What If Markers Didn't Exist?!

What would happen if you stopped marking today? When would you get stuck? When would you say, raise your hands, you're like, you know, guys, this is it. This is as far as it goes. I can't move any further. I need myself a marker. Think about it because we all do the stuff people tell us, right? You're probably going to go into MVP. I said, Nino told me to do this stuff. I'm going to do this. He told me not to use a marker. I'm like, I'm going to use a marker. But you got to think for yourselves. You really got to be more, I would say, skeptic about things, including this program. You have to be skeptic and think to yourself, what is all this nonsense? He start doing this type of stuff. That doesn't make sense to me. Very counterintuitive. And when it gets counterintuitive, that's when you got to ask, why would anybody do this? It doesn't make sense. The logic is gone. And this is what happened to me. When I saw all these people marking in the early ages with their dogs, I thought this logic doesn't make sense. What are you going to mark actually? Because there's two things in life with a dog. There's the things he does spontaneously, which is what I call behavior. Like, for example, you're sitting on the couch. Your dog's next to you. He wakes up before you or you're just watching TV, whatever. And your dog starts chewing your shoes or your slippers or the carpet or whatever. Whatever. That is, the dog chose to do something because like, well, let me do this. Okay. So spontaneous behavior. Spontaneous behavior versus, think about this. I'm taking my dog outside. I'm going to do a training session, which I've premeditated. I know exactly what I'm going to do or I'm going to try to do. I set this up. So I want this and this to happen. I got this and this reward with me. I got this leash, whatever. You see, you got a bunch of things going on versus my dog just wakes up and does things. I mean, two complete different dimensions, but still the same dog in the same life you're leading. Two different outcomes, two different ways of communicating also with your dog. So my question would be, if it's not for him waking up and doing all sorts of spontaneous stuff that you wouldn't know what he's up to. We go into the other equation, which is the development equation. It's where you train your dog when you set things up. And here, my question is, when are you going to use this mark? What are you going to mark? You just started. What are you going to mark when you just start? He sat on his butt. Are you going to mark this? Or you just, you made him sit on his butt and you deliver what you had.

You didn't have to mark it because you deliver what the dog was chasing in the beginning. So you basically use his natural instinct. He was chasing my hand and I pushed back. The dog pushed back also. Then I opened my hand. So it's literally the most simplistic form of communication is I move, he moves, dog gets what they want because they just chased it. They just went after it. And that was rewarding itself. So simplest form of communication. Would that be more interesting? Or would you put your money on the marker and say, no, I first want to load my marker. I first got to charge this stuff. And then when he does something that I like, I can at least tell him that's the exact thing that I wanted. But if you think about it just for a second, if you just think about this and think a predator, what is the most important thing for a predator? Is what he sees, what he smells and what he sees. Let's take the scent out of the equation. Oh, no, actually, let's take it back into the equation because you're going to use food. For example, if you start smell food, see it, you got your dog's attention. It wasn't so much about what they heard. Because I'll tell you this. If your dog sees something that is extremely interesting, but they hear something going on, they might tilt their ear, but they're still going to look at what they see. So they always go with what they see and what they smell and what they can relate to. Their instinct drives them to this source, this point of interest. So that means, actually, the first way of communicating is visually, is with what gets a dog to become active. And what is the outcome of this activity? Break it down to the most simple form. Remember, I was talking to you about talent, about combining skills and analytical skills, cognitive skills. We got motor skills going on. But now I'm just bringing it back to your dog's going to chase, open a food. You're not even going to say anything. Forget about the dog's name. Forget about the markers. Forget about everything. Just make them move. The first way of communication is you enable their potential by moving. And why is that so important? Because if your dog couldn't move, let's say, for example, he wouldn't have any paws. Let's just make it ridiculous, but go with the story. How could we measure its potential? Let's say you have the genetic best dog in the world, but he has no paws. An accident happened, he has no paws. What can I possibly do to show that this was the best dog in the world? If he has no paws, he can't do anything. He can't move. He can't be explosive. He can't be fast.

He can't respond because he just simply can't do anything. That means the first enabler of the dog's talent is, by definition, movement. Nothing else. It wasn't his ears. Oh, he's got such a great scent. No, it wasn't that either. None of that would matter if he can't move. So we have to enable his talent by making him move. So you're going to make him move. He can't make himself move. We're only just very limited. He can move forward. If he's really stuck, he might move a little bit backwards. But he's not going to come into pivots with his head straight up and his nice angle. That's not going to happen, okay? That's something we fabricate. So what the dog is going to come up with is very limited. So we enable the dog's talent by making him move and slide and turn and do these things. Because at some point, we're going to ask for these things. And he's going to be in a quite awkward angle from us. And he has to find his way into this position. Very underestimated. Remember, we were marking. We were timing. Marking and timing. Marking, guys. Timing. Yeah, but if he can't move, what are you going to mark? If it takes him six seconds to get into this position and he was literally one step away from you, you're going to mark that? It's like, sit. And then he's like, he looked at you. And then he goes into slow motion. And then by the time his butt hits the ground, you go, Mark. Now at least the dog understands. I wanted him to sit. And let's hope it becomes faster. Now, I'll tell you this. My brain's going all over the place. I'm sorry. You'll have to live with me for this onboarding. I'll tell you this. Dog wants to control. And it's like, as a predator, I'm going to call it a predator because this makes a lot of sense to me. The predator wants to control directions in its life. There is no predator that is just going to make himself a slave and follow you. That just doesn't happen. Dogs, when they're very young, they follow you. Like there's little puppies. You ever had a five, six week old puppy? Oh, you can go any place in the city. Usually, if they're not afraid, they'll just follow you. They're like, oh, yeah, let me follow you. But after a while, after a few weeks, they go with their own direction, their own sights. You know, they see something and they want to go after it. Okay. So that means they have their own ways of pace. And I mean, they will usually go faster than you. And they usually go in the opposite direction or not where you want to go. Okay. So dogs want to choose directions. So keep that in mind. Directions. Dog want to choose directions. Predator is very driven by what it sees.

It smells where it wants to go. Okay. Second thing a predator chooses, or basically any animal, I would say, is the pace. That means the speed of execution. Like, oh, I want this. Now I'm going to go faster. I want to kill this dog. Now I'm going to go very fast. Oh, now you're recalling me to come. I'm going to go very slow. You see? So the dog wants to choose the pace based on the interest and the incentive. And a whole other bunch of things. But let's just keep it simple for now. It's a dog. Want to choose direction. Wants to choose the pace. And then there's something else they want to choose. And oh, my God. That's going to get you in a whole lot of trouble. What would that third thing be? I'll give it to you right now. It is the reward. They want to choose what reward. What kind of source they accept from you. What do you mean? Well, I mean, if there was a ball and there was a bowl of food and a dog had a choice. Well, you could say, well, out of 100 dogs, probably 90% would take the ball first. Why? Because they have a lot of prey drive. And naturally, a predator first needs to get his prey drive to be met. Like, you know, he chases things. And then when he killed everything, nothing moves. Now they start eating. That would make sense. But we have been domesticating dogs for a long time. So the predator has altered some of its foundational, I would say, instincts. And some of them first want to eat before they move. The lab is one of them. The lab wants to eat first before he wanted to chase them. Although he does like to chase. But when he could see something to eat first, he'll probably eat first. And then he'll go with a full belly after what is moving. I don't know. Just a weird thing. But lab is just a weird. I mean, it's a fun dog. But it has its weird ways. So, okay. That means your dog chooses first. Like, you can say, dog, go for this first. Well, he wants to choose. Dog has choices also. And they'll go, for example, if you're going a little bit further, protection training. Go after the decoy. Or go after your piece of kibble that you just tossed. And say, come back. I tossed you a piece of kibble. Your dog is going to go, are you crazy? We're going to bite this person. That's going to be the best time of my life. F you and your kibble. Bye. No need for that. So, they're going to choose the reward. Remember the reward. Okay. Now, you've got a big problem. You've got some conflicts here going on. Because your dog wants to choose directions. Your dog wants to choose the pace. And your dog wants to choose the reward. Now, those are the three things that you actually want to control.

And I'll tell you right now, you want to control directions. Everybody who says, I got a healing problem. Says, actually, I'm choosing a direction. My dog doesn't want to go with me. And the same way. And the same pace. Okay. So, the pace, which was the second one. But also, the pace of moving. Well, he listens. But it's kind of slow. I never heard anybody say, my dog is too fast. I never heard anybody say this. Nobody ever messaged me. I said, dog's too fast. What do you mean he's too fast? Well, yeah. When I'm asking him something, he explodes. And he does it. I don't know if that's a problem. I see. But probably people feel the same way. And they never told me their dog was too fast. So, that means that is an asset. You making your dog fast is an asset. So, why are we still thinking in traditional training of marking something that's not fast? But how do you make it faster? By marking better? By giving him more food when you mark? No. By showing him how to use its body faster and more efficient. And that's how you make them fast. Not by marking. So, that means if you want to influence their speed, you'll have to do it manually and not by audio. You'll have to show how fast you can move. Now, of course, a lot of people say, all right, let me show them how fast they can go. And they go so fast that no dog in the world could ever possibly follow up with a hand. And that's why we call it to be unsynced. It's a word we like to use. It's not unsynced. You'll hear me say that in reviews of MVPs a lot in the certification center. It's not synced. We're looking for synced. Why? It's because when you sync, you dictate the pace and you feel the dog, if it could move just a little bit faster or not. You see? And if you just move fast, but your dog is slow, well, I'm sorry. You can move fast your whole life. Your dog is not going to get any faster. You see? You've got to become a little bit conscious about what you do. As you consciously were thinking about timing and you were thinking about communicating, we have to think then how do I communicate? And the simplest form of communicating is having to chase something where you dictate the pace and then you just open up and that's it. You don't have to make it a whole lot harder. So you don't have to be mindful of it.
