반려견 훈련을 도와줄 사람을 찾을 때 주의해야 할 위험 신호가 많이 있습니다. 이런 훈련사들은 종종 반려견 훈련과 관련된 자격증이 전혀 없습니다. 그들은 '나는 평생 개를 훈련해 왔고 이런 방식으로 훈련해서 결과를 얻었다'라고 말하곤 하죠. 음, 저도 평생 뇌를 가지고 살았지만, 그렇다고 해서 제가 공인된 뇌 수술 전문의가 되는 건 아니잖아요. 그들의 가장 큰 결점 중 하나는 자신의 자아를 투영해 개가 무슨 생각을 하는지 멋대로 단정 짓는 것입니다. '아, 저 개가 당신을 골탕 먹이려는 거예요' 같은 식으로요. 저는 여러분에게 개가 무슨 생각을 하는지 추측해서 투영하라고 말하지 않을 겁니다. 우리 중 누구도 그걸 알 수 없으니까요. 대신 여러분이 할 수 있는 건 개의 보디랭귀지를 관찰하는 겁니다. 개는 정말 놀랍고도 영리한 존재이며 사람과 함께하고 싶어 합니다. 그래서 그들은 여러분의 규칙이 개에게나 저처럼 밖에서 지켜보는 사람에게 아무리 불공평하거나 말도 안 되게 보일지라도 그 규칙에 맞춰 살아가는 법을 배우게 될 것입니다.
There are a lot of red flags when you're looking for somebody to help you with your dog. Often these trainers have no credentials in dog training. They will say, I have trained dogs my whole life and I've got results training dogs this way. Well, I've had a brain my whole life, but that doesn't make me an accredited brain surgeon. One of their biggest flaws is projecting through their ego what they believe the dog is thinking. Oh, the dog's trying to get you. I'm not going to tell you to project what you think your dog is thinking because none of us know, but what you can do is you can watch body language. Dogs are just brilliant, brilliant creatures and they want to be with people. And so, they will learn to live with your rules no matter how unfair or ridiculous they may appear to the dog or to the person like me looking from the outside in.
