. Why would anybody not want to go if you can possibly swing it? Yeah. It's the people. And then all the people that I'm friends with online, on the alumni group. Meeting people in person that you've only emailed with and messaged with, it's a kick. It's a real kick. And to see some of their dogs that you've only seen online, right? And you're like, oh, my God, that's Molly and Ernie. Everybody knows Molly and Ernie, right? Yeah. So that's always the best. And hugs. I'm a hugger. Uh-huh. So most of the instructors are big huggers, too. Amy's the best hugger ever. I'm sure she will feel very honored to hear that. Yeah. Well, she is. It's the play way, right? It's the hug way. I love that. Is there anything in particular that has kind of made an impact on, like, once you got back home in terms of, like, your training or your competing that you kind of learned at camp? So because I've been doing this for so long, I'm a little bit set in my ways. So if somebody has given me a, not only for my own training, but as an instructor, if somebody's given me a tweak that I can apply for my students, if somebody's got a slightly different approach to dealing with that particular issue, I'm always looking for those nuggets of information. Yeah. And it's, for me, again, because I think I come from a slightly different place than a lot of other people will be attending. You know, I'm not a newbie. I've been, I've gone to Clicker Expo. I've been to Camp Gone to the Dog. I've been to APDT conferences. I've been to conferences and seminars for decades now, right? And so I go looking for things for me. Other people may be intimidated by the whole process. Oh, my God, I'm actually going to work with shade in person. Oh, my God, what if I mess up? Yeah, there's none of that. There's none of that. But as far as what I bring home, it's encouragement for me as an instructor, validation for me as

문제 해결 방식에 대한 레퍼토리 확장, 그리고 제 반려견들을 위한 것들이죠, 그렇죠? 제 반려견들과 관련해서도 신경 쓸 일이 있으니까요. 플라이어(Flyer)는 제 첫 보더 콜리예요. 함께하는 여정이 참 흥미로웠죠. 네. 정말 많은 분들에게 좋은 조언을 많이 얻었습니다. 이제 곧 강아지도 데려올 예정이고요. 캠프 때는 9개월이 되겠네요. 그건 또 완전히 새로운 경험이 될 거예요. 정말 기대돼요. 그래서 그 나이대에는 제가 직접 제 반려견과 훈련하는 것에 대한 구체적인 조언을 구하게 될 거라 확신합니다. 아무리 경험이 많아도 가끔은 외부의 관점이 필요할 때가 있죠. 정말 그래요. 맞아요. 그리고 제가 사는 지역에서 제 시간과 노력을 투자할 만한 가치가 있는 수업을 찾기가 참 어려워요. 다들 저를 찾아오지만, 저는 누구를 찾아가야 할까요? 맞아요. 그게 좀 어렵죠. 그래서 제가 온라인 수업을 그렇게 많이 듣는 이유 중 하나이기도 해요. 가장 긍정적이고 진보적인 방식으로 훈련하는 지식 있는 사람들에게 배울 기회가 필요하니까요, 그렇죠? 맞아요. 항상 하시는 말씀처럼요. 그럼 당신의 수업을 들을까 고민 중인 분들께, 아직 등록하지 않았거나 여전히 망설이고 있는 분들께 조언 한마디 해주신다면 어떤 게 있을까요? 갈 수 있다면 가세요. 여건이 된다면, 어떻게든 가세요. 절대 후회하지 않을 거예요. 일정과 제공되는 프로그램 설명을 읽어보고, 관심 있는 사람이 누구인지, 어떤 시간대에 하는지 메모해 두세요. 청강생이라면 어느 세션이든 갈 수 있지만, 스스로를 너무 지치게 하지는 마세요. 모든 세션에 다 참석할 필요는 없어요. 스스로를 위한 시간을 가져도 돼요. 피곤해서 낮잠을 자야겠다면, 가서 낮잠을 자세요. 너무 무리하지는 말고, 새로운 아이디어, 새로운 경험, 새로운 사람들을 받아들일 준비를 하세요. 저는 워낙 외향적이고 사교적인 사람이라 그런 게 쉽지만, 많은 사람에게는 그런 게 안전지대 밖의 일일 수 있거든요. 그래도 가세요. 두려워하지 마세요. 누구도 여러분을 불친절하게 대하지 않을 거예요. 긍정적으로 말해볼까요. 모두가 여러분에게 아주 친절할 거예요. 그럼요. 그러니 안전지대에서 살짝 벗어나 볼 의지를 가져보세요. 네. 거기 오는 많은 사람도 아마 다른 사람들을 잘 모르는 경우가 많을 거예요. 하지만 다들 비슷한 마음으로 모인 거니까요. 맞아요. 네. 그럼요. 그럼요. 네. 그리고 두려워하지 마세요. 먼저 다가가서 말을 걸어보세요. 누군가 외로워 보인다면, 같이 있어 드릴까요? 라고 물어보세요. 같이 점심을 먹으며 앉아 있어 줄 사람을 찾으시나요? 라고요. 아니면 강아지와 함께 산책하러 나가는 사람에게도요. 같이 걸어도 될까요? 그것도 사람들과 친해지는 좋은 방법이죠. 만약 제가 스키퍼키를 데리고 있는 누군가를 본다면, 저는 그 사람을 꼭 알고 싶을 거예요. 그 사람이요. 맞아요. 맞아요. 그래서 저는 다가가서 저도 스키퍼키를 키운다고 말할 거예요.
an instructor, expanding my repertoire of problem-solving approaches to things, and for my own dogs, right? I do have things with my own dogs. You know, Flyer's my first border collie. He's been an interesting journey. Okay. And I've gotten so much good advice from so many people. And now I'm going to have my puppy. He'll be nine months old for camp. That's going to be another whole new thing. So exciting. So I'm sure at that age, I'll be looking for input on specific training things for myself with my own dog. Sometimes you just need that outside perspective, no matter how much experience you have. Totally. Totally. And it's hard for me to find classes that are worth my time and effort in my own area. Everybody comes to me, but who do I go to? Yeah. That's kind of hard. And that's one of the reasons I take so many classes online, because I need access to knowledgeable people who train in the most positive or progressive methods, right? Right. As you always say. So if you were to offer words of advice to somebody considering attending you, they haven't signed up yet, or they're still kind of on the fence, what would it be? If you can go, go. If you can swing it, by all means. You will not regret it. Read the schedules and the description of what's being offered, and make notes of who you're interested in, in which time slots. If you're auditing, you can go to any of them, but don't overwhelm yourself either. You don't have to go to something every single session. You can take time for yourself. If you're tired and you need to go take a nap, go take a nap. Don't overwhelm yourself, but make yourself available to new ideas, new experiences, new people. I'm a very outgoing and social person, so that's easy for me, but it's outside of the comfort zone for a lot of people. But go. Don't be afraid. Nobody's going to not be nice to you. Let's make that positive. Everybody will be very nice to you. Yeah. So be willing to put yourself outside your comfort zone a little bit. Yeah. I know that there are lots of people there who also maybe don't know a whole lot of other people, but you're all kind of coming at it from the same place, so. Yes. Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. And don't be afraid. Go up and talk to somebody. If they look like they're lonely, would you like some company? Would you like somebody to come and sit and have lunch with you? Or they're going out with their dog. Can I walk with you? You know, that's a good way to get to know people, too. Somebody is so, if I saw somebody else with a skipper key there, I would want to know that person. Right. Right. So I would go, I have a skipper key, too.

같이 산책하러 갈 수 있을까요? 로버츠 센터는 반려견과 산책하기에 정말 환상적인 곳이에요. 들판이 엄청나게 넓고, 강아지들이 뛰어놀 수 있는 울타리가 쳐진 구역도 있거든요. 정말 너무 아름다워요. 호텔 자체도 정말 좋고요. 네. 정말 좋아요. 정말 아주 좋죠. 네. 네. 객실은... 어쨌든 제가 하고 싶은 말은 이거예요. 갈 수 있다면 꼭 가세요. 그러니 자신의 안전지대에서 조금 벗어나서 새로운 사람들과 새로운 생각들에 마음을 열어보세요. 정말 좋아요. 좋아요. 에스더, 오늘 출연해 주셔서 정말 감사합니다. 이렇게 잠깐이라도 이야기를 나눌 수 있어서 기뻤어요. 천만에요. 정말 기대돼요. 저도 기대하고 있어요. 그럼 10월에 뵐게요. 강아지도 얼른 만나보고 싶네요. 알겠습니다. 감사합니다. 잘 지내세요. 조만간 또 이야기 나눠요. 팟캐스트에 카렌 디즈 님을 모셨습니다. 안녕하세요, 카렌 님. 팟캐스트에 오신 걸 환영합니다. 함께하게 되어 정말 기쁩니다. 잠시 이야기를 나눌 생각에 기대가 되네요. 우선 시작하기 전에, 어떤 훈련 배경을 가지고 계신지, 어떤 독 스포츠를 하시는지, 그리고 FDSA를 알게 된 계기가 무엇인지 말씀해 주시겠어요? 제가 FDSA를 알게 된 계기는 독 스포츠를 시작하면서부터였어요. 그전에는 하지 않았거든요. 그전에는 기본적으로 반려견 훈련을 했었죠. 워킹 독 훈련, 수색 및 구조견, 청각 장애 보조견 및 발작 대응견 훈련을 했고, 구조 단체나 동물 보호소와 많은 작업을 했습니다. 하지만 대부분은 반려견 훈련이었어요. 그러다 좀 예민한 성격의 붉은 털 골든 리트리버를 키우게 되었죠. 사실 드니스 님의 세미나에 처음 참석한 게 2012년인가, 대략 그쯤이었던 것 같아요. 잘 모르겠네요. 캠프가 생기기도 전인 아주 오래전 일이에요. 그때 그 친구와 훈련을 하는데 드니스 님이 저한테 '당신은 페라리를 가지고 있네요'라고 말했던 기억이 나요. 저는 '맙소사, 나는 쉐보레를 원했는데, 페라리 운전하는 법을 모르거든요'라고 했죠. 그래서 꽤 오랫동안 제 풋워크를 다듬는 데 시간을 보냈어요. 아무튼 그렇게 FDSA를 접하게 되었습니다. FDSA요. 사실 제가 드니스 님을 처음 만났을 때 그분이 FDSA를 시작했었는지조차 확실하지 않아요. 그냥 드니스 펜지였죠. 네, 맞아요. 아마 그때쯤이었던 것 같아요. 맞아요. 그 일이 있었을 때 바로 시작했던 것 같아요. 그래서 제가 초창기 멤버였던 것 같은 기분이 들어요. 그녀를 알아가고 그녀 밑에서 배우며 함께 훈련하는 것은 정말 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 그런 방식으로 말이죠. 그래서 저는 스포츠 쪽으로 발을 들이게 되었습니다. 제 작은 골든 리트리버와 함께 랠리 오비디언스를 했습니다. 결국 전국 대회 수준까지 출전하게 되었죠. 그게 언제였죠? 2017년이었습니다. 조지아주 페리에서 열린 랠리 내셔널 대회에서 160마리의 개 중 10위를 차지했는데, 제 첫 전국 대회였습니다. 아마 4년 동안 참가했는데 매년 상위 20위나 30위 안에는 들었던 것 같습니다.
Can we go for a walk together? And the Roberts Center is awesome for places to go walking with your dog. The fields are enormous, and there are fenced-in areas for people to let their dogs run. It's really, really gorgeous. And the hotel itself is really nice. Yeah. It's lovely. Really, really nice. Yeah. Yeah. The rooms are... But that's what I would say. If you can go, go. So push yourself outside of your comfort zone a little bit and be open to new people and new ideas. I love it. All right. Well, thank you so much, Esther, for coming on. So to start us off, do you want to just share a little bit about your training background, kind of what sports you play in, and what led you to FDSA? What led me to FDSA was that I got into sports. Prior to that, I wasn't. And prior to that, it was basically pet dog training. I did working dog stuff, search and rescue, service hearing seizure response, did a lot of work with rescue groups, humane societies. But the majority of it was pet dogs. And then I got this little redhead of a golden retriever who was kind of a little edgy thing. In fact, the first seminar I went to with Denise was in, oh, I'm in probably 2012, maybe, something like that. I don't know. It was a long time ago, before camps were even there. And I remember I'm out there working with her, and she says, you have a Ferrari. And I went, oh, good God, I wanted a Chevy, because I don't know how to drive a Ferrari. So we spent a good deal of time, you know, working on my footwork. Anyway, so that's what led me into FDSA. FDSA. And in fact, I'm not even sure that she had started FDSA when I saw her. She was just Denise Fenzie. I, man, yeah. It was probably right about that time, I would think. It was. I think it was right when that happened. So I feel like I was like on the ground floor. It was actually quite amazing stuff to get to know her and to work under her and play under her that way. But so that got me into the sports stuff. And I did rally in obedience with my little golden. And we ended up competing at the national level. What was it? 2017. We were 10th out of 160 dogs at rally nationals in Perry, Georgia, my first national. And we probably placed in the top 20 or 30 every year that we went, which I think was four years.

골든 리트리버 전국 대회도 몇 번 나갔고요. 큰 대회들도 좀 경험했죠. 텍사스에서 아마 첫 번째로 RAE 타이틀을 땄을 겁니다. 물론 아무도 정확히 기록하고 있지는 않아서 확인된 건 아니지만요. 어쨌든, 2년 전 5월 23일에 그 아이를 떠나보냈습니다. 거의 2년이 다 되어가네요. 그립습니다. 여전히 그 아이가 그립네요. 하지만 그 아이는 저의 유일한 스포츠 도그였습니다. 남편도 바이트 스포츠를 조금 해보면서 맛을 보았었죠. 그 덕분에 셰이드와 함께 일하게 되었습니다. 물론, 사라 브루스키도 있었고요. 한나 브래니건이 근처에 있을 때도 있었죠. 사라 스트러브맨도 활동할 때가 있었고요. 정말 멋진, 이른바 '쿨 키드' 세미나들을 쫓아다니곤 했어요. 물론 데니스가 세미나를 할 때는 당연히 참석했고요. 저는 그냥 세미나 중독자였어요. 잠시 스패니얼을 키우기도 했었고요. 하지만 잘 맞지 않았습니다. 그 아이가 제 첫 번째 진짜 장난감 중심의 개였어요. 그리고 지금은 함께 디스크 독을 하는 정말 활기찬 녀석을 키우고 있습니다. 보더 콜리 믹스견이에요. 확실히 장난감을 좋아하는 개입니다. 어쨌든, 제가 스포츠를 그만둔 뒤에 정말로 관심을 갖게 된 건 다름이 아니라 이제는 전혀 대회에 나가지 않기 때문입니다. 하지만 저는 반려견, 유기견, 작업견, 스포츠견을 통해 배운 모든 것을 문제 행동 교정견에게 적용해 왔습니다. 사실 제가 FDSA와 계속 함께하는 이유도 바로 그 때문이죠. 왜냐하면, 거기에는 정말 멋진 사람들이 많거든요. 그리고 저는 행동학 분야에 도움이 될 만한 새로운 것들을 정말 많이 배웠는데, 일반적인 행동학 컨퍼런스에서는 그런 논의가 잘 이루어지지 않는 것 같습니다. 이제는 말이죠. 여전히 똑같은 방식만 반복된다고 말하고 싶지는 않습니다. 하지만 어쨌든, 그런 관점에서 접근하면 행동학적 지식이 훨씬 더 깊어진다고 생각합니다. 그렇게 볼 때 말이죠. 10일 후에 있을 '반응성 통합(reactive integration)' 웨비나에서도 이 이야기를 다룰 예정입니다. 마치 다른 렌즈를 통해 반려견의 행동을 바라보는 것과 같거든요. 어쨌든, 저는 스포츠 활동은 하지 않습니다. 그런데 아이러니하게도, 한 달 동안 텍사스에 가서 세미나를 두 개나 진행하게 되었습니다. 그중 하나는 어질리티를 하는 분들을 위한 세미나입니다. 저는 평생 어질리티를 해본 적이 없습니다. 음, 하지만 그분들이 반려견의 행동이나 흥분 문제로 어려움을 겪고 있어서 저를 초청한 것입니다. 그리고 OTCH를 가진 사람들과도 함께 작업하게 되었죠. 세상에. 전 알고 싶지도 않아요. 저는 UD 타이틀 하나 있었어요. 아마도요. 겨우 했었나, 기억이 잘 안 나네요. UD 레그를 두 개만 땄던 것 같아요. 그러니 OTCH는 제 수준을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 거죠. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고, 행동 교정과 스포츠견을 다루면서 얻은 지식은 그건 아주 밀접하게 얽혀 있어요.
Went to golden nationals a couple of times. Did some of the big stuff. Was probably the first one to get a rock in Texas. Although that wasn't, that's not confirmed because nobody was really keeping track. But anyway, and I lost her May 23rd, two years ago. So it's been almost two years. And I miss her. And I miss her still. But she was my only sport dog. My husband did a little, he dabbled a little bit in bite sports. And that kind of got me into working with Shade. Of course, I would, Sarah Bruschi. Hannah Branigan when she was around. Sarah Strubman when she was around. I used to go to all the really cool, the cool kid seminars, right? And of course, Denise, when Denise was doing seminars. But I just, I mean, I was a seminar junkie. And I even ended up with a little, had a spaniel for a little while. And he didn't work out. And he was my first real toy dog. And then I got the crazy kid that I have now that I do some, some disc with. So he's a Border Collie mix. And he's definitely a toy dog. And so anyway, that's, but really what got me after sports, because like I say, I'm not competing at all anymore. But I've taken all the stuff that I've learned from pet dogs, shelter dogs, working dogs, sport dogs, and I've applied it to behavior dogs. And really that's, that's why I hang around with FDSA. Because I don't know, there's some pretty cool kids around there. And, and I, I've learned so much about new things that I think benefit the behavior world that I don't see the normal, I don't see it really talked about at the behavior conferences anymore. It's, I don't want to say it's still the same old, same old. But, but anyway, I think it just brings a lot more depth into behavior knowledge when you look at it from it. And I even talk about this in my webinar that's coming up in 10 days about reactive integration. And it's, it's, it's like looking at dog behavior from a different lens. And anyway, so I don't do sports. But what's ironic is I'm actually getting ready to go to Texas for a month and I'm doing two seminars. And one of them is for a bunch of agility people. I have never in my life done agility. Um, but they're having some behavior and arousal issues. So they are bringing me in. And then I'm working with a bunch of people that have otches. Jesus. I don't, I don't want to even know. I got a UD. Maybe. Did I, I barely, I know. I think I only got two legs of a UD. Um, so otch, that's like way out of my league. But yet again, the, the, the knowledge that comes from working with behavior and sport dogs, it's very intertwined.

어쨌든 저는 여러 스포츠 도그 관계자분들과 함께 일하게 될 텐데, 저는 스포츠 도그를 하는 사람들을 정말 좋아해요. 음, 아마 그분들이 다른 어떤 사람들보다 반려견에게 더 헌신적일 거예요. 그리고 사실 훈련에 파고들고 싶어 하는 반려견 보호자분들을 찾기가 때로는 정말 어렵거든요. 그러니까 뭐, 꼭 그래야만 하는 건 아니지만요. 그냥 제가 그러고 싶은 거예요. 뭐, 제 이야기는 여기까지예요. 충분히 이해해요. 그럴 만하네요. 음, 그럼 캠프에 관해 잠시 이야기를 나눠볼까요? 처음 참석하신 캠프는 언제였나요? 어떤 레벨로 참가하셨죠? 그때 이야기를 좀 해주세요. 저는 펜실베이니아에서 열린 첫 번째 '페럿 팔루자(Ferret Palooza)'에 갔었어요. 네. 음, 이 방송을 듣는 모든 분이 '페럿 팔루자'가 뭔지 아실 것 같지는 않네요. 배경 설명을 조금 해주셔야겠어요. 네. 그러니까 우리가 다들 드니스가 누군지 알잖아요, 그렇죠? 드니스가 '페럿(족제비)'이라는 별명을 얻게 되었거든요. 잠시도 가만히 있질 못해요. 끊임없이 계속, 계속, 계속, 계속 움직이죠. 그래서 그녀가 이런 아이디어를 냈는데, 정말 맹세컨대 두세 달 만에 그걸 다 준비해버렸어요. 도대체 어떻게 해낸 건지 지금도 모르겠어요. 음, 어쨌든 그녀가 행사를 열었고, 놀랍게도 저는 3일 동안 운전해서 갔죠. 제 작은 빨간 머리 강아지와 함께 저 혼자서요. 남편도 같이 가기로 했었는데, 그때 남편은 뭐랄까, 텍사스에서 큰 홍수가 난 뒤에 연방 정부 배치를 받아 수색 및 구조, 그리고 복구 작업을 하고 있었거든요. 그래서 혼자 운전해서 갔고, 아마 이틀이나 사흘 정도 걸렸던 것 같아요. 정말 엄청난 운전이었죠. 어, 하지만 그게 아주 초기 펜지 캠프였어요. 우리는 그걸 '페럿 팔루자'라고 불렀죠. 음, 그늘이요. 세상에, 낸시 리틀. 아, 세상에, 정말 낸시를 사랑해요. 음, 그녀는, 그녀는 아마도, 아, 낸시와 함께 일하는 게 너무 좋아요. 그들 모두와 함께 일하는 걸 사랑해요. 어쨌든 그래서 저는 펜실베이니아까지 차를 몰고 갔고 혼자 돌아오는 길에, 오하이오에 들러서 개 한 마리를 데려왔는데, 그 개가 나중에, 아프리카에서 코뿔소 뿔과 코끼리 상아를 찾는 보존 작업을 하러 가게 된 개였어요. 음, 맞아요, 저한테 그 개가 남긴 흉터가 하나 있어요. 그래서 세라를 다뤘던 사람들은 모두 '세라 흉터'를 가지고 있을 거예요. 왜냐하면 세라는 장난감을 잡으면 꽉 물었거든요. 어쨌든 그래서, 음, 그게 페럿 팔루자였고 3일 동안이었던 것 같아요. 우리가 지금 가는 곳에 비하면 비교적 작은 시설이었어요. 어, 제 생각엔 'K9 짐' 같은 이름이었던 것 같아요. 덥고 습했지만 정말 재밌었어요. 화장실이 하나, 화장실이 딱 하나 있었죠. 화장실이 하나였어요. 어, 제 생각엔 사람들이 나무 뒤로 가서 볼일을 보곤 했던 것 같아요. 음, 어쨌든, 정말 죽여줬어요. 주최 측 호텔 같은 건 있지도 않았던 것 같아요. 잘 모르겠어요, 기억이 안 나네요. 그게 2015년이었어요. 아주 첫 번째였죠. 맞아요. 거기 갔었죠.
And so anyway, so I'm going to be working with a bunch of sport people and I, I love the sport people. Um, I think they're probably more dedicated to their dogs and a lot of others. Um, and it's really hard sometimes to find pet dog people that want to kind of geek out. And so, you know, I don't, I don't have to geek out. I just want to. So anyway, that's me. Fair enough. Fair enough. Um, so to, uh, chat about camp for a few minutes, when was the first camp you attended? What level did you attend at? Tell me about it. I went to the very original Ferret Palooza in Pennsylvania. Okay. So I'm not sure everybody listening to this will know what Ferret Palooza means. You're going to have to get a little bit of background. Okay. So this was, so we all know who Denise is, right? And she kind of earned this little nickname of she's a ferret. She never stops moving. Constant go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go. So she came up with this idea and I swear to God, she put it together in like two or three months. I don't know how the heavens name she did it. Um, but you know, she put it out there and lo and behold, I drove three days. By myself with my little redhead. My husband was supposed to join me, but he was doing this thing called, oh, I don't know, a federal deployment doing search and rescue and search and recovery after a huge flood down in Texas. So I drove by myself and I think I made it in two or three days. It's a heck of a drive. Uh, but it was the very original Fensie camp. We called it Ferret Palooza. Um, shade. Oh God, Nancy Little. Oh, my, oh, love Nancy. Um, she, she probably, oh, just love working with Nancy. Love working with all of them. But anyway, so I drove to Pennsylvania and I drove back by myself and on the way home, I swung through Ohio, picked up a dog that ended up being a dog that went on to do, um, conservation work in Africa for a rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory. Um, yeah, I have a scar from her. So I think everybody who handled Sarah has a Sarah scar because she would grab the toys and grab on. Uh, but anyway, so, um, that was Ferret Palooza and I think it was three days. It was in a, a relatively small facility in comparison to where we go now. Uh, I think it was called the canine gym or something like that. And it was hot and it was muggy and it was so fun. There was one bathroom, one bathroom. We have one bathroom. Uh, I think people were going out behind the trees and taking tingles. Um, anyway, it was, it was just to die for it. And I don't even think we had a host hotel or anything like that. I don't, I don't remember. That's 2015. The very first one. Yeah. Went there.

정말 멋지네요. 가봤고, 해봤죠. 지금까지 캠프에 몇 번이나 다시 다녀오셨나요? 어, 딸이랑 두 번 더 갔어요. 퓨리나 팜스에 갔었죠. 그게 2016년이었던 것 같아요. 그리고 2017년은 오리건에서 했던 것 같아요. 저는 그 행사에 비행기를 타고 가서 자원봉사를 했습니다. 그리고 저는 음, 셰이드 님의 자원봉사자 같은 역할을 했습니다. 셰이드 화이트셀 님이요. 정말, 이보다 더 좋을 순 없죠. 누구를 선택해야 할지 고민해야 한다면, 저는 못 할 것 같아요. 누군가를 따라다니며 배우는 '섀도잉(shadowing)'을 해야 한다면 누구를 선택할지 모르겠네요. 잘 모르겠어요. 저는, 저는, 그분들 모두에게서 배울 점이 정말 많을 거예요. 제 생각에 FDSA가 정말 멋진 점은 모든 분이 정말 친절하고, 지식이 풍부하며, 매우 겸손하다는 것입니다. 아, 정말 베풀 줄 아는 분들이죠. 어쨌든, 저는 셰이드 님과 함께 있었고 당시 셰이드 님이 원지(Onesie)를 데리고 왔던 걸로 기억해요. 그래서 가끔씩 원지를 돌볼 기회가 있었죠. 아무튼, 그렇게 했고 저는 호스트 호텔에 머물렀습니다. 저녁마다 열린 모임들도 있었는데, 세상에, 정말 최고였어요. 그러고 나서 오하이오에서 열린 행사에 한 번 더 갔던 것 같아요. 제 기억에 15, 16, 17, 18년도, 이렇게 네 번 정도 갔던 것 같네요. 19년도에는 안 갔던 것 같아요. 잘 기억이 안 나네요. 네 번 갔었습니다. 그러다 2020년이 되었죠. 네, 맞아요. 저는 네 번 참석했습니다. 2020년이 되었고, 코로나19가 터지면서 행사를 진행하지 못했죠. 21년도에도 안 했던 것 같아요. 잘 모르겠네요. 22년도에는 했나요? 기억이 안 나네요. 저도 지금은 잘 기억이 안 납니다. 아마 안 했을 거예요. 2023년도에 한 건 확실해요. 맞아요. 20년도에는 안 했던 것 같아요. 기억이 안 나요. 그리고 말씀드렸듯이 당시 제 스포츠 독은 은퇴한 상태였습니다. 그 아이는 이미 다리 하나를 잃은 상태였어요. 그러니 당연히 2020년 이후로는 그 아이와 더 이상 대회에 나가지 않았죠. 저는 말 그대로 2020년 12월에 랠리 내셔널 대회를 마치고 돌아왔어요. 돌아오고 한 달 뒤에 발 재건 수술을 크게 받았고요. 그때 그 아이의 팔꿈치에서 혹을 발견했죠. 그리고 3주 뒤에 그 아이는 다리 세 개가 되었어요. 그 후 15개월 뒤에 세상을 떠났고요. 음, 그러니까 당연히 저는 스포츠 독이 없었던 셈이죠. 저에게는 구프 하드(Goofed Hard)가 있었는데, 제가 프리스비를 함께 하는 보더 콜리 믹스견이에요. 정말 재미있는 친구죠. 음, 하지만 저는 나이도 많고 뚱뚱하고 무릎도 안 좋거든요. 그래서 그냥 그 아이와 재미로 놀아요. 누군가 정말 제대로 훈련시킨다면 아마 엄청난 디스크 독이 될 거라고 확신해요. 하지만 이 아이는 제 반려견이니까요. 정말 손이 많이 가는 친구예요. 사실 구프는 추진력과 담력이 좋아서 FEMA 구조견이 될 수도 있었을 거예요. 하지만 핸들링에 큰 문제가 좀 있어요. 그래서 그냥 제 곁에 있죠. 저는 그 아이와 놀아요. 즐거운 친구예요. 음, 그리고 올해는 강아지 없이도 캠프에 갈 수 있게 되어 정말 기대가 커요. 제 말은, 즐거운 시간을 보내기 위해 꼭 강아지가 있어야 하는 건 아니라는 거죠. 배우기 위해 꼭 강아지가 필요한 것도 아니고요. 그곳에는 배울 거리가 정말 많거든요.
That's awesome. Been there, done that. And how many times have you been back to camp now? Uh, two more with my daughter. I went to Purina Farms. I think that was 2016. And then I think 2017 was in Oregon, I think. And I flew to that one and I volunteered. And I was, um, kind of a volunteer for Shade. Shade Whitesell. Man, it doesn't get any better. If I had to choose who to pick from, I couldn't. If I were to ghost somebody or not ghost her, but follow somebody, shadow somebody. I don't know. I, I, I, you'd learn so much from all of them. That's what's so fabulous in my opinion about FDSA is that everybody is just so gracious, so knowledgeable, so humble. Ah, so giving. And, uh, anyway, so I, uh, was with Shade and I think Shade had onesie there. And so I got to take care of onesie every now and then. Um, anyway, so I did that and I stayed there in the host hotel. Um, you know, we had the, the get togethers in the evenings, the gatherings, the, oh my God, it was just, just the best. And then I went to one more, I think in Ohio. So I went to four, I think, uh, 15, 16, 17, 18. I don't think I met 19. I don't remember. I went to four. And then 2020 hit. And of course, yeah, I've been there four times. Uh, 2020 hit and yeah, that was COVID and we didn't do that. And I don't think we did 21. I don't know. Did you do 22? I don't remember. Um, I don't remember either right now. I don't think you did. I know we did 2023. Yeah. I don't think we did 20. I don't remember. And of course, my, like I say, my, my, my, my, my, my sport dog, uh, at that point was retired. She'd already lost one leg. So obviously I wasn't competing with her anymore after, uh, 2020. I literally came back from rally nationals, December of 2020. I had major foot reconstruction surgery the week after I got back a month later. I found a lump on her, um, elbow. And three weeks later she had three legs. And then 15 months later she was gone. Um, but, uh, so obviously I didn't have a sport dog. I had goofed hard, my border collie mix, uh, that I do Frisbee with. And he really is a lot of fun. Um, but I'm old and fat and have bad knees. And so, um, I just play around with him. I'm sure if somebody were to really, uh, work with him, he'd be a pretty killer disc dog. But he's mine. He's a handful. He actually could have been a FEMA dog, um, because of his drive and his nerve strength, but he has major handling issues. So he's mine. I play with him. He's fun. Um, and I'm really excited about being able to go to camp this year, even without a dog. I mean, you don't have to have a dog to have fun. You don't have to have a dog to learn. There is so much there.

제가 그곳을 정말 좋아하는 이유는 모두가, 뭐 모두가 친구라고 말하고 싶은 건 아니지만요, 모두가 서로를 응원하기 위해 그곳에 있다는 점이에요. 아, 세상에, 그 동료애와, 음, 서로에 대한 격려가 정말 대단하거든요. 사람들이 서로를 지켜봐 줘요. 정말 많은 분들이 다가와서 저와 제 작은 빨간 머리 강아지가 함께하는 모습을 보는 게 너무 좋았다고 말해주곤 했어요. 그리고, 사람들이 다가와서 했던 말이 기억나는데, 그분 강아지가, 그러니까 아주 특이한 견종이었던 것 같아요. 음, 바센지는 아니었고요. 세상에, 어, 시바 이누였어요. 그녀가 작은 시바와 함께하는 모습을 지켜봤던 기억이 나는데 정말 멋진 모습을 보여주고 있었죠. 그래서 제가 그녀를 찾아가서 말했죠. 시바와 함께하는 당신의 모습을 보는 게 정말 즐거웠다고 꼭 말해주고 싶었어요. 우리는 그때부터 친구가 되었죠. 그때부터 페이스북 친구로 지내고 있어요. 음, 그녀는 정말 멋진 친구고 분명 지금도 시바들과 함께 대회를 나가고 있을 거예요. 어쨌든, 계속 이야기할 수도 있어요. 눈치채셨나요? 왜 다시 오시는지 알겠네요. 캠프에서 가장 좋아하는 부분이 있나요? 캠프요. 캠프요. 그냥 전부 다인가요? 그냥 전부 다예요. 제 생각에 가장 좋은 점은 모든 사람이 서로를 응원하기 위해 그곳에 있다는 점인 것 같아요. 그게 제 경험이었거든요. 제가 처음 캠프에 왔을 때보다 확실히 규모가 커졌죠. 하지만 모두가 서로를 응원하러 온 거였어요. 문제가 생기면 그냥 물어보기만 하면 누군가 도와줬죠. 음, 당연히 수업들도 정말 훌륭해요. 일대일 지도를 받을 수 있고, 다른 참가자들을 지켜보면서 배울 수도 있어요. 음, 심지어 직접 하지 않는 종목을 지켜보면서도 해보고 싶다는 생각이 들지도 모르죠. 그곳엔 정말 많은 게 있어요. 음, 저는 심지어 올해 일정표나 계획표도 확인하지 않았어요. 네. 올해는 '맙소사, 시간을 어떻게 쪼개서 써야 할지 모르겠다'는 생각이 들어요. 언젠가는 확인해봐야겠지만, 어쨌든 전 갈 거예요. 그렇군요. 이미 가기로 마음먹으셨군요. 그러니까, 그게 중요한 거죠, 그렇죠? 그럼요. 저도 완전히, 정말로 갈 거예요. 그래서, 어, 저는 사실 강의도 할 예정이에요. 그래서, 와, 재미있겠네요. 재미있겠어요. 야호. 말이 나온 김에, 그 관점에서 어떤 것을 기대하고 있는지 조금 이야기해 보시겠어요? 어떤 주제에 대해 이야기할지 말이죠. 어, 저는 '반응성 통합(reactive integration)'에 관한 강의를 하나 할 예정이에요. 물론 10일 후에 반응성 통합에 관한 웨비나가 예정되어 있기도 하죠. 그리고 6월 1일부터는 반응성 통합 수업도 시작되고요. 그래서, 어, 거기서 강의를 하려는 거예요.
And what I love about it so much is that everybody is, I don't want to say everybody's your friend, but everybody is there to support you. Uh, gosh, just the camaraderie and the, um, the, the accolades. I mean, they, they watch you. I had so many people would come up and say, I just love watching you and your little redhead. And, uh, you know, people would come up and I remember she had a, I want to say she had a really unusual breed. Um, wasn't a Basenji. It was, uh, oh my God, Shiba Inu. And I remember watching her with her little Shiba and she was doing some amazing stuff. And I hunted her down and I said, I just wanted to tell you, you are such a joy to watch with your Shiba. We have been friends ever since. We've been Facebook friends ever since. Um, she's a cool gal and I'm sure she's still competing with her Shibas. But, uh, anyway, I could go on and on. Could you tell? It's clear why you're coming back. Do you have a favorite part of camp? Camp. Camp. Just all of it, huh? Just all of it. And it really, what I think the favorite part is the fact that everybody is there to be a support to each other. That's been my experience. And, you know, it's grown certainly since the first time, the first camps I've been to. But everybody was there to support each other. If you had a problem, all you had to do is ask and somebody would help. Um, you know, the, uh, obviously the classes are, are amazing. Uh, you get one-on-one attention and you learn from watching everybody else who's there. Um, even watching a sport that you don't do, you might learn to want to do it. And there's just so much there. Um, I don't even, I haven't even looked at the, uh, the roster or the, uh, the, the agenda for what we're doing this year. Yeah. I just, uh, for this year, I'm like, oh my God, I don't know how I'm going to divide my time. Cause I guess I'll have to look at that at some point in time, but I'll be there anyway. Fair enough. You already know you're going. So, I mean, that's the important part, right? Absolutely. I am totally, I am totally going. So, uh, and I'm going to actually be teaching. So, yay, that'll be fun. That'll be fun. Yay. Speaking of, do you want to talk a little bit about what you're looking forward to from that perspective? Maybe what you're talking about? Uh, I'm doing one lecture, which is my reactive integration. And, um, which of course I've got a webinar coming up in 10 days on reactive integration. And then I have a class that starts June one about reactive integration. And, um, and so I'm doing, um, the lecture there.

반응성에 관한 내용이라 실습 자리는 따로 없어요. 어, 그래서 그게 제가 할 일 중 하나인데 정말 기대돼요. 제 말은, 이게 제가 작업견들로부터 배운 모든 것들을, 보호소 개들, 반려견들, 스포츠견들로부터 배운 것들을 종합한 결과라는 거죠. 그래서 그것들을 하나의 프로그램으로 통합했는데, 이름 그대로인 셈이죠. 어, 하지만 핵심은 여러 가지 선택지가 있다는 것을 이해하거나 아는 거예요. 모든 개에게 똑같은 방식을 천편일률적으로 적용할 필요는 없어요. 모든 개는 다 다르니까요. 어떤 개들은, 네, 그냥 먹지 않을 거예요. 그러니 원하는 행동을 유도하거나 반응성을 해결할 다른 방법을 찾아야 하죠. 세상에는 정말 너무나 많은 다양한 선택지가 있어요. 그게 바로 반응성 통합이 다루는 내용이죠. 그리고 제가 가르치는 것을 정말 좋아하는 또 하나는, 행동 사례에, 어, 아니면 행동을 변화시키기 위해 여러 개의 마커 신호(marker cues)를 사용하는 거예요. 진심으로, 그게 스포츠 행동이든 아니면 배우려는 기술이든 상관없이 말이죠. 가르치려고 하는 것이든, 아니면 해결하려는 행동 문제 그 자체든 간에요. 음, 반려견에게 보상을 주는 방식만으로도 반려견을 극적으로 변화시킬 수 있습니다. 보상이 이루어지는 방식만으로도 말이죠. 그리고 지난달에 행동을 위한 다중 마커 시스템(multiple marker system)에 관한 웨비나를 진행했던 것 같아요. 저는 그 시스템을 정말 좋아해요. 제 모든 반려견 보호자 고객들에게 가장 큰 변화를 가져다주었다고 생각합니다. 그리고 제가 받는 가장 큰 질문 중 하나가, 반려견 보호자들에게 어떻게 다중 마커를 사용하게 하느냐는 거예요. 저는 음, 사실 별로 어렵지 않다고 말하죠. 그냥 이렇게 말하면 돼요. '자, 반려견의 흥분도를 낮추고 냄새를 맡게 해 봅시다'. 그러면 어떻게 냄새를 맡게 할까요? 어떻게 하면 냄새를 맡게 할 수 있을까요? 바닥에 간식을 뿌려두는 거죠. 자, 이번엔 반려견을 약간 신나게 해줘야 해요. 저는 뭐, 예르키즈-도슨 법칙(Yerkes-Dodson law) 같은 것들을 너무 깊게 다루지 않으려고 해요. 하지만 반려견을 약간 흥분시켜야 할 때도 있죠. 움직이게 만들기 위해서요. 움직임 자체가 개들에게는 때로 이완 효과를 주기도 하니까요. 그러니 간식을 던져주기 시작하는 겁니다. 그러니 꽤 간단하죠. 음, 그리고 개들에게는 확실히 더 쉬워요. 아주 명확하니까요. 마치 '오, 이 단어를 말하네. 그럼 난 이 행동을 해야지' 하는 식이죠. 제가 한 가지 말씀드리는 것은요. 물론 핸들러가 생각할 거리는 조금 더 늘어나죠. 하지만 그게 나쁘다고 생각하진 않아요. 오히려 아주 좋은 일이라고 생각합니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 행동 문제 사례를 찍어내듯 똑같은 방식으로 처리하고 싶지 않으니까요. 어쨌든, 저는 다중 마커를 가르치고 있어요. 제 세션이 1시간 30분 정도였던 것 같아요. 1시간 30분 맞습니다.
It's, there's no, no working spots or anything cause it's about reactivity. Uh, so that's one of the things I'm doing and I love it. I mean, and this is where I've kind of taken all the stuff that I've learned from the working dogs, from the shelter dogs, from the pet dogs, from the sport dogs. And I've integrated it, hence the name, into, um, kind of a program. Uh, but a lot of it is about understanding or knowing that there are multiple options. You don't have to cookie cutter what this dog, what you do with every dog. Every dog is different. There are some dogs that, yep, they're just, they're not going to eat. Uh, so you have to look at a way to get the behavior or not get the reactivity that you need. There's just, there's just so many different options out there. And that's kind of what reactive integration is about. And then my, my very favorite thing to teach is, um, using multiple marker cues for behavior cases, uh, or for behavior, for changing behavior. And really and truly that's, that's whether it's a sport behavior or skill that you're trying to, to teach, or if it's a behavior problem per se, that you're trying to work through. Um, just by using the way you reinforce your dog, you can change the dog dramatically just by the way reinforcement happens. And, uh, I did a webinar on that last month, I think on the multiple marker system for behavior. And, um, I love it. I just, uh, I think it has made a, the biggest difference for all of my pet dog clients. And I think one of the biggest questions I get is, well, how do you get pet dog clients to do multiple markers? And I'm like, um, it's really not that hard. You know, you just say, okay, we need to, we need to lower your dog's arousal and let's get them sniffing. How are we going to get them sniffing? We're going to put food on the ground. Well, we need to get your dog a little excited. I, you know, try to stay away from, you know, the yurks, dogs, and law and all that too much. But, uh, you know, we need to get your dog a little bit up maybe just to get them moving because movement sometimes is relaxing for dogs. So let's start tossing food. So it's pretty easy. Um, and it's certainly easier for the dog, um, because it's very clear. It's like, oh, you say this word. I do that one thing. Um, it does take a little bit more thought for the handler. Uh, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I think that's a really good thing. Um, because we don't want to cookie cutter our behavior cases. Um, you know, so anyway, so I'm teaching multiple markers. Um, I've got what an hour and a half, I think of session. That is hour and a half.

심지어, 심지어 저는 잘 모르겠네요. 어, 왜냐면 전 상관 안 하거든요. 할 수 있는 한 오랫동안, 그리고 최대한 많은 사람들에게 가르칠 겁니다. 아마 반나절은 거뜬히 할 수 있을 것 같아요. 네. 제가 가진 모든 시간을 다 써서요. 어쨌든 그게 제가 하려는 두 가지 일이에요. 많은 건 아니지만 재미있을 거예요. 그리고, 음, 그러면 다른 사람들과 어울리고 배우며 지켜볼 시간이 더 많아지죠. 네, 정말 재미있을 거예요. 저는 파트타임으로 가르치는 게 좋아요. 다른 세션에 앉아서 다른 일을 할 시간이 충분하거든요. 맞아요. 음, 혹시 처음 참석을 고민하거나, 아니면 참석을 망설이는 분들, 혹은 이미 등록은 했지만 올해 캠프에서 무엇을 할지 고민하며 조금 막막해하는 분들에게 한마디 조언을 해주신다면요? 음, 어떤 말이 좋을까요? 음, 한 번도 가본 적 없고 좀 망설여지는 분들에게는 청강을 추천합니다. 그리고 물론 지금 시점에서는 실습 자리는 이미 다 매진됐어요. 그러니 선택의 여지가 별로 없죠. 음, 그냥 가서 보세요. 가서 보고 배우세요. 음, 설령 개를 데려가겠다고 등록했더라도, 이런 말 하긴 좀 그렇지만, 꼭 개를 훈련시켜야만 하나요? 아직 준비가 안 됐을 수도 있잖아요. 그래도 참가를 독려하자면, 그냥 하세요. 그저 하라고 하는 것 말고는 딱히 떠오르는 말이 없지만, 후회하지 않을 거예요. 진짜로 후회하지 않을 거니까요. 왜냐하면 개를 데려가더라도 개가 감당할 수 없는 상황에 억지로 넣을 필요는 없으니까요. 음, 그건 그냥, 있잖아요, 음, 반려견의 대변인이 되어주라는 뜻이에요. 괜찮아, 내 개는 지금 이걸 할 수 없어, 라고 말해주는 거죠. 음, 그리고 나서, 다른 걸 하세요. 하이킹을 하러 가세요. 왜냐하면, 우리는 아주 멋진 곳에 있으니까요. 거기에는 할 일이 아주 많아요. 음, 그리고, 뭐, 아무것도 안 되더라도, 반려견과 즐거운 시간을 보내세요. 음, 만약 반려견이 호텔 방이나 캠핑카 같은 곳에서 혼자 편안하게 쉬지 못한다면, 음, 그럼 그 아이와 함께 무언가를 하세요. 음, 그러고 나서 돌아와서 다른 사람의 세션에 참여하거나 하면 되죠. 하지만, 음, 저 같은 사람조차도 도와줄 사람들이 충분히 많을 거예요, 있잖아요, 제 개를 혼자 둘 수 없을 때, 제가 세션에 가는 동안 제 개와 함께 있어줄 수 있나요? 라고 물어볼 수도 있죠. 그것도 선택지가 될 수 있죠. 물론, 반려견에게 그 자리에 있는 게 최선의 선택이 아닐 수도 있겠죠. 하지만 반려견이 스트레스를 받기 시작하면, 그곳에 여러분을 도와줄 수 있는 사람들이 있을 거라고 생각해요. 분명히 있을 거예요. 음, 여러분과 여러분의 반려견이 잘 해낼 수 있도록 돕고 싶어 하는 사람들이 정말 많아요. 그게 바로, 성공이죠. 네. 모두가 성공할 수 있는 환경을 만들어주고 싶으신 거죠.
I don't even, I don't even know. Uh, cause I don't care. I'll teach it for as long as I can and as many people as I can. And I can go for probably half a day. Yeah. All the time I got. So anyway, those are the two things I'm doing. It's not, not a lot, but it's going to be fun. And, um, and then that gives me more time to schmooze with everybody else and to learn and watch. And yeah, it's going to be lots of fun. I like teaching part time. It gives you plenty of time to go, uh, sit in other sessions and do other things. Yes. Um, so if you were to give kind of one word of advice to somebody who's maybe considering attending for the first time, or, you know, they're kind of on the fence or maybe they've signed up, but they're just a little stuck on figuring out what they want to do at camp this year. Um, what would it be? Um, for somebody who's never been before and they're a little iffy, I would say audit. And of course, at this point in time, the working spots are all sold out anyway. So you don't have much choice. Um, just go and watch. Go watch and learn. Um, and even if you've signed up to take a dog and I hate to say this, but does it mean that you have to work your dog? Maybe you're not ready for that. Um, but to encourage them to go, just do it. I know that sounds, I don't know, other than just telling them to do it, you won't regret it because you just won't regret it. Because if you take your dog, you don't have to put your dog into a situation they can't handle. Uh, that just means, you know, uh, be an advocate for your dog and say, okay, my dog can't do this right now. Um, and then, you know, do something else. Go take it for a hike. Because I mean, we're in a, we're up in the, it's a pretty area. There's plenty of stuff to do up there. Um, and, um, so if nothing else, go enjoy your dog. Um, if they can't be in the hotel room or in your camper or whatever, and just chilling out on their own, um, then do something with them. Um, and then come back and go to somebody else's session or whatever. But, uh, I just, there's going to be enough people there to support even somebody like me, you know, while my dog can't be left alone, can you sit with my dog while I go to the session? You know, that's an option too. Now, granted, that might not be the best option for your dog to be there. But I would imagine if your dog starts to stress out, there are going to be people there that can help you out. Um, there's just a lot of people that want to make it work for you and your dog. That's, you know, success. Yeah. You want to set everybody up for success.

I know our volunteers try really hard to, uh, make sure everybody's got all the support they could possibly need. So. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I think, I think I had just as much fun, if not more as a volunteer. Cause that's really when I first met you. Do you remember up in Oregon? You're behind the curtain back there and I'm going, who is this young girl? Not a young girl, I'll take it. Oh my God. And I'm like, who is this little girl? No, I'm going, and I'm going, God, she's so smart when it comes to all this computer stuff. And I'm just a dog trainer. Um, but, uh, yeah, it was just, I mean, it was volunteering was just amazing stuff. I'm a lot of fun. I don't, don't, don't get me wrong. I mean, I, I, it was, and it was hot in Oregon. Oh my God. It was what was a hundred and it got over a hundred every day we were there. And I was actually setting up agility stuff. I don't do agility for God's sakes. I don't want to do agility stuff, but I did anyway, because that's what I was there for. Uh, but yeah, it was, it was just, there's just not another experience like it. I don't think. I mean, I do, I do dog scouts, right? Boy scouts, girl scouts, dog scouts. And we have a camp and our troop is the biggest troop in the United States. And we have a pretty nice camp, but it is nothing in comparison to this, obviously. Uh, and the quality of participants at an FDSA camp, talk about impressive people and impressive dogs. Um, not just because of impressive instructors, but everybody is just top notch. Um, and even if they're just beginning, they're learning from the ground up how to be the best that they can be. Not everybody's perfect. I mean, my golden hatter issues, obviously. Um, but, uh, we sure did. We sure had fun and we loved working with everybody we worked with and everybody was so encouraging. It was just a lot of fun. Not just fun. It was educational. It was hard work. Don't get me wrong. And I've spent many a weekend and up in Ohio and the, the walk from the hotel room over to the center. Uh, but, uh, anyway, it's not that bad. It's work. That's okay. It's not bad. It's wonderful. And the cool thing is if it's, if it's raining, I don't even have to go outside. It's nice. It's all covered. It's wonderful. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm excited that, you know, um, the time of year is kind of nice for this stuff too. Yes. Um, yeah. Yeah. I want to say the first one we went to in Pennsylvania, I want to say that was in June. Until the last couple of years, they've all been, they've all been in May or June. Yeah. That's what I thought. And I remember at, uh, Purina Farms when we were there, we had our travel trailer and

we were flipping burgers and, um, and it was hot. Uh, but Pennsylvania was just hot and humid. Oh, good God. October will be nice. Oh, it will be so nice. Yes. Yeah. Cause I'm not that far from, from, uh, Ohio now. I'm only, I'm only eight hours away versus 16 that I used to be in Texas now that I'm in Tennessee. It's only eight hours. So easy, easy peasy drive. Thank you. Last but certainly not least, welcome Ashley Horan to the podcast. Hi, Ashley. Welcome to the podcast. Hi, Melissa. Thanks for having me. I'm super excited to chat a little bit today. So do you want to, um, maybe start us off by sharing a little bit about your training background, the sports you complete in and maybe how you ended up at FDSA? Yeah, you bet. Um, so I came here, I came to FDSA sort of by accident and this was almost 10 years ago. I was not yet involved in any dog sports, but I work with dogs professionally and I was looking for some different handling and training techniques, um, that were within the sort of positive reinforcement realm. And, uh, I took a couple of obedience classes with FDSA and never pursued that. And then sort of accidentally did nose work. Um, and now almost 10 years later, I am, uh, uh, uh, I love competing in nose work. I am an apprentice judge now. Very cool. And it is super cool. And it feels like it was a lifetime ago from, from before and to now. Yeah. That's really awesome though. I mean, I love hearing that, that people have come on such like a journey, you know what I mean? Um, you said 10 years ago and before I hit record, we were talking a little bit about, uh, about that time. So do you want to talk a little bit about the first camp you attended and how you ended up joining us for camp? Um, oh my goodness. So I come from Canada. Uh, and so it was a bit of a ordeal to get to the first camp. I booked my tickets to the wrong airport. Um, and I, I had to drive from Toronto because that was just a better option than rebooking my ticket. Um, and I drove down, not really knowing anyone and it was such a welcoming environment and it was so friendly and everyone was just as weird as I was. And so I felt like I fit right in. Um, and it was a very small venue. It was really, there was a lot of crossover with the, the microphone. Um, but everyone just made do. And I remember there was little teeny tiny whiteboards that the instructors were having helpers right on.

지금과 비교하면 정말 소규모였고 일종의 귀여운 수준이었는데, 지금은 규모가 정말 대단하죠. 네. 네. 이제 캠프에 몇 번이나 참가하신 거예요? 전부 다요. 횟수가 몇 번이든 상관없이 빠짐없이 다 참가했어요. 제대로 세어보진 않았지만, 저는 '페릿팔루자(Ferretpalooza)' 때부터 갔어요. 그게 제 첫 경험이었죠. 저는 청강생으로 참가했고, 그다음 해부터 매년 자원봉사자로 활동해 왔어요. 정말 대단하네요. 음, 뭐가 가장 기억에 남으시나요? 무엇이 계속 이곳으로 돌아오게 만드나요? 음, 저는 전문적으로 개와 함께 일하고 개를 사랑하는 사람들과 일해요. 가끔은 그게 에너지를 좀 소진시키기도 하거든요. 그래서 저는 캠프에 와서 재충전하고, 개에 대해 전문가처럼 깊이 이야기할 수 있는 사람들로 둘러싸여 다시 개에 대한 열정을 느끼곤 합니다. 매년 정말 기대하고 있어요. 왜냐하면 이곳을 떠날 때면 항상 훨씬 더 밝은 관점을 다시 얻게 되고, 제 전문적인 업무들을 다시 시작할 준비가 되기 때문이죠. 그런 맥락에서, 매년 캠프를 마치고 집으로 돌아갈 때 무엇을 얻어가시는 것 같나요? 혹은 캠프가 당신의 훈련이나 대회 참여, 혹은 그 외 활동에 어떤 영향을 끼친다고 생각하시나요? 저는 항상 새로운 것을 얻어 가요. 마법 같은 조각일 수도 있고, 때로는 아주 큰 것일 수도 있고, 또 어떤 때는 겉보기엔 사소해 보이는 것일 수도 있죠. 저는 아직 대회에 참가하거나 본격적으로 연습하지 않는 다른 스포츠들에 대해서도 애정을 키우고 있어요. 연습하고 있지 않은 스포츠들이요. 그래서 언젠가는 캠프의 다양한 강사님들을 보면서 다른 분야로도 진출하게 될 거라고 확신해요. 캠프에서 다양한 강사님들을 보는 것만으로도요. 캠프의 큰 장점은 직접 가서 다양한 종목을 조금씩 체험해 볼 수 있다는 점이죠. 무슨 뜻인지 아시죠? 무슨 말씀인지 아실 거예요. 모든 것을 다 시도해 볼 수 있잖아요. 그렇죠. 맞아요. 그뿐만 아니라 한 장소에서 이 모든 다양한 스포츠를 살짝 엿볼 수 있다는 게 정말 멋진 점이죠. 정말 대단한 일이라고 생각해요. 다른 곳에서는 이렇게 할 수 있을지 잘 모르겠네요. 세계적인 선수들과 함께하고, 세계적인 수준의 동료들에게 둘러싸여 있으니까요. 어떤 사람들은 자기 종목에서 최고인 분들이죠. 또 어떤 사람들은 저처럼 완전 초보자들도 있고요. 그래서 이런 다양한 수준과 태도를 가진 사람들이 모인 멋진 단면을 볼 수 있게 되죠. 캠프는 정말 멋진 곳이에요. 저는 매년 이곳을 정말 기대하고 있습니다. 가장 좋아하는 부분이 있으신가요? 수년 동안 정말 좋은 친구들을 많이 사귀었고 그들을 만나는 것이 항상 기다려져요. 그들의 이름을 크게 부르고 나서, 따뜻하게 안아주거나 하이파이브를 하거나, 우리가 편안하게 느끼는 방식대로 인사하는 걸 기다리게 돼요.
Like it was very, very small scale and really sort of adorable, um, compared to where it is now, which is amazing. Yeah. Yeah. How many times have you been to camp now? All of them. I have been all of the times, however many that is. I, I've sort of lost count, but I went to the Ferretpalooza. That was my first experience. I attended as an auditor and then the following and every year since I've been a volunteer. That's fantastic. Um, what, what stands out to you? What, what leads you to keep coming back? Um, well, I work with dogs professionally and I work with the people that love them. And sometimes that can kind of drain, drain the tank a little bit, you know, and so I come to camp to refill my cups, um, and feel excited about dogs again, surrounded by geeky dog people who can talk geeky dog stuff. I look forward to it every single year because I know that I will leave with, uh, much brighter perspective again and, you know, ready to go, go tackle, go tackle my, my professional commitments again. So, um, kind of on that note, what do you feel like you kind of take away or what kind of impact has camp had on your training, your competing, whatever, after you kind of head home each year? I always come away with something new. Um, and it's some magic piece or a new, sometimes it's something big, sometimes it's something that's seemingly small. I'm developing a love for other sports that I'm, I'm not yet, uh, competing in or really practicing in. So I'm sure that at some point I'll branch out to some other things just from seeing, um, the different instructors at camp. That's definitely a strength of camp being able to like show up and do a little bit of sampler. You know what I mean? You'll try all the things. It is. It is. And you're not, you're getting, uh, you can kind of get like a sneak peek into all of these different sports all in one venue, which is super cool. I don't, I don't know if that's something that you can do elsewhere. Uh, and it's with these world-class competitors and you're surrounded by world-class peers. Um, some of these people are the best in their sport. Some of them are, are absolute beginners like I was. And so you get this really neat cross section of all of these different levels and, um, attitudes. And it's, it's a, it's a pretty neat place to be camp. My, I look forward to it every single year. Do you have a favorite part? I've made some really great friends over the years and I always look forward to seeing them. I look forward to, you know, screaming out their name and I give them a big hug or a high five or whatever's comfortable for us.

음, 그리고 그곳은 제가 소속감을 느끼는 곳이에요. 우리 모두 조금씩 이상하고 서로를 이해하며, 아무도 자신이 왜 그렇게 행동하는지 설명할 필요가 없는 그런 곳이죠. 부끄러워할 필요도 없고 모두가 서로를 정말 응원해주거든요. 제가 그곳에서 가장 좋아하는 점 중 하나는 그 환경이 정말 긍정적이고 지지적이라는 점이라고 생각해요. 첫해에는 청강생으로 참가하셨고 그 이후 매년 자원봉사를 하셨다고 들었습니다. 잠시 자원봉사를 하는 건 어떤지 말씀해주실 수 있나요? 자원봉사를 하는 게 어떠냐고요? 음, 저는 뭐든 직접 해야 직성이 풀리는 사람이에요. 마치 훈련이 덜 된 꼬마 강아지처럼 가만히 있질 못하죠. 만약 제가 할 일이나 임무를 받지 못하면, 스스로 찾아서라도 할 거예요. 그게 제 방식이에요. 너무 오래 가만히 있으면 몸이 근질근질하거든요. 그래서 저는 할 일이 있는 게 정말 좋아요. 거기에 있는 동안 무언가 맡은 임무가 있는 게 좋거든요. 음, 그리고 사람들을 돕는 것도 좋아해요. 가끔 사람들이 조금 길을 잃은 기분을 느낄 때, 그들이 잘 적응하도록 돕고 그들 역시 이곳에 소속되어 있다고 느끼게 해주는 것을 정말 좋아해요. 그냥 직접 움직이는 게 좋아요. 돌아다니고, 물건을 옮기고, 들고, 나르고, RV 차량에 도그 워크(dog walk) 장비를 억지로 맞춰 넣으려고 애쓰는 것 같은 일들이요. 작년에 그게 하이라이트였죠. 정말 독특한 경험이었어요. 정말, 정말 독특했죠. 네. 해시태그: 펜지 캠프에서 내가 한 일들. 음, 네, 저는 사람들과 교류하고 그들이 소속감을 느낄 수 있도록 돕는 걸 정말 좋아해요. 그게 제가 가장 좋아하는 일 중 하나인 것 같아요. 그럼 처음 참가를 고려하고 있거나, 아니면 이미 등록했는데 조금 걱정되는 분들을 위해 한마디 조언을 해주신다면요? 오, 저는 꼭 참여하시라고 말씀드리고 싶어요. 아무 걱정하지 마세요. 아무도 모르는 상태로 와서 아주 많은 새로운 친구를 사귀고 돌아가게 될 거예요. 그러니 그냥 등록하고 오세요. 자원봉사를 원하신다면 누군가를 찾아가서 '안녕하세요, 처음 왔어요'라고 말해보는 것도 좋은 방법이에요. 저를 찾아오세요, 저를요. 아마 저는 튜튜 스커트를 입고 있거나 눈에 띄는 장식이나 의상을 입고 있을 거예요. 저를 찾아서 '안녕하세요, 처음이에요'라고 말해주세요. 그러면 제가 '환영해요'라고 말해줄게요. 여기가 어디고 무엇이 있는지 알려드릴게요. 꼭 알아야 할 것들도요. 무엇을 해야 할지도 다 알려드릴 테니 그냥 와서 친구를 사귀면 금방 새로운 친구들이 생길 거예요. 정말 좋네요. 애슐리, 팟캐스트에서 당신의 생각을 공유해 주셔서 정말 감사합니다. 초대해 주셔서 감사합니다. 재미있었어요. 저에게는 즐거운 추억 여행이 되었네요. 정말 멋지네요. 청취해 주셔서 정말 감사합니다. 다음 주에는 애슐리 에스코바와 함께 컨포메이션에 대해 이야기해 보겠습니다.
Um, and it's a, it's a, I feel like I belong there. I feel like we're all a little bit weird and we all understand each other and no one has to explain, you know, why they are the way they are. They don't have to feel embarrassed and everyone's so supportive. But I think that's one of the things I love most is just how positive and supportive of an environment it is. So I know you mentioned that your first year you audited and kind of every year since then you volunteered. Do you mind talking for just a moment what it's like to be a volunteer? What it's like to be a volunteer? Um, I am a doer and I'm a mover. I'm a wiggly, badly trained little puppy. And if I'm not, if I'm not given a task or a job to do, I will find one on my own. That's just, I like to, if I stay still too long, I build up a static. Um, and so I really love having a thing. I love having the task while I'm there. Um, and I like helping people. I like, um, sometimes people feel a little lost and I love being able to help them settle in and help them feel like they belong too. I just, I love the, the doing, you know, walking around, moving things around, lifting, carrying, toting, uh, trying to fit a dog walk into an RV. That was the highlight of last year. That was definitely a unique experience. Very, very unique. Yeah. Hashtag things I did at Fensi camp. Um, yeah, I love, I love connecting with the people and just helping them feel like they belong too. I think that's one of my favorite things. So if you had a word of advice for, um, somebody either considering attending for the first time, or maybe they've signed up and they're feeling a little apprehensive, um, what would you say? Oh, I would say, oh, please do it. It, it, don't, don't worry. Um, you'll show up not knowing anyone and you'll leave having a whole bunch of new friends. So just register, show up. If you want to volunteer, that's a great option to find someone and just say, hey, I'm new. Find me, find me. I'll probably be wearing a tutu or some other like obvious doodad or costume. Find me and say, hey, I'm new. And I will say, welcome here. Here's where the things are. Um, here's what you need to know.
