리콜(불러오기)이 왜 실패할 수 있는지에 대해 이야기해 봅시다. 제가 생각하는 실패의 가장 큰 원인은 강아지가 성장하면서 원치 않는 행동(반(反)리콜 행동)을 너무 많이 연습하도록 내버려 두기 때문입니다. 원치 않는 행동의 연습이란 구체적으로 어떤 것일까요? 만약 개 전용 문이 있어서 강아지가 마음대로 밖에 나가 하루 종일 다람쥐나 얼룩다람쥐를 쫓아다닌다면, 공원에 갔을 때 강아지가 다른 개나 자전거, 혹은 소리를 지르는 아이들을 쫓고 싶어 하는 것은 당연한 결과입니다. 따라서 그러한 행동의 반복은 훌륭한 리콜을 만드는 것을 더 어렵게 만듭니다. 저는 강아지나 유기견을 데려오면 여러 가지 이유로 항상 리드줄을 매고 함께 밖으로 나갑니다. 하지만 가장 주된 이유는 나중에 다시 교정해야 할 행동들을 강아지가 미리 연습하지 못하게 하기 위해서입니다. 결국 강아지가 일상적으로 환경 속에서 스스로 보상을 찾는 행동을 반복하게 만드는 것은 확실한 리콜을 만들고자 할 때 가장 방해가 되는 가장 큰 요인일 것입니다.
Let's talk about why recalls might fail. I think the number one reason they fail is there's too many rehearsals of anti-recalls allowed as puppies grow up. What does a rehearsal of an undesired behavior look like? If you have a dog door and your dog can go outside, chase squirrels all day, chase chipmunks, then when you're at the park, it's no wonder they want to chase dogs or bicycles or kids squealing. So those rehearsals make it more difficult to get a great recall. When I get a puppy or a rescue dog, they go outside with me on leash for many, many reasons. But the main one is so they don't rehearse behaviors that I'm going to have to untrain in the future. So the rehearsal of a dog being able to find reinforcement in the environment on a routine basis is probably the number one thing that works against you when you're trying to create a reliable bomb-proof recall.
