our next guest is a student i wanted to bring on a student and this was what really the big thing for me was people when i was you know talking on a podcast a couple weeks ago and the comment said well no one's gonna have time for all those layers that she's talking about oh just tell the dog to do it so natalia i'm gonna get her name wrong nitzker natalia you can tell me how badly i butchered that when you come on natalia is an elementary school teacher who enjoys working with dogs as a hobby she lives in the state of georgia with her husband three sons and two dogs so tabby is a five year old german shepherd and kina is a one-year-old malinois natalia volunteers at a local non-profit rescue and dog training organization as well as a service dog training group and runs a trick training group and i believe she's done a trick for wag nation i believe she has and is a certified trick dog instructor natalia is an alumni of homeschool the dog and recallers and a wag nation founding member and susan's programs methodology and podcasts are given natalia a better understanding and confidence and able to work her dogs and spread the joy positive reinforcement and trick training is her favorite okay let's bring her on natalia how are you oh my goodness you got my name perfectly that's a rare yeah it's a rare for me now it's official you get a cookie you get a cookie i get a cookie okay natalia i've got to ask you number one how old was kina when you got her so um i adopted her she was five months love at first sight and um everybody told me she's so melancholy melanois she's so chill we got brought her home you know we worked with our german shepherd which was a little bit um anxious so we put in those layers that we talked about and um we made it work um then some true colors started kicking in and we've been working and um what helped the most is knowing from the beginning where to start with her and um working through recallers you know following the games in order following the coaching and advice what i've learned so far um with working with tabby before it just skyrocketed you know and just brilliant brilliant and um as kamal mentioned you don't need a whole lot of time you talked about quickies on the podcast i don't have a lot of time you know with a full-time job and kids you don't have a lot of time so it it works so how did you do it how did you how do you tater salad wants to know as well how did you do like you're a school teacher and you've got a family and you all have another dog so how did you find time to play those games

음, 저에게 개인적으로 도움이 된 건 전날 밤에 숙제를 조금 하는 것이었어요. 영상을 보고 PDF를 읽으면서 전날 밤에 숙제를 조금 해두면 다음 날 무엇을 해야 할지 알게 되니까요. 그래서 다음 날 아침에는 제가 하는 게임들을 일상적인 상황과 연계해서 구성하려고 노력했어요. 예를 들어 아침에 커피를 타려고 물이 끓기를 기다리는 동안 부엌에서 게임을 몇 가지 해요. 'It's Your Choice'처럼 항상 하는 24시간 훈련이죠. 현관 예절이나 핫존 훈련은 계속 진행 중이고요. 퇴근하고 돌아오면 퀵키를 하곤 했어요. 위층으로 올라가서 옷을 갈아입을 때 퀵키를 하는 식이죠. 강아지들도 이제는 엄마가 집에 오면 계단에서 기다려야 한다는 걸 알아요. 며칠 전에 사진도 찍었는데, 강아지들이 계단에서 저를 보며 언제 오나 하고 기다리고 있었어요. 그러니까 제가 평소에 하는 일상적인 일들과 게임을 연결해서 하나의 루틴으로 만든 거죠. 그래서 금방 끝낼 수 있고, 하루를 활기차게 시작할 수 있어요. 그럼 두 마리의 강아지 사이에서 가장 어려웠던 도전은 무엇이라고 생각하시나요? 이 과정을 진행하면서 막막함을 느꼈던 반려견이 있었나요? 그리고 '아, 생각했던 대로 흘러가지 않네'라고 생각했던 순간이요. 음, 처음 키나(Kinah)를 집에 데려왔을 때 테디(Teddy)가 어떻게 반응할지 몰랐는데, 상황이 정말 좋지 않았어요. 전혀 아름답지 않았죠. 키나는 유기견 보호소 출신인가요? 보호소에서 일하신다고 들었는데 거기서 만나신 건가요? 네, 맞아요. 키나는 제가 자원봉사하는 보호소 출신인데, 그곳에서 축제가 열렸거든요. 입양할 강아지들이 나와 있었는데 정말 완벽했죠. 산책을 돕다가 첫눈에 반해버렸어요. 바로 이 아이라는 생각이 들었지만, 다른 강아지와 잘 어울릴 수 있는지 확인해야 했어요. 테디가 스트레스받는 상황을 만들고 싶지 않았거든요. 당연히 테디를 불행하게 만들고 싶지 않았기에 첫날에는 제 마음속으로 '이건 안 되겠구나, 정말 끔찍해, 잘 안 풀릴 거야'라고 생각했어요. 그런데 다음 날 우리는 훈련을 시작했죠. 입마개 훈련과 컨디셔닝을 해둔 것이 정말 다행이었어요. 우리가 가진 훌륭한 도구들 덕분이었죠. 칼라 그랩(collar grab)이나 입마개에 익숙해져 있어서 정말 다행이었어요. 그래서 조금 더 넓은 외부 공간으로 아이들을 데리고 나가 서로 익숙해지도록 노력했어요. 결론부터 말하자면 키나의 성품과 태도가 도움이 많이 되었던 것 같아요. 키나 같은 성향의 강아지가 테디의 불안감을 어느 정도 해소해 주었죠.
um so what helped me personally is doing a little bit of homework the night before i would watch the um video i would read the pdf kind of do my little homework the night before so i know what i'm doing the next day and um in the morning i tried to structure the games that i play around um contingent times like for example in the morning when i'm waiting for my tea to boil you know to make coffee we play a few games in the kitchen um you know it's your choice as always on the go it's 24 7 you know working at door manners uh hot zone it's ongoing then when i came back from work i would also um have a quickie you know going upstairs when i go change you know we do a quickie upstairs and they know they know by now that when mom is home they're waiting on the staircase ready to right i took a picture the other day they're ready to go looking at me like are you coming are you coming yeah so just yeah try to play around something that i do on a regular basis so it's it's more of a routine for me and i know okay it's it's quick we get it done we keep you know we get the day moving and and what was the what would you say would be the the most difficult challenge between the two dogs like either one of the dogs that when you were working through this that you you hit this wall and you went okay this is not going the way i thought it would go well even initially bringing kinah home um i didn't know how teddy would react and um it did not go pretty it was not pretty at all and was she in a rescue how did you like because i know you work in a rescue is that where you found her yeah yeah kinah's a rescue we're a volunteer with and they were having a festival um and they had dogs for adoption there just kind of perfect um i helped walk her and i just fell in love i'm like this is it but we need to make sure she she um she meshes with the other dog and i didn't want to put tabby through stress you know obviously i didn't want to make her miserable so that first day um in my in the back of my mind i'm like it's not gonna work it's it's it's terrible it's not gonna work the next day we work thank goodness for muzzle training you know and thank goodness for conditioning all those great tools that we have the color grab the muzzle you know she was familiar with it um so we worked through um taking them outside in a little bit more you know open space and getting them familiarized with themselves so long story short i think also kinah's demeanor and kind of attitude helped as well the type of dog she is um helped kind of neutralize some of tabby's insecurities and um

정말 다행히도 해피엔딩으로 끝났네요. 키나를 데려왔을 때 전형적인 '말리게이터(Maligator, 말리노이즈를 지칭)'였나요? 입질이 심했나요? 오, 네. 정말 많이요. 예측할 수 없는 행동을 자주 했어요. 표정만 보면 무슨 생각을 하는지 도통 알 수가 없어서 저도 당황했죠. 네, 정말 그랬어요. 저조차도 조금 불안할 정도였죠. 키나의 행동을 읽을 수가 없었으니까요. 그렇군요. 확실히 저먼 셰퍼드와는 아주 다르죠. 정말 추진력이 강하지만요. 게임을 도입하면 그들의 눈에서 변화를, 그 반짝임을 정말로 볼 수 있게 됩니다. 그 기쁨과 교감을 보게 되고 거기서부터 모든 것이 아름답게 풀려나가죠. 정말 마법 같은 일이에요. 정말 훌륭하네요. 그럼 모든 반려견에게 묘기를 가르치기 시작하신 건 언제부터인가요? 네 맞아요. 그것도 교감의 일부니까요. 그럼 처음 언제부터 묘기를 가르치기 시작하셨나요? 언제부터 반려견에게 묘기를 알려주기 시작했고, 반려견이 '우리 언제 훈련해요? 얼른 해요, 저 이거 하고 싶어요'라고 말하는 듯한 모습을 보게 되었나요? 처음에는 저먼 셰퍼드인 태비에게 묘기를 가르치기 시작했어요. 음, 느슨하게 걷기 훈련이나 복종 훈련 외에도 반려견이 자신감을 얻도록 돕는 방법으로 말이죠. 그게 태비가 내면의 불안감을 떨쳐내고 밖으로 나오는 데 정말 큰 도움이 되었어요. 뭐라고 해야 할까요, 태비가 조금 더 자신감 있는 개로 성장하고 저와 교감을 쌓는 데 도움이 되었죠. 솔직히 말씀드리면 처음엔 저도 뭘 해야 할지 잘 몰랐어요. 그냥 이것저것 시도해 보는 수준이었죠. 그러다 조사도 시작하고 책도 읽기 시작했어요. 당연히 당신의 팟캐스트도 들으면서 셰이핑에 대해 배웠고요. 처음에는 클릭기 없이 알고 있는 마커 워드 같은 걸 활용해서 훈련했어요. 그러다가 점차 지식과 경험이 쌓이게 되었죠. 키나를 데려왔을 때는 리콜러 게임과 묘기 훈련을 결합하기 시작했습니다. 그게 훈련의 모범이 되었어요. 왜냐하면 우리가 가르치는 모든 행동이 묘기라고 생각하거든요. 그런 단계들을 거치면서 작고 점진적인 기초부터 쌓아 올리면 강아지도 이해하게 되죠. 강아지가 성취감을 느끼면 보상할 기회가 생기고, 강아지도 그걸 좋아해요. 둘 다 즐거우니까요. 그래서 지루하게 '아, 훈련해야 해'라는 생각이 드는 게 아니라, 게임처럼 재미있는 활동이 되는 거예요. 두 분 모두에게 경험이 될 것이고 두 분 다 기대하고 계시네요. 이건 두 분께 좋은 질문이겠네요. 스트레스가 많은 환경에서 가장 즐겨 하는 게임은 무엇인가요? 아, 좋은 질문이네요. 저에게는 개마다 다르다고 생각해요. 음, 네, 좋은 질문에 좋은 답변이네요. 상황과 개마다 다르죠. 저 같은 경우에는
thank goodness thank goodness it's you know happy ending and was she a typical maligator when you got her was a lot of biting still or oh yeah oh yeah she she was very unpredictable like the look in her face just i was like hmm i can't even tell what you're thinking what you she was very yeah i it i was a little bit even kind of unsure myself like i couldn't read her you know right so but definitely in a german shepherd yeah yeah very different very yeah very driven but introducing the games you really see the you really see the change the the sparks in their eyes you see the the joy you see the connection and it all just works beautifully from there it's magical magical that's brilliant that's brilliant so now when did you start like you teach tricks to all your dogs right yes ma'am and so so that is also part of that connection right so when it was when did you start introducing tricks to her and when did you say i see her now do what she's doing saying when are we training let's go i want to do this so originally i started with tricks um with tabby with the german shepherd um as a way to help her gain some confidence as well besides you know working on loosely walking and obedience that really helped her come out of her kind of insecurities and come out of her i don't know how to say it that helped her become a little more confident dog and build connection with me and i really didn't know what i was doing at first to be honest i just kind of you know tried this tried that then i started researching i started reading books i obviously you know followed your podcast learned about shaping and uh we worked at first without the clicker just you know marker words and whatever i knew uh but then as i kind of you know got a little bit more knowledge and experience um when i brought kina in uh you know we started combining uh recallers games with trick training and it just became a model for training because you in order to teach a trick which to me any behavior we teach is a trick you go through those layers you build it in small gradual foundations so the dog gets it and the dog feels successful so you have opportunity to reward and they love it it's fun it's fun for both of you so it doesn't become a mundane kind of oh i gotta train the dog it becomes a game it becomes an experience for both of you and you both look forward to it this is a good question for you what game is your go-to in a stressful environment huh that's a good one i guess it depends on the dog for me um yeah that's a good question a good answer yeah it depends on the situation and the dog you know with

음, 키나(Kina)의 경우에는 아주 빠르고 의욕이 넘쳐서 핸드 타겟이 저희의 주력 게임이에요. 음, 수색 게임이 저희의 주력이에요. 그건 제가 아주 좋아했던 방법이기도 해요. 저희가 골프 카트에 대한 불안감을 해결하기 위해 노력할 때 그랬죠. 키나를 데려왔을 때 골프 카트를 정말 견디지 못했어요. 쫓아가고 싶어 했고 자동차도 마찬가지였는데, 자동차는 금방 괜찮아졌어요. 하지만 골프 카트는 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸죠. 해결하는 데 말이에요. 너무 역치를 넘어서서 손으로 간식을 줄 수도 없었어요. 그냥 물려고 했고, 저도 손가락이 잘릴까 봐 두려웠어요. 제 생각엔 당신의 연말 결산 영상 중 하나에서 당신이 키나를 보여주지 않았나요? 쫓아가는 게 아니라 멀리서 지켜보는 거요. 그게 사슴이었는지 잘 모르겠지만요. 네. 네 네 맞아요. 네, 맞아요. 그래서 저도 배우려고 노력했어요. 타비(Tabby)를 데려왔을 때 여러분을 더 빨리 알았더라면 좋았을 텐데 하고요. 그래서 제가 예전에 저질렀던 실수들로부터 배우려고 노력했고 그 기초를 가능한 한 빨리 쌓으려고 했어요. 키나를 데려오자마자 그런 모든 유형의 상황들을 해결해 나가면서요. 제가 알기로는 제가 아이를 노출시키고 무엇이 올바른 선택인지 보여준다면 우리는 그것을 공고히 할 수 있어요. 그리고 안 되는 것만 훈련하는 대신, 해야 할 것을 훈련할 수 있죠. 네, 해야 할 것이요. 그럼 키나를 5개월 때 데려오셨는데, 사람들이 '와, 정말 멋진 개네'라고 말하기 시작한 시점은 언제였나요? um kina the melon while she's very quick and she's very driven you know hand targets is our go-to uh search game is our go-to just to get her those are were actually my favorites also when we were working through um her insecurities with golf carts she could not stand them when i got her she wanted to chase and cars too but cars kind of faded out quickly with golf carts it was it took us quite some time to work through it she was so over threshold i couldn't even hand feed her she was you know grabbing she was i was afraid she'll take my finger off i think in one of your recolor videos um your year-end video you showed her didn't you not chasing but watching in a distance i don't know if it was the deer yeah yeah yeah yeah yes ma'am yeah it was yeah so i tried to learn you know i wish i found you guys sooner with when we got tabby so i i tried to learn from all my mistakes that i made earlier and kind of build again those foundations early on as soon as i got um keen out of you know working through all those types of scenarios that i knew you know if i expose her and i show her what good choices are we can solidify that and uh you know instead of training the knots we can train the dew live in dewland yes so you got her at five months old when at what point did people say wow this is a really cool dog instead of oh my gosh what what's wrong with your dog i mean she she's brilliant from the start you know we got we got to have that belief and attitude i yeah um even if you know when not perfect it's not perfection it's progress we're looking for but um yeah so it's it's just working daily just sharing you know what i know what i've learned um trying to pour that into her and sharing my joy with community of you know trick trainers of people and recallers i think that's that's my kind of main thing to try to spread the joy of training the dog with game-based positive reinforcement tricks to make it fun to make it engage and make silly videos definitely she is a uh like a role model that you mean you turned around this uh rescue dog who yes she was sweet you had that going for you but she still was a malinois who had all those alligator yeah he was so um you know you've done a brilliant job and i wanted people to to see how somebody who was a school teacher who was a volunteer who's a mother of three kids still can just you just swings in the layers and yeah baby steps it's it's really possible it does require effort it does require some planning right and uh dedication patience but it is
