컴페티션 힐링은 개가 핸들러의 움직임에 의존하지 않고 독립적으로 자신의 위치를 유지하며 주행하는 훈련이다. 8개월 된 어린 개가 주위의 방해 요소나 환경적 변화에도 불구하고 정확한 정렬을 유지하며 보행하는 상태를 목표로 한다. 핸들러는 출발 전 반드시 개가 올바른 자세로 옆에 정렬되었는지 확인하며, 그렇지 않을 경우 이동을 시작하지 않는다. 주행 중 개는 핸들러의 다리나 손의 움직임을 방해하지 않아야 하며, 핸들러의 신체에 기대거나 의지하지 않는 독립적인 자세를 지향한다. 핸들러는 개가 앞으로 치고 나가는 현상을 스스로 제어하도록 유도하며, 보행 중 자유로운 움직임을 보장한다. 리드줄은 필수적인 도구로 활용되지만, 줄의 긴장감에 의존하기보다는 개가 스스로 보행 위치를 파악하게 한다. 극한의 기후나 산만한 환경에서도 개는 핸들러의 언어적 신호에 휘둘리지 않고 자신의 훈련된 과제를 수행한다.
