그리고 무슨 일이 벌어지냐면, 환경에 대한 개의 애착이나 그 환경이 가진 힘은 시간이 지날수록 커지는 무언가입니다. 예를 들어, 여러분은 '아, 우리 개는 음식을 정말 좋아해'라고 말할지도 모릅니다. 그리고 중요한 것은 여러분의 개가 어디서 음식을 얻느냐 하는 점입니다. 글쎄요, 우리는 훈련을 하고 제가 간식을 주죠. 정말 그게 다일까요? 개가 부엌에 들어가서 걸레받이 근처를 킁킁거리며 냄새를 맡는 건 어떨까요? 여러분이 음식을 썰었던 곳 말이죠. 혹시 떨어진 부스러기가 있나 해서요. 있잖아요? 개는 그곳을 10번, 20번씩 냄새 맡을지도 모릅니다. 아무것도 없죠. 그러다 21번째에 여러분도 몰랐던 떨어진 치즈 조각을 크게 하나 발견하는 겁니다. 만약 여러분이 팟캐스트 174회를 들어보셨다면, 제가 도파민이 가장 많이 분비될 때는 개가 부정적 예측 오류를 경험할 때라고 말씀드린 적이 있습니다. 즉, 강화물로 기대했던 것이 실제로 얻은 것보다 훨씬 못할 때를 말하죠. 그러니 만약 여러분의 개가 이 치즈 조각을 찾는다면, 세상에나, 이제 모든 환경에서 냄새를 맡기 시작할 겁니다. 어딘가 다른 곳 바닥에도 하늘에서 떨어진 선물 같은 게 있을지 모르니까요. 그래서 이렇게 킁킁거리며 냄새를 맡거나 심지어 핥기 시작하는 것을 첫째, 여러분은 알아차리지 못할 수도 있습니다. 혹은 둘째, 나중에 여러분의 발등을 찍게 될 세 마디를 뱉게 될지도 모릅니다. 바로 '난 상관없어'라는 말이죠. 그래요, 바닥 냄새를 맡아서 뭔가를 찾았네. 난 상관없어. 보시다시피, 우리가 의도적으로 학습 단계를 만들어가는 것은 강화를 사용할 때 정말 멋진 일입니다. 하지만 학습 단계가 환경을 통해 우연히 일어날 때도 똑같이 강력하지만, 그것은 우리에게 불리하게 작용합니다. 왜냐하면 그다음에는 이런 일이 생기기 때문이죠. 개가 부엌에서 냄새를 맡으며 돌아다니다가 어느 날 식기세척기가 열려 있는데 냄새를 맡더니 '오, 여기 접시에 음식이 남아있네'라고 생각하게 되는 거죠. 그래서 접시를 핥기 시작합니다. 그래도 난 상관없어. 난 상관없어. 그러다 보면 어떤 일이 벌어지냐면, '아, 바닥에 뭐가 있네. 또 뭐가 있지' 하게 되는 거죠. 한 단계 더 높은 것을 건드립니다. 이건 뭐지? 아, 쓰레기통이네. 그냥 넘어뜨리거나 뚜껑을 열고 머리를 집어넣어야지. 처음 시도했을 때는 안에 아무것도 없을지도 모릅니다. 두 번째, 열 번째, 스무 번째도 마찬가지일 수 있죠. 하지만 스무한 번째에는, 어떨까요? 딩딩딩. 라스베이거스의 잭팟처럼 큰 보상을 받게 됩니다. 부정적 예측 오류죠. 쾅! 이제 보이는 모든 쓰레기통을 다 넘어뜨릴 겁니다. 여러분은 그런 행동이 싫을 수 있겠죠. 그래서 쓰레기통을 가져다가, 방을 나갈 때마다 카운터 위로 올려두어 그런 일이 더 이상 일어나지 않게 합니다. 하지만 우리는 바닥에서 시작했죠. 거기서 충분한 강화를 얻었습니다. 식기세척기까지 올라갔고, 거기서 또 다른 것들을
And what happens is the dog's love for the environment or the power of that environment is something that grows over time. So, for example, you might say, oh, my dog loves food. And it's this awareness of where does your dog get food? Well, you know, we train, I give him treats. Really? Is that all? What about when he goes in the kitchen, he sniffs around the baseboard where you were cutting to see if there's any scraps? Guess what? He might sniff there 10 times, 20 times, nothing to be found. And then the 21st time he finds a big chunk of cheese that you didn't know that had fallen. And if you listen to podcast episode number 174, I talked about dopamine hits are the highest when the dog gets a negative prediction error, meaning what they were expecting to get as a reinforcement was not anywhere near as good as what they got. And so, if your dog finds this piece of cheese, then holy smokes, I'm going to start sniffing all my environments. Maybe there'll be manna from heaven on the floor somewhere else. And so, this sniffing around, or maybe even start licking around, you, number one, might not notice it. Or number two, you might utter the three words that will come back and bite you in the butt. And that is, I don't mind. Yeah, he sniffed the floor, he found something. I don't mind. See, layers of learning happening intentionally through us are really cool things when we're using reinforcement. Layers of learning when they're happening accidentally through the environment are equally as powerful, but they're working against us. Because what happens next is in that dog's sniffing around the kitchen, one day the dishwasher is open and he starts sniffing and he's like, oh, there's food left on these plates. So, he'll start licking the plates. I don't mind. I don't mind. So, then what happens is, oh, I got stuff on the floor. I got stuff the next level up. What's this? Oh, it's a garbage bin. I'm just going to knock that over or flip the lid up and stick my head in. And there might not be anything in there the first time he does it or the second or the 10th or the 20th. The 21st time though, guess what? Ding, ding, ding. Just like the jackpots in Las Vegas. He gets a big payout. Negative prediction error. Boom, I'll be knocking over every garbage bin I can find. Now, you might mind about that. So, you start taking the garbage bins, putting them up on the counter when you leave the room so that that doesn't happen anymore. But we started on the floor. We got some good reinforcement there. We got up to the dishwasher, some more stuff

Oh, and just crumbs are good. Lo and behold, they keep sniffing time and time again. And I don't know what time it is that they're going to find big handfuls of food that the baby left there. Ding, ding, ding. The kitchen pays out big. Environmental rewards for the dog. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Found the floor, in the dishwasher, in the garbage can, on the baby's tray. How about I just check the counters? Like just go right to the source. And all of a sudden we get people writing in and saying, I don't know, out of the blue, he just started counter surfing. He was never a counter surfer. I don't know how it happened, Susan. It's that darn environment always wins.
