안녕하세요, 미리 경고 하나 해둘게요. 평소의 제 밝고 낙관적이며 쾌활한 스타일의 영상을 기대하고 오셨다면 오늘 영상은 전혀 그렇지 않을 겁니다. 하지만 저와 함께 슬픔을 나누고 싶으신 분들이라면, 먼저 휴지를 준비해 주시고, 끝까지 지켜봐 주세요. 어쩌면 마지막에 달콤씁쓸한 희망을 전해드릴 수 있을지도 모르니까요. 그럼, 그럼 나중에 다시 뵙죠. 이 아이는 제 반려견 매버릭입니다. 가끔 제 영상에 등장하는 걸 보셨을 수도 있고, 제가 싱가포르에서의 꿈같은 삶을 정리하게 된 가장 큰 이유 중 하나라는 걸 기억하시는 분들도 계실 겁니다. 그래요, 이 모습 그리울 거예요. 매버릭은 블랙 래브라도 리트리버와 버니즈 마운틴 도그의 믹스견입니다. 똑똑하고 튼튼하며 장난기도 엄청 많고 또 말도 정말 많이 합니다. 정말 쉴 새 없이 떠들죠. 엄밀히 말하면 유기견 출신이지만, 전 '유기견'이라는 단어를 별로 좋아하지 않아요. "쟤 유기견이야? 응, 내가 구했어." 정말 불타는 건물에서 구해내기라도 했나요? 원래 제 친구 알렉스의 반려견이었어요. 강아지 때 데려와서 몇 년간 잘 키웠는데, 첫 아이가 태어난 후 1년 내내 응급실을 드나들게 되면서 이 털 뭉치를 돌보는 일이 버거워졌죠. 제가 자원해서 우리가 데려오게 됐습니다. 그때는 [음악] 이미 키우던 반려견이 있었거든요. 우리 큰 딸, 태미요. 155파운드의 순종 버니즈 마운틴 사랑 저는 이 개와 특별한 유대감을 느꼈는데 오늘날까지도 제가 다시는 다른 반려동물이나 사람과 그런 관계를 맺을 수 없을 거라 생각해요 하지만 그 아이는 다루기 힘들었어요. 제가 문 밖으로 나가기만 하면 범죄자로 변했죠. 빈틈을 노리고 조리대나 탁자 위에 둔 거라면 무엇이든 훔쳤어요 심지어 쥬라기 공원처럼 문도 열 수 있었죠 그 아이는 매버릭이 가족이 된 지 며칠 후에 말기 암 진단을 받았고 그 후로 두 달 동안 매우 힘든 시간을 보냈어요 그리고 어 결국 안락사를 시켜야 했죠 음악 음악 저는 태미의 영상을 많이 가지고 있지 않아요 갓 태어난 딸을 촬영하느라 너무 바빴기 때문이죠 제 마음속에 이 둘은 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 존재예요 음악 음악 그날 집에 돌아왔을 때 매버릭이 있었어요 이 엉뚱하고 표정이 풍부한 개는 제가 강아지 때부터 알던 아이였는데 이제는 집안의 왕이 되어 있었죠 그 아이는 그곳에서 빈자리를 채워주고 있었어요. 그 아이가 공백을 메우고 앞장서서 우리를 웃게 해 주었으며 제가 상실감을 치유하도록 도왔죠. 그리고 저는 스스로에게 약속했어요 아이들을 믿고 맡기겠다고 그 아이가 밤에 도망치지 않을 거라고 믿겠다고요 목줄도 없고 밧줄도 없고 우리도 없이 그저 자유롭게 돌아다니는 개로 키우겠다고요 그렇게 했고 잘 해냈죠. 그 아이는 결코 떠나지 않았어요 떠나지 않았어요 음, 닭들을 정말이지 깜짝 놀라게 겁주는 것만 빼면 말이죠 다들 그러듯이요 그리고 나서 인생의 기회가 찾아왔습니다 [음악] 가족 전체를 데리고 뿌리를 뽑아 싱가포르로 이사하게 되었죠 목표는 항상 매버릭을 싱가포르로 데려오는 것이었지만
hello a fair bit of warning right up front if you are looking for my typical light-hearted optimistic bubbly kind of video today this video is not it at all but if you are one of those who choose to suffer right along with me first get your box of tissues out and second stick all the way to the end because i might have some piece of bittersweet silver lining to offer cool cool i'll see you on the other side this is my boy maverick y'all might have seen him pop in my videos from time to time some might even remember that he is one of the key reasons why i'm no longer living the dream life in singapore yeah i bet you miss this maverick is a crossbreed between a black labrador and a bernice mountain dog he's smart he's strong he's got a wicked sense of humor and he talks like all the goddamn time technically he's a rescue dog although i don't really like that term she's a rescue yeah i rescued her really did you pull her out of a burning building he used to be my buddy alex's dog he got it as a pup he raised him for a number of years but once he got his first kid he was in and out of the er for a year taking care of that ball of fluff became too much i volunteered and we took him in [Music] i already had a family dog at the time my big girl tammy 155 pounds of pure breed bernice mountain love i had a special bond with this dog that to this day i don't think i will ever have with any other pet or human but she was a handful like as soon as i would walk out the door she would become a criminal she would look for angles she would steal anything you left on a countertop or a table she could even open doors jurassic park style she got diagnosed with terminal cancer a couple days after maverick joined the family and she had a very rough two months after that and uh i had to put her down [Music] i don't have a lot of videos of tammy because i was too busy filming my newborn daughter in my mind these two are inseparable [Music] when i came home that day there was maverick this quirky expressive dog that i knew since he was a pup was now the king of the house he was there he was filling the void he picked up the slack he stepped up he made us laugh he helped me process the loss and i ended up making a promise to myself i would trust him with my kids i would trust him not to run off into the night no leash no ropes no cages just free roaming dog and it worked out he never went away well except maybe to scare the living hell out of some chickens as one does and then came the opportunity of a lifetime [Music] i'm uprooting the entire family and we're moving to singapore the goal was always to bring maverick over with us in singapore but

예방 접종 절차가 다소 지연되어서 저희가 먼저 떠나야 했고 녀석은 캐서린과 조이스의 사촌과 함께 머물렀습니다 세상에, 내 강아지를 다시는 못 보는 건 아니길 바랐죠 당초 계획은 녀석이 그곳에서 3~4주간 절차를 완료할 때까지 머무는 것이었고 그 후에 캐서린이 녀석을 데리고 비행기를 타서 싱가포르에 있는 우리를 방문해 우리 아이와 재회하는 것이었죠 하지만 이제 바이러스가 잠복기 동안 전염성이 있다는 경고가 나오고 도로를 폐쇄하고 수십만 명의 사람들이 도시를 떠났습니다. 그런 일이 일어났고 80명이 넘는 사람들이 사망했습니다 팬데믹이 그 계획을 완전히 무산시켜 버렸습니다 싱가포르는 완전히 봉쇄되었고 캐서린은 어떤 상황에서도 우리에게 비행기를 타고 올 수 없게 되었습니다 그래서 우리는 매버릭을 싱가포르로 혼자 보내는 방법을 찾아보려 했고 사실상 화물로 보내는 것이었죠 하지만 그것은 좋은 계획이 아니었습니다. 유일한 방법은 일주일이 걸리는 여러 번 경유하는 노선뿐이었으니까요 유럽에서 그리고 아시아, 터키에서 아니 아니 아니 그래서 결국 그는 카트린과 함께 머물렀어요 우리가 싱가포르에 있던 일 년 내내 몬트리올에 있는 그녀의 아주 작은 아파트에서 함께 지냈는데, 그것이 그녀에게 일어날 수 있었던 최고의 일이 되었어요. 이 힘든 팬데믹 시기에 말이죠 그녀는 세상에서 가장 놀라운 개를 일 년 동안 룸메이트로 두게 된 거죠 [음악] 말할 것도 없이 그녀는 우리처럼 사랑에 빠졌죠 그리고 우리가 돌아왔을 때 있잖아요 우리는 거의 미안한 마음까지 들었어요 그녀에게서 그를 다시 데려오는 게요 카트린, 굳이 말 안 해도 알겠지만 정말 고마워요, 정말 고마워요, 고마워요 일 년 동안 우리 아이를 그렇게 사랑으로 돌봐줘서요. 물론 즐거운 시간이었겠지만 그래도 정말 고마워요 고마워요 [음악] 그리고 우리는 기본적으로 멈췄던 곳에서 다시 시작했어요. 그는 우리를 보고 기뻐했고 우리도 그를 보고 기뻤죠 우리는 그를 보고 기뻤고 그도 우리를 보고 기뻐했죠 새로운 집에서요 예전 그대로의 매버릭이었어요. 항상 기분이 좋고 항상 말이 많죠 [음악] 이 따뜻하고 포근한 존재가 주변에 없을 때 집이 얼마나 허전했는지 우리 모두 깨닫지 못했던 그런 상황 중 하나였죠 그 빈자리를 말이에요 그는 아이들에게도 아주 훌륭한 놀이 친구예요 원하는 만큼 부드럽게 혹은 격렬하게 놀아주죠 빈 플라스틱 병들을 재활용하며 놀 때도 항상 조심해서 절대 손을 물거나 터그 놀이를 할 때도 실수하지 않죠 가장 좋아하는 밧줄로 줄다리기를 하며 다람쥐의 삶을 최대한 비참하게 만드는 데 꽤 능숙하죠 또한 바닥에서 내려와, 얘들아 [음악] 이건 내 거야, 형제여 [음악] 그 녀석은 최고의 산책 파트너예요. 차에 뛰어올라 우리가 떠나는 어떤 무모한 자동차 여행에도 함께하는 것을 무엇보다 좋아하죠 거친 북부 해안까지 가는 12시간 동안 단 한 번도 불평하거나 낑낑거리지 않았어요 그 녀석은 우리 인간들이 앉는 곳이면 어디든 앉는 걸 좋아해요 특히 그 자리에 이미 사람이 앉아 있으면 더 그렇죠 그리고 멋진 경치를 즐기기도 해요 정말이라니까요 맹세해요, 정말 즐기는 게 맞아요 그러다 다시 겨울이 오면 그 녀석은 행복해하고
the vaccination protocol kind of dragged on a little bit and we had to leave early so he stayed with catherine joyce's cousin man i hope it's not the last time i see my boy and the initial plan was he would stay there for three to four weeks just to complete the protocol then she would fly him in with her to visit us in singapore and we would rejoin with our boy but now warning that the virus is contagious during its incubation period to close the roads hundreds of thousands of people left ube it happened through snakes more than 80 people have died the pandemic threw that plan completely out the window singapore completely shut down and catherine was not able to fly to us in any circumstances then we tried to figure out a way to solo maverick into singapore as cargo essentially but that that was not a good plan the only way we could do it was gonna take a week and he was gonna do multiple stops in europe and then asia and turkey and no no no so in the end he stayed with katrin for the entire year we were in singapore living with her in her tiny ass apartment in montreal and that turned out to be the best thing that could ever happen to her during this trying pandemic time she had the world's most amazing dog as a flatmate for a year [Music] needless to say she fell in love just like we did and when we came back you know we almost felt guilty to snatch him back from her catherine i know i don't have to say it but thank you thank you thank you for taking care of our boy in such a loving way for an entire year i know all the pleasure was yours but still thank you [Music] and we basically picked off right where we left off he was happy to see us we were happy to see him you digs new house same old maverick always in a good mood always talkative [Music] it's one of those things where none of us realized how empty the house was without this warm cuddly presence around it he's also a very good playful partners for the kids going as soft or as intense as you want them to recycling a bunch of empty plastic bottles always careful never to bite your hands or playing tug of war with his favorite length of rope and he's pretty good at making a squirrel's life as miserable as possible too stay off the floor fellas [Music] this is mine bro [Music] he's a great walking partner he loves nothing more than hop in the car and join us on any crazy road trip we might take not complaining or whining a single time on the 12 hours it took us to get to the rugged north coast he likes to sit wherever us humans like to sit especially if a human is already sitting there and he enjoys a good view i swear he does then winter rolls along again he's happy

저는 짜증이 나죠. 매번 똑같아요. 밖에는 나갈 수 없고, 절대 안 돼요 좋아요, 한번 확인해 봅시다. 오 안 돼 말할 필요도 없이, 겨울의 즐거움은 저와 매버릭이 공통으로 느끼는 건 아니에요 이 녀석은 눈보라 치는 날을 무엇보다 좋아하는데 그게 올해 들어 2554번째 [음악] 눈폭풍일 거예요 말 그대로 11월부터 3월까지 이 녀석은 생애 최고의 시간을 보내죠 자, 눈을 치워보자 친구 남은 눈을 다 없애버려 이 근처에는 더 이상 눈이 없네 [음악] 그래, 잘했어 내년에 보자, 쓰레기 같은 눈아 하지만 이제 녀석도 나이가 좀 들었고 어, 3주 전부터 눈이 조금씩 나빠지기 시작했다는 걸 눈치챘어요 조금 마치 왼쪽 눈으로는 전혀 볼 수 없는 것 같았어요 왼쪽 눈은 아예 보이지 않았고 오른쪽 눈도 상태가 안 좋아서 친구야, 너 왜 이렇게 빨리 늙어버린 거니 수의사 선생님은 망막 박리일 가능성이 있다고 하셨는데 그 나이에는 저희가 해줄 수 있는 게 거의 없다고 하더라고요 그게 전부였어요 게다가 체중도 놀라운 속도로 빠지기 시작했어요 매버릭처럼 털이 많은 개들은 털 때문에 말라 보여도 티가 잘 안 나요 전혀 말라 보이지 않죠 등을 쓰다듬어 보면 뼈가 다 느껴졌어요 머리 쪽의 턱 근육도 다 빠져버렸고 그리고 저희는 알았죠 태미 때와 마찬가지로 이제 마지막이라는 걸요 매버릭이 우리와 함께한 마지막 여정이었어요 우리가 함께한 마지막이었죠 [음악] 이 개와 너무 오랫동안 함께 살아서 이제는 한 번만 봐도 알 수 있어요 목이 마른지, 배가 고픈지, 아니면 오늘 상태가 좋은지 안 좋은지 다 보여요 요즘 계속 힘든 날이 이어지고 있어요 계속 살이 빠지고 음식도 잘 소화하지 못하네요 이리 와, 친구야 이제는 눈이 아예 보이지 않는 지경까지 와버렸어요 그래서 벽에 부딪히고 의자에 부딪히고 사람들과 부딪혀요 그래서 저는 계속 손가락을 튕기면서 녀석에게 어디로 가야 할지, 어디로 돌지 알려주고 있어요 앞을 보지 못하는 개를 안내한다는 건 조금은 어려운 일이에요 아이러니하다고 생각해요 앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 알아요 앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 알아요 내가 무엇을 해야 할지 알아요 내가 어떤 역할을 해야 할지 알아요 그리고 어떤 기분이 들지도 알죠 이미 몇 번 겪어봤으니까요 이런 상황을 몇 번인가요 [음악] 오늘은 좋은 하루였어요, 그쵸 우린 오후 내내 밖에서 보냈는데 그는 햇볕 아래서, 그리고 그늘에서 런징을 했죠 바람 냄새를 맡으며 그냥, 그냥 편안하게 행복하게요 알렉스가 오늘 마지막 작별 인사를 하러 왔어요 매버릭도 즐거워한 것 같아요 그는 바로 그의 무릎 위에서 잠들었죠 마치 예전처럼요 장담하건대 어떤 다람쥐도 감히 바닥에 내려올 엄두도 못 냈을 거예요 이 친구는 그 생각뿐이었으니까요 캐서린은 몬트리올에서 여기까지 내려와서 매버릭과 몇 시간을 함께 보냈어요
i'm pissed off same old same old there's no outside no way all right let's check it out oh no needless to say the joy of winter is not something i have in common with maverick the guy loves nothing more than a good blizzard and that's going to be the 2554th [Music] snowstorm we got this year literally from november to march this guy is having the best time of his life let's patch the snow buddy get it out of your system no more snow around here [Music] yeah you're good see you next year garbage but now he's getting on in years and uh three weeks ago we noticed that his eyes were beginning to go a little bit it's like he couldn't see out of his left eye at all and had trouble with his right one so you're getting so old so fast buddy the vet suspected that it might just be the retina that is detaching itself and uh at his age there's very little we can do but he also started to lose weight at an alarming rate and that's the thing with fluffy dogs like maverick it's they don't look skinny because they have so much hair you run your hand across his pine and there's the bones on his head all the jaw muscles are gone and uh we knew just like tammy that was it maverick was on his last few miles with us [Music] i've been living with this dog for so long that one look at him and i can tell if he's thirsty if he's hungry if he's having a bad day good day he's having a string of bad days now he keeps losing weight he has trouble keeping his food down come on buddy we're at this point where his eyes have completely gone and he bumps into the walls the chairs people i'm just snapping my fingers all the time so that he knows where to go where to turn me guiding a dog that cannot see is a little bit ironic i would say i know what's coming i know what's coming i know what i have to do i know what kind of part i need to play and i know how it's going to feel because i've been here a couple times before [Music] today was a good day you know we spent all afternoon outside he was lunging in the sun and in the shade you know he was smelling into the wind just just relaxed happy alex came in for final goodbyes today and i think maverick enjoyed it he immediately fell asleep on his lap just like old times i'll tell you right now no squirrel would have dared touch the floor and this guy was in his mind catherine came all the way down from montreal to spend a couple hours with
