The Foundation of Puppy Socialization

(Power of training dogs with food)에서 보여드린 훈련을 수행합니다.
Music Socializing puppies is an important part of pack structure. And the reason for it is that when puppies are socialized correctly, they look at the owner as a pack leader because in their mind, the owner is protecting them from the rest of the world. Socializing puppies is one of the most misunderstood areas of dog training. A lot of people think that socializing puppies means taking them out, getting them used to interacting with people, with other dogs, and going into very difficult places. That's really not the way to look at it. That's not the way we look at it. We look at socializing like we want our puppies to get used to people, places, and things, but they don't have to interact with people, and they don't have to interact with other dogs. It's a misconception when people say, Oh, my dog needs to have other dog friends. No, your dog doesn't need to have other dog friends. Your dog needs to be part of a pack. It genetically wants to be part of a pack. And that dog's pack has to be you and your family. So the way that we approach socializing our puppies is we take them out and we show them new environments. And when we put them into a new environment, we look for engagement in the puppy. So when we go, we have a bait bag. The puppy's high-value treats are in the bait bag. We take the puppy to a new environment, and we don't get out and try and stress the puppy by showing them, Oh, look at this. We get out and we engage the puppy. We get the puppy following us. We do the work that we show in the power of training dogs with food. But if you want to have a well-socialized puppy, you will learn how to get engagement in new locations. So what we do to socialize the puppy is try a number of times a week taking them to new locations. We don't always take them to the same spot. And when we take them to a new location, we get out and we engage them. We'll go near a dog park, never in a dog park, and we'll engage the puppy. We'll teach them that, Hey, I am way more interesting than what's going on over there. And if you do this enough in enough places in the week, your puppy is going to go to a new place, and it's going to get out of the car, and it's going to think, Oh, this is cool. New place. I'm going to get some really high-value treats here. This is going to be fun. My owner is going to play with me or have his favorite toy, get him out, play with him, put him back in, go someplace else, put him back in, take him home, let him think about what just happened. When we're talking about socialization, and we're talking about engagement,

and we're going to take our puppy to a number of different locations every single day, here's something to keep in the back of your mind. You have to have engagement at your house. You have to have engagement in your backyard. And you have to have engagement in your garage before you decide to take the dog someplace else to get engagement or to socialize the puppy. You know, so take this in small steps. Get your engagement in your house. Get your engagement outside. Get your engagement on your neighbor's lawn. Go down the block. A few houses, get engagement down there. Then go on the next block. Once you can do that, then you can start to say, Okay, we're going to go to the park and do engagement. Okay, we're going to go and we're going to do engagement a block from the train station. But if you can't get engagement in your puppy in your living room, in your kitchen, in your garage, in your backyard, the puppy's not ready to go out and go someplace else to try and get engagement. It's just not going to happen. You're setting unrealistic goals. Again, the most important socialization is the first six months of your dog's life. But if you just stop at that point, and lots of people do. I took my puppy all these places when I was little, and now I don't anymore. And you see that dog, and later on they have issues. They'll backslide too. A lot of dogs will, right? Especially in the environments you expect your dog to perform, right? I used to see a lot of this when I was on the East Coast when we were in New York, right? Somebody would get a dog from a breeder in Connecticut, and they'd come into the city, into New York. Not the same environment at all, right? So that dog may have been well socialized in suburban environments and all that kind of stuff, but it had nothing like being in the middle of the city. And so those dogs struggled. And then the people got a home in the country, and so they went back out to the country. Now the dog's living in the burbs, and so they didn't go into the city with the dog. And two years later they decided to go back into the city, and their dog's backslid again. It's like, whoa, this place, right? So some dogs are really solid. What they learn when they're young, they're fine everywhere for the rest of their life. Other dogs, you'll need to maintain it. And if you remove yourself from certain socialization exposure, the dog can slide backward. So remember, it's still going on. The biggest impressions we make are the first ones, that early time, but you still continue to socialize.
