어떠한 종류의 행동 문제든 그에 대한 해답은 항상 기술에 있습니다. 제 말은, 그것이 분석적 기술이든 아니면 매우 뛰어난 인지적 기술이든 간에 결국 그렇게 될 수밖에 없다는 것입니다. 하지만 결국에는 운동 기술 또한 적용해야 합니다. 설정(setups)에 대해 이해해야 합니다. 설정을 생각해 내기 위해 상상력을 발휘해야 합니다. 그리고 이것은 복사해서 붙여넣는 식으로 되는 것이 아닙니다. 이 부분은 매우 신중하게 설명해 드리겠습니다. 만약 여러분이 '반려견의 반응성 행동에 어떻게 대처하는지 알려주는' 수업에 참여한다고 칩시다. 하지만 그 전에, 수백만 가지 상황이 존재하기 때문에 모든 시나리오를 다 다룰 수는 없다는 점을 먼저 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 그래서 그들이 보여줄 것은 반려견의 행동, 반려견의 자세, 즉 순수한 인지적 수준에 관한 것들일 것입니다. 즉, 책에 나와 있는 정보를 제공하는 것입니다. 반려견을 어떻게 바라보고, 어떻게 읽어야 하는지, 바디 랭귀지 등등에 관한 정보를 제공하는 것이죠. 하지만 그렇다고 해서 여러분이 상황을 분석하고 빠르게 이해하여 개입할 수 있는 능력이 생기는 것은 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 개입은 이제 실전 적용으로 넘어가야 하는 것을 의미하기 때문입니다. 이는 곧 여러분의 운동 기술과 의사 결정 능력을 의미합니다. 인지적으로 알고 있는 내용을 적용하고, 찰나의 순간에 분석 및 평가하여 해결책을 내놓는 것입니다. 그건 반응성 행동 수업에서 배울 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 순수한 기술 개발의 영역입니다. 따라서 어느 하나만 할 수는 없습니다. 발을 땅에 딛고 현실을 직시해야 합니다. 만약 반려견을 마스터하고 싶은데 발달이 한쪽으로 너무 치우쳐서, 반려견을 누구보다 잘 이해할 수는 있지만 리드줄 기술이나 섬세함, 도구 사용 등 필요한 조치를 빠르고 정확하게 취할 수 없다면 말이죠. 어떻게 훌륭한 반려견 훈련사가 될 수 있겠습니까? 왜냐하면 그 사람은 머리는 아주 똑똑할지 몰라도 말입니다. 그들은 하루 종일 개에 대해 이야기할 수 있습니다. 그런데 실제로 그들이 직접 솔루션을 만들거나 문제를 해결하려고 하면, 그다지 잘하는 것 같지가 않아요. 알겠어요? 그래서 예를 들어, 행동 관련 문제가 생기면 정부가 왜 항상 수의사에게 조언을 구하는지 저는 여전히 이해가 안 됩니다. 그들이 뭘 안다고요? 그들은 책을 읽었을 뿐이죠. 공부만 한 거예요. 어쩌면 개와 행동에 관해 석사나 박사 학위를 받았을지도 모르죠. 그게 뭐든 적용할 수 있다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 그래서 제게는 적용 능력이 인지적 지식을 갖추는 것만큼이나 중요합니다. 그냥 적용만 한다면, 왜 그런 행동을 하는지 알 수가 없죠. 그건 그냥 운일 뿐이에요. 결과가 어떻게 될지 고민 없이 그냥 행동만 하는 것이니까요. 그러니 그것도 똑같이 어리석은 일이죠, 안 그래요? 하지만 여러분, 둘 다 필요합니다. 그러니 '나는 행동학에 대해서만 안다'라고만 해서는 안 돼요.
And the answer in any type of behavioral issue is always going to be skills. I mean, it's just going to be that way if that's an analytical skill or you have a very good cognitive skill. But in the end, you'll have to apply a motor skill also. You have to understand setups. You have to create imagination to come up with setups. And this doesn't go from copy-paste. Let me explain this one very carefully. If you sit into a class and the class is called, I'm going to show you what you do with reactive behavior. But first, let me tell you, there's a million situations, so you can't go over each and every scenario. So what they will show you is dog behavior, is dog posture, is things that are actually pure cognitive level. That means they're going to give you information that's in a book. It's going to give you information on how to see dogs, how to read dogs, body language, and so on. But that's not you being able to analyze then what happens and being quickly to understand and to intervene. Because intervention means now we go into practical application. It means you, motor skills, decision making. You applying what you know cognitively and you've analyzed, assessed in a split second, and you come with solutions. That's not something you're going to learn in a reactive behavior class. That is pure skill development. So you can't go do one without the other. So you have to put your feet on the ground and understand that if you want to master dogs, but you're so one lopsided in development that you can understand dogs better than anyone, but you cannot do the things that need to be done fast, accurate, with leash skills, with finesse, with tools, and so on. How are you ever going to be a great dog trainer? Because now this person then might be so smart. They could talk all day about dogs. And then when you see them actually try to create the solution or solve the problem hands on, it doesn't really look all that good now. You see? And that's why, for example, veterinarians, I still don't understand why the government always talks, refers to veterinarians when it comes to behavior-related problems. What do they know? They read a book. They studied it. Maybe they got a master or PhD about dogs and behavior. That doesn't mean they can apply anything. So for me, the application is just as valuable as having the cognitive skill. If you just apply things, we don't know why you're doing it. That's just luck then. It's just action without any contemplation on how it's going to turn out. So that just equally is stupid, right? But you need the both, guys. So you can't just go, I only know about behavior.

아무것도 묻지 말라는 식은 안 됩니다. 보세요, 저는 행동학자는 아니지만 에너지와 행동을 어떻게 제어해야 하는지는 압니다. 하지만 행동학 수업을 듣지 않았기 때문에 제가 행동학자라는 건 아니에요. 제게는 행동 문제가 있는 개들이 있지만, 저는 다른 방식으로 해결합니다. 제 답은 항상 기술이었습니다. 경찰견도 마찬가지고, 흔히 있는 반응성 있는 개나, 리다이렉션이 필요한 개, 어떤 종류의 개든 우리는 기술을 가지고 대처합니다. 그게 바로 문제를 해결하는 열쇠죠. 우리는 항상 목적을 만듭니다. 우리에겐 장기적인 비전이 있습니다. 우리는 도구를 다룰 수 있습니다. 우리는 리드줄을 다룰 수 있습니다. 우리는 개의 사고 패턴을 조작할 수 있습니다. 우리는 상황을 설계할 수 있습니다. 우리는 사전에 준비할 수 있습니다. 우리는 기술을 바탕으로 팀과 소통할 수 있습니다. 그리고 그것이 우리가 성공을 향해 나아가는 방식입니다. 저에게 있어 유일한 방법은 항상 여러 기술을 동시에 결합하여 실질적으로 적용하는 것이었습니다. 그렇게 하면 다른 누구보다 더 낫고, 더 빠르며, 더 효율적인 결과를 얻을 수 있습니다. 하지만 그렇다고 해도, 더 빠르고 효율적인 결과는 필요한 기술을 습득했을 때에만 가능합니다. 즉, 때로는 문제를 해결하는 것보다 그 기술을 습득하는 데 더 오랜 시간이 걸릴 수도 있다는 뜻입니다. 하지만 기술이 없으면 문제를 해결할 수 없습니다. 무슨 말인지 아시겠어요? 그러니 이는 필연적으로 연결되어 있는 것입니다. 당신과 개 말이죠. 개를 훈련시키려면 당신이 숙련되어야 합니다. 다른 방법은 없습니다. 다른 방법은 없습니다.
Don't ask me anything. Look, I'm not a behaviorist, but I know how to control energy and behavior. But that doesn't make me a behaviorist because I didn't take the class of behavior. But I have dogs with behavioral issues, but I solve them with a different approach. My answer has always been skill. For the police also, common reactive dogs, redirecting dogs, like any type of dog, we come with a skill set. That's what's going to solve the problem. We always create purpose. We have long-term vision. We can handle tools. We can handle leashes. We can manipulate the thinking patterns of the dog. We can contemplate setups. We can prepare things. We can communicate with a team based on skills. And that's how we go for success. That's just the only way for me has always been practical application of multiple skills being combined simultaneously. So you have a better, faster, more efficient outcome than anybody else. But that said, faster, more efficient can only be done if you've acquired those necessary skills. And that means sometimes it takes longer for you to acquire those skills than it takes to solve the problem. But without the skills, you can't solve it. You see? So it's inevitably connected. You and the dog. If you're going to train the dog, you have to be skilled. There is no other way. There is no other way.
