강아지가 실제 강아지라기보다는 피라냐처럼 느껴져서 여러분의 손과 발목, 그리고 아이들이 끊임없이 물리고 있나요? 운이 좋으시네요. 오늘 저희가 강아지의 입질을 멈추게 하는 방법에 대해 심층적으로 다룰 예정이니까요. 안녕하세요, 저는 수잔 개럿입니다. 30년 이상의 반려견 훈련 경험을 바탕으로, 여러분이 꿈꾸던 반려견과 함께하는 것이 얼마나 쉬운 일인지 보여드리기 위해 영상을 만들고 있습니다. 그럼 이제 영상 속으로 들어가서 강아지의 입질을 멈추게 할 수 있는 5가지 방법을 알아보겠습니다. 첫 번째, 강아지가 간식을 어떻게 받아먹나요? 제가 이 영상에 링크해 드릴 수 있는 영상이 있는데, 그 영상에서 강아지가 덥석 물지 않도록 적절하게 간식을 주는 방법을 알려드릴게요. 첫 번째와 관련된 내용으로 음식 유도(food lure) 사용에 관한 것입니다. 음식으로 강아지를 유도하면, 쫓아가서 잡으려는 행동을 부추기게 되어 더 자주 물릴 수 있습니다. 두 번째, 손이 다가올 때 강아지가 적절하게 반응하도록 가르쳐야 합니다. 콜라 그랩 게임(collar grab game)을 도입해 보세요. 강아지의 목줄을 잡고 간식을 준 뒤 둘 다 놓아주는 것입니다. 이 과정을 반복해서 연습하면 얼굴 근처로 손이 다가올 때 강아지가 '나 자신을 보호하기 위해 손을 물어야겠다'고 생각하지 않게 됩니다. 세 번째, 저의 게임인 'It's Your Choice(네 선택이야)'는 강아지가 스스로를 조절하도록 돕는 데 정말 놀라운 효과가 있습니다. 눈앞에 간식이 있어도 달려들어서 물고 잡으려 하지 않게 되는 거죠. 간식이 입으로 직접 전달될 때까지 기다리게 됩니다. 네 번째는 제가 가장 좋아하는 방법인데, 강아지가 어떻게 적절하게 무는 법을 배우는지에 대한 것입니다. 즉, 사람은 물지 않고 장난감을 물게 하는 것이죠. 바로 장난감을 가지고 '게임 시작, 게임 종료(game on, game off)'를 가르치는 것입니다. 우선, 사용 중인 장난감의 길이가 적절한지 확인해보세요. 저는 제 팟캐스트 '도와주세요. 강아지 입질을 어떻게 멈추게 할까요?'에서 바로 이 내용을 다룬 적이 있습니다. 그건 꼭 들어두시는 게 좋을 거예요. 장난감은 길이가 적당해야 합니다. 그래야 강아지가 의도치 않게 당신의 손을 물지 않게 되거든요. 강아지가 당신의 손과 충분히 거리를 두고 놀고 싶어 하도록요. 올바른 행동을 쉽게 만드는 거죠. 하지만 일단 강아지가 이 놀이를 좋아하게 되면, 저는 '게임 시작, 게임 중단' 놀이를 합니다. 게임 시작일 때는 제가 말을 걸고, 장난감을 움직이고, 강아지와 상호작용을 하죠. 몸을 쓰다듬어 주거나 얼굴을 토닥여주기도 하면서 제 손을 물려고 하는지 확인합니다. 강아지와 온갖 방식으로 상호작용을 하는 거예요. 만약 강아지가 장난감을 놓고 제 손을 물면, 저는 딱 멈춥니다. 강아지가 제 몸에서 떨어져 다시 장난감을 물면, 다시 말을 걸고 칭찬하며
Do you have a puppy that seems to be a little bit more of a piranha than an actual puppy that your hands and ankles and children are constantly getting bit? Well, you're in luck because today we do a deep dive on how to stop your puppy from biting. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett and I'm applying my more than 30 years of dog training experience to make videos so you can see how easy it is to have the dog of your dreams. So let's jump into the video and find those five ways that you can use to stop your puppy from biting. Number one, it's how does your puppy take treats? Now, I've got a video that I could link in this video that's going to show you the appropriate way to deliver treats so you're not encouraging the puppy to snap. Now, related to number one is the use of food lures. If you're luring your puppy with food, you're encouraging the chase and try and grab, which may get you bit more often. Number two, we need to teach our puppies an appropriate way to respond when hands come towards them. Enter the collar grab game. You grab your puppy's collar and you deliver them a cookie and you let go of both. You rehearse that over and over so that hands towards the face aren't met with, I need to protect myself and bite those hands. Number three, my game, It's Your Choice is amazing for helping a puppy self-regulate. You see cookies in front of you and you're not going to try and grab and bite and grab and bite. You're going to wait till those cookies are delivered directly to your mouth. Number four, and this is my favorite way that my puppies learn how to bite appropriately, and that means bite toys, not people. And that is by teaching game on, game off with a toy. So first of all, is your toy an appropriate length. I talked about this exact thing in my podcast, help. How can I stop puppy biting? You'll be wanting to listen to that one for sure. You want a toy that is an appropriate length so that the puppy isn't inadvertently grabbing at your hands. They can get far enough away from their hands that they will want to play. Making correct easy. But once you've got a puppy that loves to play this game, I play the game of game on, game off. Game on, I'm talking, I'm moving the toy, I'm interacting with the puppy, physically patting them, maybe patting their face, seeing if they want to come and redirect my hand. You're doing all of these things, interacting with the puppy. If the puppy comes off the toy and grabs my hand, I freeze. They come off my body and go back on the toy. I start talking to them and praising

아주 긍정적으로 상호작용을 시작하죠. 게임 시작, 게임 중단. 강아지의 입은 장난감에만 있어야 합니다. 장난감에서 입을 떼면 게임은 중단됩니다. 다시 게임 시작. 이걸 발전시켜서 강아지가 물러나거나 앉을 때까지 장난감을 붙잡고 있다가 강아지가 장난감을 덮치게 합니다. 처음에는 손을 장난감에서 아주 멀리 떼어 놓지만, 점점 단계를 높여갑니다. 마지막 단계에서는 제가 강아지와 장난감을 가지고 놀 때, 쉬운 선택이나 올바른 선택을 하도록 유도하지 않습니다. 올바른 행동을 더 어렵게 만드는 거죠. 그래서 강아지가 장난감의 어느 부분을 물고 싶어 하는지 관찰합니다. 그리고 그 부분을 숨겨서 강아지가 이제 어디를 무는지 확인하죠. 만약 제 손을 무려고 하면 게임은 계속 중단된 상태입니다. 만약 다른 곳을 제대로 물면, 아주 착한 강아지죠. 이건 양손으로 장난감을 길게 잡고 있다가 점점 더 가까이 옮겨가면서 할 수 있습니다. 그래서 이빨이 제 손을 살짝만 스쳐도 게임은 중단됩니다. 입이 제 손에서 멀어지면 게임 시작. 그 작은 강아지 이빨이 제 살 근처에 오기라도 하면 게임 중단입니다. 알고 있습니다, 강아지에게 물리면 정말 속상하죠. 여러분의 목표는 강아지가 여러분을 물고 싶어 할 상황을 최대한 만들지 않는 환경을 조성하는 것입니다. 강아지가 사람을 물지 않도록 가르치는 데 도움이 될 훌륭한 전략들을 많이 알려드렸는데요. 강아지들은 아직 배우는 중이라는 사실을 꼭 기억해 주세요. 그러니 제발, 제발 강아지를 절대 때리거나, 찰싹 때리거나, 흔들지 마세요. 너무 많이 물려서 속상하다는 이유로 강아지에게 소리 지르지 마시고, 강아지를 탓하지 마세요. 강아지는 아직 잘 모르는 어린 존재입니다. 과거에 어떤 전략을 써봤든 효과가 없었더라도, 제가 약속하건대 효과가 있을 방법은 올바른 선택을 하도록 만드는 것입니다. 그것이 가장 분명한 선택이죠. 그러니 여러분이 해야 할 일은 강아지가 나쁜 행동을 반복할 기회를 줄이는 것입니다. 친구들이 주둥이를 잡고 노는 것을 허락하지 마세요. 무는 행동을 부추기는 그 어떤 놀이도 하지 마세요. 대신 강아지가 좋은 선택을 연습하는 횟수를 늘려주세요. 그리고 무엇보다도 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지, 하루 중 몇 시에 강아지가 무는지, 몸 어디를 무는지 기록해야 합니다. 강아지가 무는 빈도를 줄이기 위해서는 기록해야 할 모든 것들이 있습니다. 제가 사용하는 기록 시트가 있는데, 쇼 노트에 기꺼이 공유해 드리겠습니다. 링크를 클릭하세요. 자, 그럼 강아지와 조화로운 관계를 만들어 우리와 함께 일하는 것을 좋아하는 자신감 넘치는 강아지로 키워봅시다.
them and interacting with them in a really positive way. Game on, game off. Puppy's mouth belongs on a toy. If it comes off a toy, game stops. Game on, game on. We grow that and start building in, I'm going to hold the toy until you back away or even sit. And then I'm going to have the puppy dive on the toy. At first, I get my hand far, far away from that toy, but I progress this game up. And the final stage that I'm playing with the toy and the puppy is I'm not making the easy choice, the correct choice. I'm making the correct choice more difficult. So I'm observing, where does my puppy love to grab that toy? And I start hiding that bit to see what are you going to grab at now? And if they come grabbing at my hand, game stays off. If they grab somewhere else, what good puppies. And you can do this by holding a toy with your hands separated a long distance and going closer and closer and closer so that if, even if a tooth just grazes my hand, game off. Game on when your mouth stays away from my hands. Game off when those little puppy teeth come anywhere near my flesh. I know it can be frustrating when you're getting bit with a puppy. Your goal is to create an environment where you're making it very difficult for the puppy to ever want to bite you. I've given you a lot of great strategies here on how to help your puppy learn to not bite people. I want to keep in mind that they are puppies and they are learning. So please, please, please do not ever hit that puppy or smack them or shake them. Don't ever yell at them because you're frustrated because you're getting bit a lot and don't blame that puppy. They are puppies. They don't know better. And no matter what strategies you apply that haven't worked in the past, I promise you the one that will work is by making the correct choice, the obvious choice. And so what you're going to do is decrease the opportunity for the puppy to rehearse bad behavior. Don't let your friends muzzle grab. Don't do any of those games that encourage biting. Well, you increase the number of rehearsals the puppies make of good choices. And most of all, you've got to record keep what's going on, what time of day that puppy bites, where on your body they'll be biting. There's all things that you need to record keep in order to decrease that incidence of puppy biting.
