Most dogs have one thing they absolutely love. In the case of my nine-month-old puppy, this, it's chasing birds, chasing other dogs, or just running. So I've put that on cue, and when she does something that I have asked, I'll reward that by giving her something she wants, the thing before the thing. I'll mark it like this and tell her, go play. Okay, that gives her permission to do what she wants. The value of her running gets built into the value of her walking beside me. The value of your dog's favorite thing, going for a swim, gets put into the behavior they're doing right before you give them that permission. If it's pulling on a leash, that gets stronger. Now watch this. This! No matter where she is, what a good girly! She'll come back. It's all about the thing before the thing.
