The puppy-training internet is louder than it has ever been, and most of it is confident, contradictory, and light on evidence. So this year I sat down and made the shortlist I wish I could hand out at every puppy pickup — the resources that actually match what we know about how puppies learn. Why the first 16 weeks matter more than anything else Everything I recommend below is built around one biological fact: your puppy's social brain is under active construction from about three to sixteen weeks of age. What they meet, hear, smell, and practice during that window gets wired in for life. This is the science we teach in The Genius of Dogs and the reason Vanessa Woods and I built the Duke Puppy Kindergarten study in the first place. The best resources in 2026 all share that developmental frame. The worst ones still treat puppies like small adult dogs and try to "train" them out of behaviors that are actually normal exploration.
