This is about a puppy that runs around with sticks in his mouth and then vomits parts of these sticks after they've played with them. But this one says, hi, thanks for your great content on YouTube and on learburg.com. My six month old mini Australian Shepherd loves to chew on sticks and branches and have play sessions. But when he's done, he's vomiting up wood chips. Any suggestions to stop that behavior or is it okay for him to chew on sticks? Thank you. Good question. Pretty common thing for people to let their dogs run around and throw a stick for them. Not a good idea. I would not allow this behavior is what Cindy said, nor would I. Not only because of the vomiting that is going on, but it could cause a blockage of your dog's digestive track. And Cindy says this is good because we know this from our friend. We have a very good friend who recently had to have one of her dog's eyes surgically removed because the dog was running with a stick in its mouth, holding it by the end. The end protruded through the roof of the mouth into the eye socket of the dog and they had to take the eye out. You think, how can that happen? This dog was a border terrier that belonged to a very, very good friend of ours. And you think about how it happened. The dog's running around. It's got a stick in its mouth and they're not carrying it like that. Maybe it's carrying it like that. And if it runs into something, bam, it's going to go into the back of the mouth. It can happen so easy if you've got a high drive dog. So stop that behavior right off the bat. Don't even do it. It's a terrible exercise for anyone, Cindy says. Dogs do love sticks, but they can be a problem and I personally don't risk it with my own dogs. If you're doing structural play with your dog, then have them on a long line and simply don't allow them to get to a stick.

Or move to a location where the option is not even there. You could give him something else to chew on and carry. We offer a few safe sticks made for dogs to play with that are made out of rubber, hard rubber material that can be an option for your dog. You're probably better off, quite frankly, to, if you have a dog that really, really loves these sticks, introduce the dog to other toys and build the drive in the dog to another toy. We have these foam balls that dogs just love. And they come, you can pick various straps to put on them so you can play games with them there. We have leather straps, which is what I personally prefer. The Amish cut our leashes into these straps and we have biothane and we have, you can put a rope on them. But we also have these round puller toys. Cindy's German Shepherd, Art, loves these round puller toys. And what she'll do, and she takes Art down to our training field a couple times a day and plays with him. And he'll use these puller toys and run like crazy. And then when he's done, she gives him the puller toy and he carries it around because he loves it. Same thing can happen with like these foam balls that we have or these hard rubber balls that are on strings. We don't really recommend a hard ball unless it has a string on it because these balls are about that big around. And an adult dog, a big large dog, can go down in their throat and it can cause a blockage and it can kill the dog. That's why we sell them with a rope on them so you can pull them out. But my point is, it's not about a dog dying from a ball. My point is, build some drive for your dog for other toys. Introduce them to these other toys. Play games with them. We have really good, good videos on how to form relationships with your dog. And it involves some of this work of playing with toys, teaching them how to play, teaching them that these toys are your toys, not the dog's toys. And you let them play with your toys. But at the end of the time, you take those toys and you put them away. You don't let them go into the house and chew on them and cause problems there too. It just builds more drive for the toys where at the end of the play section, they're put away. So I hope that answers the question for this person. Don't let your dog run around with a stick in its mouth. You're just asking for a vet business and maybe a serious injury on your dog.
