I, I think, I think it's a better replacement than Leave It because with It's Your Choice, we're giving the dog the power to make good decisions and we don't grow the challenge until they've proven that they are, um, up to that challenge. So, it's your choice. I mean, like all parts of dog training need to be visited on a regular basis. I mean, with people and with dogs, behaviors are either eroding or getting stronger based on the environmental reinforcement. So, you know, you, you want to make that a way of life with your dog. So, uh, back to the demand barking. If your family is rewarding her and think it's funny, um, yeah, that'll be a big challenge to try and fix. As long as they don't get mad at her when it's not like they're trying to watch their favorite TV show and she demand barks. As long as you're consistent. If you, if you want to change a demand barker, absolutely. You need to stop reinforcing that and give them something else to do. And anytime you see them chewing on a bone, anything they have in their mouth means they can't bark, reward that. Um, okay. So, I'll tell you a story about, um, swagger who would bark to tell you he needs to go outside, which I love. He's always been a great communicator. When we were away for 10 days, he was able to get, um, one of the girls who works here, women, girls, one of the women who works here to go into the fitness area and do fitness with him. Um, shaped by dog. I don't know the exact pattern of reinforcement that happened because I wasn't here. I do know when I came home, let's go. We're going this way. He definitely would start barking when he thought it was fitness o'clock. And so for me, barking has always meant, do you want to go outside? So I said, um, to Kim, who's here at night with me, I said, just let him outside whenever he barks. And she said, but I think he wants fitness. I said, yeah, I know, but we're going to shape him to ask more appropriately that he wants fitness. So going and lying in the fitness area, that's an appropriate way to ask for fitness. Um, so it's recognizing where the reinforcement is and how can you create new patterns of reinforcement? Um, our puppy CKC Spaniel, congratulations, Brandy, um, arrives the first week of January after resting and getting acquainted. What should we concentrate on? What level of consistency should we see before moving? Ooh, good question. Um, Brandy, I would for sure try to get in our program recallers with your puppy. I think that will be the most amazing, um, start. And in a year from now, you're going to say, oh my gosh, what an amazing dog.

This is the smartest dog I've ever owned. So contact my team, wag at dogs at dot com. Um, I love to see new puppies, new puppies, start on the right path. So what do I do? I'm always working with the end in mind. So if my puppy comes home, my goal is I want you to sleep through the night. There is a podcast, Shaped by Dog podcast on how to get your new puppy to sleep through the night. Actually, just go to the playlist, puppy playlist. So I want that puppy to sleep through the night. So what will I do? I'm going to get them engaged for the game of dog. It's our first relationship. I, um, I'll tell you what I'm not going to do. I'm not going to invite 55 people over to my house to meet the puppy. I'm going to, um, if you have any problem at the house, I'm not going to let that other dog wash onto the puppy. I'm going to meet probably if my other dog is good with puppies, that puppy will be on my lap and, um, the other dog can meet that way. And then when the puppies are confident, they don't put them down and they can meet that way. Um, so I'm going to, of course, if you go to the puppy list and you, and you read about the, um, gated community, I'll have a gated community all set up. Um, I'll have my meal plans for that puppy. The last meal will be four hours before I go to bed. And, and then I'll have a crate, a small crate on the nightstand right beside my face. And that's where that puppy will sleep. Um, likely all the way through the night within the first three days. I love reading that crystal. I love, I love getting positive feedback about dogs that have had an amazing start. So Randy, that, I want that to be you in seven months. I want you to jump on a live that I'm doing while I'm walking my dogs and say, do you remember me with my CKC spaniel? And you told me to get into recallers and I did. And then seven months later, this, this dog's puppy's amazing. Um, okay. So, I mean, shaped by dog is the name of the podcast and those playlists everywhere. Um, if you go over to YouTube, actually the first playlist is a great one to look at because it's just a sampling of some of our recaller students and the experience that they shared. Some of them are training a service dog. Some of them are training a rescue bull. Some of them are training, uh, a small breed. Um, so we just put a sampling in a playlist for people to, if, if they're curious, number one, about what's possible training your dog this way. Number two, about what's possible for any dog, no matter what breed or size or what kind of start they've ever gotten. Obviously.

My goal as a coach of people with dogs is to help people give those dogs, either a rescue dog or puppy, the best start possible. So you don't have to deal with behavioral problems. That's my goal. Unfortunately, what a lot of people do is they try to save money and I get it. I mean, it's an investment. They try to save money. So they're going to cut out investing in a program like we have. And they try to go it alone and they end up with challenges and then they come to us. Absolutely. We can help you so much easier when you're on the same page right from the start. Um, what the don't wake the mama protocol sleeping through the night, uh, has worked like magic for us. I think one of the greatest, um, testimonials to the don't wait the mama program was one of our long time recallers and very, very special recaller student who came to us after she'd been training dogs her whole life. She had Dalmatians and had varying levels of success with the training. And at the time she came to us, she had a deaf Dalmatian puppy, two older Dalmatians, and she was going a little cray cray. Okay. So the fun story is that she bought recallers without telling her husband because she kept jumping from dog training to dog training. And she thought, I'm going to see if he notices a difference that this program really works. And, um, he did. I think she said about four weeks in, he said, what's, what are you been doing with these dogs? What's this is, this is different. So shout out to LaDonna. Another thing she shared, and I, and I hope she's okay with me saying this, she said in the decades of owning Dalmatians, her and her husband had never slept, got, were able to sleep through the night. And after I released the don't wake the mama protocol, don't shake my dog, she, she said they had their first solid night's sleep without being interrupted. You know, I just love people that if you're doing things wrong, you're doing things wrong, erring on the side of the dog. We don't always get it right. But if you err on the side of making, giving that dog their best life, you're never going to be faulted for that. It's a, and LaDonna sure does love her dogs. Um, oh, thank you, Jose. Jose put the link for the nail trimming. That's awesome. Thank you. Uh, yes, I only had one. Don't wake the mama puppy with your puppy. That's awesome. Like you probably will get it. Like, especially like the first night with a puppy, depending on the age, I, my, my wish is that no puppies go home before they're like nine to 12 weeks old. But those nine to 12 weeks at the breeder, hopefully are productive and engaging and confidence

building for the dog. I saw a post the other day where somebody said they got their puppy at six weeks and at six and a half weeks, it doesn't seem to have settled. That's not good. Why isn't that good? Because a lot of social lessons and social direction comes from the litter mates and the mother between six and 10 weeks. So, um, when, when I, I used to breed, I bred Jack Russell terriers and I bred border collies and my border collies stayed with me till they were 10 weeks old. And my Jack Russells, which I bred earlier did not, they, they left at about seven and a half weeks, which I think is too young. So what I love to watch is the interaction. Like for me, my experience, the, the puppies and the mother does all the mothering young, but then between five and seven weeks, the puppies learn through playing with each other. Um, the, you know, social conduct with another puppy. And then at about eight to 10 weeks is when the mother comes back in and starts learning or teaching. Um, often I find the mothers take one puppy at a time. Like they just, this one, I'm going to let it like interrupt it. If it's bullying another puppy, my puppies are my, I have never in all the litters that I've bred. Um, I have never seen a mother growl, snap, or pick up a puppy by its scruff. That's just not my experience. The mothers tend to, of the litters that I've bred, teach the puppies by, um, play or walking away from play. Why are you walking beside me? You goofy, you can go go sniffies. Good boy. Uh, how do you teach a solid recall? Maple comes 95% of the time, but I can't get the last 5% perfect. I've been using a harness and a long line. We go to the parks and work on a recall. So if you, if it's at all possible, I would join our recallers program. Um, I personally don't use a long line for the training of recalls. However, when we bring in an older rescue dog, we do because a great reinforcer for dogs. When you're working on the recall, like some dogs like treats or some dogs like tug, but sometimes those aren't high enough value. So freedom, like you're walking on a six foot leash with me. I'm reinforcing you for hanging out with me and you've done a great job. And then I'm going to give you the freedom of having the entire long line. And then I'll call you and you can chase me. We can play some games. So for, for my experience, the most reliable recalls I've ever had have been trained through games. And back in the day, in the, in the late eighties, I taught with a choke chain and a long line and a come pop, come pop.

And, um, those were not as reliable as the recallers protocol, which is building a relationship and using extraordinary things as reinforcement. And your dog will tell you what that extraordinary thing is. I don't know what's going on here. Let me see if I can change the, there we go. Um, oops, so I don't know what's particularly sniffy. She doesn't often go off the path. This, see, we're going to go this way. So that's the kind of response I want for my dogs. They could be in the middle of something and I'll just say we're going this way. That is just an expectation because of the relationship we have and the foundation that I've given them. I don't have to stomp my feet and grit my teeth and say, because I said so. It's because I have this expectation because of the trust that we've developed. Um, uh, Brandy said, I'll get recallers. Should I wait until January or get it now to get my feet wet before she arrives? Brandy, contact the team, wag at dogs that.com. I always tell people if you can get a month, at least a month of diving into the content, setting up the environment and hit your, hit the ground running. It will always be better. The deer, the deer sleep in there. So that's probably what she was sniffing, Jose. You're right. Um, but she's definitely, uh, on the scent of something this morning. She's certainly curious about, and we have coyotes here too. Like something's got her nose. Goofy girl. I love dogs to be inquisitive. And I love that, um, they have the freedom to be themselves and do what they want to do when we're out walking. Okay. Somebody, somebody has cut their pad. That's the challenge when you're walking in crusty snow. Darn it. Okay. Oh, I love that. We are three years into recaller. We came from the training and stayed with the community. So when you join recallers, it's a year long membership. And at the end of the year, we create a, uh, very friendly. Um, okay. Coming back up to the house. If you don't have any questions, I'm, I'm testing YouTube live versus Facebook live. We tend to get a lot more people on Facebook lives and we do YouTube lives. Um, oh, Tammy, I skipped your question. Put the, put the question back in because I must not have seen it. I did talk about demand barking. If that was you.

Um, the reason why I wanted to do YouTube live is because Facebook lives get deleted by Facebook. Facebook after 30 days. And we have a lot of great questions that happen. Oh, there you are. So I decided to try and do YouTube and I just posted a heads up on Facebook and I'll go back over there and post the link afterwards. Um, Tanya, are you going to give me that question? Because I'll probably answer it for you. I don't know why my camera keeps flipping. My eight-year-old dog barks at the TV constantly. Oh, that's a great question. Okay. First thing you would do is you would create what we call a hot zone. And that is an area where the dog will get reinforced for being in whenever you're watching TV. My, for my suggestion is you start with that hot zone in a location where the dog can't see the TV. So you create, um, value for the hot zone and not just by the TV room because we're taking away something that's very reinforcing for the dog. Barking at the TV. Very reinforcing. We've got to replace it with something that's also very reinforcing for the dog. Um, so I would use the hot zone around outside of the kitchen because who doesn't, you know, isn't it a good thing when the dog doesn't beg at the table? Um, so hot zone could be a dog bed with sides or a raised dog bed. Those are my two criteria. Dog bed that has sides because then it's clear for the dog where the boundary is. Um, I do believe there is a YouTube video. Um, you can start with targets. Uh, it's called, uh, purchase and pivots. I think we'll teach you how to start that. Um, and you could then say, okay, big meaty bone comes out only when you're in your bed, when I'm watching TV. When you're done watching TV, trade the dog for what's left of the bone and give the dog like a high value treat while you trade him to take the bone away. Um, so that they associate being in a bed watching TV while you're watching TV and they're not barking. And you're going to, that, that is not, not creating a behavior. It's just creating an alternate behavior so we can establish not barking is a good thing. And then you can throw cookies at them while they're eating their bone. And then we're going to fade the, the really amazing bone to maybe a, like a normal two-week for your dog. Um, what you don't want to do. And this is where having a relationship where you can just say one word and the dogs reply. And that comes through the games that we play. What you don't want to do is just keep telling the dog on the bed, on the bed, on the bed. Once they know hot zone, they know it means you get on there until I ask you to get off.

Now, because you've, you're establishing those rules. You never ask the dog to go on the hot zone and then leave. And the dog can come off anytime they want. Sometimes it's anytime to a dog. Okay.
