강아지 훈련을 좀 해보죠. 이 아이는 다이스예요. 정말 정말 아주 착한 강아지죠. 정말 착한 강아지예요. 첫 며칠 동안은 대부분의 시간을 그냥 놀아줄 거예요. 맞아요. 저는 이 아이가 저를 좋아했으면 좋겠어요. 그냥 원하는 대로 오가게 둘 거예요. 여기는 정말 슬픈 프리토스가 뒤에 있는데 자기가 훈련 중인 걸 알거든요. 하지만 여기가 제가 평소에 이 아이를 두는 방이라서 제가 좀 안 좋은 상황에 있네요. 그래도 이따가 이 아이랑 같이 훈련할 거예요. 생각해 보니 오, 와우, 안 넘어지기가 힘드네요. 잘했어, 얘야. 그렇게 했어요. 달려가서 장난감을 물고 돌아왔는데 물건은 안 가져왔네요. 그게 리트리브의 3분의 2죠. 그러니 얻은 것에 대해 축하해주세요. 맞아요, 사람들은 너무 예민하게 구니까요. 그래요, 넌 장난감을 안 물어왔어, 라고요. 그게 어때서요? 가서 돌아왔잖아요. 때가 되면 장난감을 물어오게 하면 돼요. 사실 당신을 지나쳐 가더라도 괜찮아요. 강아지가 돌아왔을 때 장난감을 덜 뺏을수록 강아지가 다시 가져올 확률이 더 높아져요. 자, 가서 가져와. 그래요. 만약 가져온다면 봤나요? 제 손에 잠시 1~2초 정도 있었죠. 장난감을 손에서 놓아주세요. 그래야 다시 가질 수 있으니까요. 이제 이 아이가 저 장난감을 좋아하니까요. 자, 저 카펫 위에 있네요. 뭘 원하니? 괜찮니? 오, 정말 자신감이 넘치는 강아지예요. 제가 본 몇몇 행동들이 그걸 말해주죠. 이 아이는 제 무릎 위에 앉아서 밖을 보는데, 그게 아주 사소한 것처럼 들리겠지만요. 개들은 보통 사람 몸에 등을 대고 앉아서 밖을 보며 무언가를 씹지 않거든요. 정말 편안함을 느끼지 않는 이상은요. 꽤 좋았어요, 그러니까 이제 여기 온 지 12시간이 지났으니 우린 이제 좋은 친구가 됐죠 그런데 음, 공항에서조차 그러더라고요 그랬군요, 정말요? 거기서 바로 교감하기가 아주 쉬웠어요, 아주 기뻐했죠, 안 그런가요? 녀석이 작은 이동장에서 나왔을 때 5초 정도 생각하는 듯하더니 그다음엔 '어, 여기가 집인가 보네' 하는 듯했고 아주 잘 지냈어요 차를 쫓아가는 행동이 있는데 그건 제 최우선 순위로 해결해야 할 일이에요, 왜냐하면 그건 꽤 큰 문제니까요 매우 심각한 안전 문제이고 이 경우에는 두드러지게 나타나서 제가 하고 있는 방식은 간식을 한 줌 쥐고 길가로 내려가서 녀석이 하기 전에 먹이려고 하는 거예요 그러니까 차를 보면 '저거 봐' 하는 식인데 다만 제가 마킹을 하는 건 아니고 그냥 간식을 주고 고개를 돌리게 하려고 해요 음, 어느 정도 비율로는 효과가 있는데 어떤 차들은 소리가 너무 커서 간식도 눈에 들어오지 않는지 녀석이 살짝 이성을 잃을 때가 있어요 그럴 때는 녀석을 들어 올려서 돌려세우죠 왜냐하면 저는 녀석이 어떤 방식이나 형태로든 차를 쫓는 습관을 들이는 것을 절대적으로 원치 않거든요 절대 일어나선 안 될 일이죠, 그러니까 핵심은 그게 절대 일어나지 않게 하는 거예요 녀석이 그 행동을 하면서 즐거움을 느끼지 못하게 하는 거죠, 그렇게 하면 그 문제로 고생할 가능성이 거의 없어질 거예요 아 여기 또 하나 있네요, 장난감들이요
let's do some puppy training so this is dice he's a very very very nice puppy very nice puppy most of my time the first days is just going to be playing right I just want him to love me I'll let him come and go as he wishes this is very sad Fritos behind and he knows that we're training but this is the room I usually keep him in so I'm kind of in a bad spot but I'll work with him afterwards thinking about it oh wow it's hard not to fall I'll go boy so he did he ran out he got it and he came back without it that's two thirds of her retrieves so celebrate what you get right cuz people get all worked up yeah then you didn't pick up the toy so what boy he went he came back don't pick up the toy when the time's right actually going past you but that's okay there is really the less you take the toy when they come back the more likely we are to bring it back huh you'll go get yeah and if you do take it did you see how it was in my hands for just a matter of a second or two give the toy out of your hand so he can have it back now since he likes that one the carpet what do you want we do you mind oh boy he's a super super confident puppy like some of the stuff you see that tells me that he sits on my lap facing out that sounds such a little thing the dogs don't put their back to your body like that and face out and chew and stuff unless they're feeling pretty good so I mean he's been here now for 12 hours so now we're good friends but um even at the airport he was doing that he was oh really very very easy right off of that to engage he was happy huh he came out of his little his little crate he had five seconds of thinking about it and then he's like huh I guess this is home and he was very good we do have car chasing and that will be my number one priority is to deal with that because that's kind of a big deal that's a huge safety issue and it's in this case it's pronounced so what I'm doing is taking handfuls of food and went down to the road and I try to feed him before like when he sees the car it's kind of like a look at that kind of thing except I'm not really marking and I'm just trying to feed him turn him away mmm that works for a reasonable percentage but then there are some that are too loud and he if the food doesn't register for him and he loses it a little bit those I pick them up and turn them away because I absolutely positively do not want him to develop a habit in any way shape or form of chasing cars it just can't happen so the trick is that it will never happen you'll never have a good time doing that and that makes it pretty much less likely that we're gonna have a problem with that Oh

그렇군요 어딜 봐도 대부분의 시간은 강아지와 놀아주면서 화장실을 막 나오는 길이에요, 그 아이가 직접 한 건 아니지만 터그 놀이를 길게 할 필요는 없어요. 사실 그건 쉬운 부분이죠. 다시 가져오게 만드는 것이 어려운 부분이에요. 더 격렬하게 놀수록 더 소유욕이 강해지고, 더 소유욕이 강해지면 아마도 돌려주려 하지 않을 거예요 그럼 음, 그 아이는 많이 깨물어요 원래 그래야 하니까요, 그 아이는 워킹 브리드(작업견 혈통)니까요. 하지만 이미 제 손은 피투성이가 됐고 저는 사실 꽤 잘 대처하는 편이라 대부분 무시하고 정말 열심히 다른 곳으로 관심을 돌리려고 노력해요 그래서 장난감을 꺼내서 이렇게 말하죠 내 손이나 팔, 내 몸 대신 이걸 가지고 노는 게 어때? 잠옷 바지는 입을 수가 없어요 보들보들한 옷은 못 입어요, 그 아이가 한번 물면 끝장이거든요 떼어내기도 쉽지 않고요. 그래서 가능한 한 항상 몸에 장난감을 지니고 있어야 해요. 이건 제 실수인데, 습관적으로 장난감을 가지고 다니지 않거든요. 하지만 항상 주머니나 바지에 뭔가를 넣고 다녀야 해요 안 그러면 뒤에서 다가와서 제 다리나 뭐든 잡아버리거든요. 그러면 아이고, 진짜 엄청 아파요 그러니 아주 작은 강아지도 꽤나 사람을 괴롭힐 수 있죠, 그쵸? 그래 맞아, 정말 너는 정말 귀엽구나 오, 정말 귀여워요. 자, 간식 훈련을 조금 해볼까요, 하지만 그들은 배식받기를 원하지 않아요 셰이핑은 아직 우리가 할 단계가 아니라고 생각해요 아직 충분한 관계가 형성되지 않았고 강아지가 그만큼 집중력을 발휘할 준비가 안 됐다고 생각하거든요 못 할 건 없지만 굳이 그렇게까지 힘들게 훈련하고 싶지는 않아요 이 나이대에는 먹는 걸 가장 좋아할 테니까 그냥 루어링을 하는 게 낫지 않을까요? 그게 훨씬 간단하니까요 며칠이나 일주일 정도 지나고 나면 강아지가 집중해서 생각해야 하는 훈련을 시작할 수 있겠죠 테이블 위의 간식만 쳐다보는 게 아니라 엄마를 쳐다보는 것 같은 무언가를 해야 간식을 얻을 수 있다는 식으로요 하지만 지금은 그게 오히려 좌절감을 줄 수도 있다고 생각해요 지금 강아지의 나이를 생각하면요 아직 너무 어리니까요 특히 이 시기에는 저와 관련된 훈련에서 좌절감을 느끼게 하고 싶지 않아요 그러니 계속 성공만 하게 해서 계속 이기는 경험을 하게 해주는 게 좋겠죠 훈련할 시간은 앞으로 아주 많으니까 지금 당장 서두를 필요는 없어요 주머니에 간식을 넣어뒀으니 포켓 핸즈 훈련부터 시작해 볼게요 이건 우리가 수없이 이야기했던 건데 처음 시작하기에 아주 완벽한 훈련이죠 간식을 손가락 사이에 거꾸로 쥐고 있으면 강아지가 직접 찾아야 하거든요 그걸 찾으려다 보면 자연스럽게 똑바로 서서 올바른 자세를 잡게 돼요
another one over here there's toys everywhere I look most the time play with the puppy and just leave the toilet I mean he didn't do it but you don't have to play long games of the tug cuz really time is the easy part it's bringing it back that's the hard part and the harder you play the more possessive they become the more possessive they come they'll most likely the era to return get that um he fights she bites a lot that's cuz he's supposed to he's a working bred dog but I'm already kind of bloody through my hands and I'm actually pretty good so mostly I ignore it and I just really really work to redirect right so I get out of toy and I'm like how about this instead of my hand my arm my body you can't wear like pajama pants you can't wear fluffy things because he just gets them and then it's over so and getting them off is not easy so what you want is as much as possible have a toy on your body this is an error of mine I'm not in the habit of carrying twice but I have to always have something in my pocket or my pants otherwise it comes up behind me and he grabs my leg or whatever and then you know ouch and it actually really hurts so even a little puppy can do a pretty good number on you huh yes you can yes you are you did to to something up your d cutest on them oh you are cute ok let's do a little food training will start but they don't want to serve a shaping I just don't think we're quite there yet I don't think we have enough relationship I don't think he is enough mental brainpower yet to do that I mean it's not that he couldn't I just don't really want to have to work that hard because at this age what he's gonna want to do is eat the food right so why not just do luring which makes it really really simple oh no no no you know in a few days or a week or whatever I can start doing stuff where he has to concentrate and say rather than just staring at the food on the table I have to do a thing like look at mom or something and then I'm gonna get the food but I just I think that could potentially lead to frustration right now just because of his age who he is right he's just the baby so I would rather that he'd not have any frustration around me especially at this age so why not just learn so he's just winning and winning and winning and winning there's lots of time to get to all kinds of training but I don't need to do that now so I actually do have food in my pocket we're gonna start with pocket hands we've talked about this a billion times it's a perfect thing to start with because the cookie is in these fingers upside down and he has to find it in order to find it he will end

pushes to get the cookies the more likely he is to drop the leverage thing and see it's in here over the top of his nose pushing back and plop down he goes you're gonna have a toy again because they I don't know nice that food that's okay so that's something you want to think about don't train hungry puppies because if you do you can't get them back on the toy right because now they're hungry and so when you say well let's play they're like no I want to eat and the problem isn't so much for the puppy is for the human because know what the human does is said oh it was so fun to train you as food numerous have offered it but I think I'll just go back to it and now very soon you have a dog who won't work for toys so don't do that um now we're working for toys let's say he said I don't want to work for this way that wouldn't bother me at all and by the way I just spoke I don't even work with the child ah your mouth um I meant play cuz work and play I'll come the same at the toy but if he had turned me down that would have been fine I'm not upset or anything I'm just not gonna go back to more more toy more food huh who's the best Oh faster I'm going to sit on the floor so you can more easily sit on my lap if you want to do you what to sit on my neck do you want to sit on my lap pumpkin huh you got a fine toy you have a fine little one look at you you're fine toy don't you with your fine toy oh he's a clever yeah he's a clever guy yes yes I love how he stays near me he has such a nice disposition such a nice puppy even though he's not sure he wants to share he's not leaving me so you could take the toy run off if he did at this stage for a few days I would just let him I didn't know whatever I would stay in here with other toys and tried it and spiked him into coming back because I have other cool toys to play with but it's it's so if after a week or two that wasn't working that just going quiet when he left and waiting for him to come back from the making a big bust when he returns then what I would do is I'll put him on a leash or train in a much much smaller space so this to my dogs means free meter twice okay and you teach that here push them away bring him back push him away bring him back here is hell did you see how I'm pushing in he's coming back to me that was really nice you did a nice job look at you now I'm gonna turn him so you can see so except he flopped anything he does but comes up into my hand [Music] you're dangerous there now what push him away he comes back that's what you want to learn right push he comes back push he comes back that's hard Matthew not there yeah isn't he lovely

his breeder is Donna kun dirt and she's wild rose Belgians I'm I really wanted this combination so we had talked months ago and I said and they'd really like it if you rent this female to that male and she said well via sheer coincidence that's exactly the combination I was planning so the stars align right and I got I got my custom my made-to-order puppy right I got exactly what I asked for and when I described what I wanted and I say she does pretty good job pretty much exactly what I wanted and she's gonna have issues because they all do so for example the car chasing you know but every puppy there's always things and that's your job is to take what you have and grow the pieces that are really great and work on the things you're not as happy about and see them right away see the trick here is seeing the problems at eight weeks so you can start gently just working through the things that matter don't obsess over the problems but be very aware and be very aware of how important different problems are because um some problems you really want to nip in the bud car chasing is an excellent example because it's so self reinforcing to the dog it would be like letting your dog climb up on your table and eat a roast you just don't don't let that one start up other things ya know you get to when you get to him I really believe in bringing out the best in the puppy so I don't try to make shy dogs sociable I think that's just I don't know at the very least disrespectful I just try to make them comfortable in their own skin but he doesn't have anything like that it's just really very very balanced very very nice he was beautifully raised she had a web web-cam so he could watch him and just every day there was things hanging in his pen and all kinds of stimulation in my opinion if a dog is genetically very good you don't even have to do all that you'll still have a good dog but if you do that you'll really help the ones that are a little bit soft a little weak and it'll really help you see the puppies you'll know them better because you'll have more opportunities to notice oh that one got upset when the balloon moved or whatever and I like to see it because I know that means the breeders spending a lot of time with the dogs so that kind of enrichment probably helps you maximize what genetics are and I'm a big big big believer in genetics I really put my money on that side in general so if you start with good genetics and then you have a breeder who's really working to develop the puppies you know doing things with them spending time with them and adding little stressors and changing their environment so their lives are
