가끔 여러분께 훈련 관련 질문을 받는 거 아시죠? 그런데 오늘 소셜 미디어에 이렇게 올렸어요. 제 개들에 대한 질문을 답해드릴까요, 아니면 훈련에 관한 질문을 답해드릴까요? 그런데 압도적으로 많은 분들이 제 개들에 대한 질문과 답을 원하시더군요. 그래서, 시작합니다. 수잔, 왜 테이터가 항상 희생양인가요? 테이터는 소셜 미디어에서 농담의 대상이 되는 경우가 많은데, 왜냐하면 테이터가 몰래 연기자 활동을 하는 것 같거든요. 옷 입히는 걸 정말 좋아해요. 항상 동물 보호소 홍보대사 같은 표정을 짓고 있거든요. 왜 항상 희생양이냐고요? 그게 바로 테이터가 원하는 모습이기 때문이죠. 테이터는 정말 엉뚱한 강아지거든요. 가장 똑똑한 강아지는 누구인가요? 많은 분들이 놀라실 수도 있겠지만, 우리 집에서 가장 똑똑한 강아지는 테이터 샐러드라고 생각해요. 테이터는 확실히 꽤 영리해요. 만약 어질리티를 하지 않으셨다면, 어떤 도그 스포츠를 하셨을 것 같나요? 어려운 질문이네요. 저는 많은 도그 스포츠를 해봤고 모두 좋아합니다. 무엇보다 어질리티를 가장 좋아해요. 컴피티션 오비디언스도 좋아했어요. 어질리티가 제 개들에게 훨씬 더 재밌긴 하지만요. 물론 컴피티션 오비디언스를 아주 재미없게 했던 건 아니에요. 즐거웠죠. 아마도 프리스타일도 좋아하지만 저는 춤추는 건 별로예요. 그래서 아마 센트 노즈 워크나, 노즈 워크 종류를 했을 것 같아요. 그걸 훈련하는 건 좋아하거든요. 강아지들은 밤에 어디서 자나요? 자고 싶은 곳에서 잡니다. 보통 스웨거는 제 침대 옆에서 자는데 킴이 오면 킴과 같이 자요. 테이터는 킴이랑 자거나 벽난로가 켜져 있으면 난로 앞에서 자요. 그리고 디스는, 솔직히 말씀드리면 제 침대에서 같이 자요. 긴 사연이 있지만 사실입니다. 모멘텀은 현관문 바로 앞쪽에서 자는 걸 좋아해요. 그리고 퓨처는 이제 여분 침실이나 여분 침실 욕실에서 잡니다. 조금 슬픈 이야기인데요. 2019년에 남편이 세상을 떠났어요. 구급차에 실려 나갈 때, 피처는 다시는 우리 침실로 돌아오지 않았어요. 예전에는 매일 밤 우리 침실에서 잤거든요. 아, 그렇군요, 조금 슬프네요. 반려견에게는 하루에 몇 번이나 먹이를 주시나요? 우리 개들은 하루에 두 번 식사를 해요. 간식도 먹고요. 자기 전 간식도 꼭 챙겨 먹죠. 반려견이 저지른 가장 장난스러운 행동은 무엇인가요? 음, 테이터는 아마 목록을 뽑아야 할 정도일 거예요. 사실 저는 잘 모르겠어요. 제 개들은 못된 짓을 안 하거든요. 제 침대에서 자는 게 어쩌면 장난일 수도 있겠지만, 하지만 장난이라는 것도 보는 사람 나름이잖아요, 그렇죠? 제 개들은 놀이 방식을 통해 규칙을 배우며 자랐거든요. 그래서 정말 나쁜 짓은 안 해요. 예를 들어 카펫이나 조리대에서 물건을 훔치지 않죠. 물건을 갈기갈기 찢지도 않고요. 아시겠지만, 스웨거가 5개월 됐을 때 화장지 한 롤을 찢어놓은 적이 있죠. 그게 아마 전부일 거예요.
You know how sometimes I ask you for training questions? Well, today I put out on social media, would you like me to answer questions about my dogs or about training? And overwhelmingly people wanted to know questions or answers about my dog. So, here goes. Susan, why is Tater always the fall guy? Tater is often the brunt of jokes on social media because I think Tater secretly is an actor. Like he loves getting dressed up. He's always got this look on his face that he's a poster child for a humane society. Why is he always a fall guy? Because like that's who he wants to be. He really is a dorky dog. Which of your dogs is the smartest? This might surprise a lot of you, but the smartest dog in this household I would have to say is Tater salad. He definitely is pretty brilliant. If you did not do agility, what dog sport would you do? That's tough. I've done a lot of dog sports and I do like them all. Definitely I love agility most of all. I loved competition obedience. Although I think agility is far more fun for my dogs. You know, not that I didn't make competition obedience a lot of fun. It was fun. Probably I love freestyle, but I don't like the dancing so much for me. So, maybe scent nose work, some sort of nose work. I do like training that. Where do your dogs sleep at night? Wherever they want. Generally, Swagger sleeps beside my bed unless Kim is here and then he sleeps with her. Tater sleeps with Kim or if there's a fire going, he sleeps in front of the fire. And this sleeps, okay, I'll be honest. She sleeps in bed with me. Long story, but that's true. Momentum likes to sleep right by the front door. And Feature now sleeps in the spare bedroom or in the spare bedroom bathroom. That's a little bit sad. In 2019, my husband passed away. And when they took him out in an ambulance, Feature has never come back in our bedroom. She used to sleep in our bedroom every night. So, that, okay, that makes me a little bit sad. How often do you feed your dogs? Our dogs get fed twice a day meals. They get snacks. Definitely they get a bedtime snack. What is the naughtiest thing your dog has ever done? Well, Tater, there's probably a list. Truthfully, I can't, my dogs don't do naughty things. Like this sleeping on my bed maybe is naughty, but naughty is in the eye of the beholder, right? Like my dogs are raised with rules being enforced in the way of games. So, they really don't do bad things. Like they don't steal things from the carp or from the counter. They don't shred things. You know, swagger when he's five months old, shred a roll of toilet paper. I guess that's probably it.

How many times a day or a week do you train? That really is dependent on how often I'm training you guys. So, I would love to train my dogs every day. And I guess technically they do get trained every day because every part of life is, there's some criteria for them. If I'm not doing like free masterclasses for people, I would say I would train at least five days a week with the young dogs that are being trained. But truthfully, everyone gets trained every day. How much have you ever paid for a dog? Oh my. Well, the last three dogs I've bred myself, you don't want to know how much it costs to do the breeding to produce this. That if you want to know truthfully how much I paid, that is like way more. Okay. Yeah. It's a lot of money. But the most I've actually paid, I haven't bought a dog in a lot of years. So, I think it was like $1,800. Do any of your dogs hate working? You might say tater hates depending on what you're doing, but you could make him like pretty much anything. But no, none of my dogs hate to work. They love to work because work is play around here, right? What is each of your dog's favorite activity? Well, tater at sunbathing for sure, or lying by the fire. He loves a car. If somebody pulls up in a car and he is loose, he will go all through a door first of all, or he'll jump in the trunk. Or if the doors in the trunk are closed, he will go through an open window. Crazy about cars. Swagger is anything to do with work. He's always got a toy in his mouth because he's always ready for work. Feature, I would say probably swimming and momentum. I don't know, it'd be running in the fields or swimming. I would say all of my dogs other than tater, their number one favorite thing is working with me. But other than working with me, it would be, Swagger would be working with anybody. Somebody drives up, a complete stranger drives up and pulls out. Working trumps anything. And then for the rest of them, this definitely hurting the other dogs is her favorite. What is the best number of dogs to own? I think that's a personal thing. For me, I think the ideal number is three, but I don't know that I'll ever have only three again. Why was your first dog a terrier? I was, I rode horses and I rode dressage and around the barn, everybody who was an English style rider, they had terriers. This was back in the eighties. Funny enough, anybody who rode Western had an Australian Shepherd. I don't know if that's still the same way, but that's how I started with terriers. And I still love terriers. And someday I'll have another one.

What has been your biggest challenge training each of your dogs? Hmm. Jeez. You forget them. Well, for me, I just, you know, probably behavior problems are the ones that I spend the most time on because I want the dogs to have, be happy. And the ones that are the most prevalent to me are the ones that I've most recently worked on. So, for this, it would be overcoming her confidence around people like men, people she doesn't know, children. Do your dogs have do claws? Yes. All of my dogs have do claws. What are three words you would never say about dogs? I don't know. I would never say anything about dominance or spite or resentment. A phrase he knows better. I would never say that. Okay. That was a fun question. What do you look for when you go to a training class? Okay. That's a good question. If you're listening to this podcast, you know the way we train. If there was a training class that trained with kindness first, and they were into shaping behaviors, and they had an understanding of behavior modification, that would be ideal. If I couldn't find that, then it would be what's closest and wouldn't mind if I did my own thing. And then I would be very protective of my dog. So, if they trained with harsh correction, I wouldn't go there because I just don't want my dogs to be around that kind of energy. And if they had like a free-for-all that the dogs were loose, I wouldn't go for that. So, if somebody asked me what would be the best class to train, I would say, you know, one of our online classes and then whatever's cheapest are in your neighborhood to just get your dog exposed, provided there isn't heavy corrections, right? Let's go and do your own thing. And as long as it's a happy atmosphere, that's the most important thing. What is your favorite quality about each of your dog? Each of your dogs. Okay. Probably swagger. It's his devotion to me. Feature. It's her, she was just an easy dog to travel with. You could take her anywhere. She, although she didn't like other male dogs, you could leave her in a hotel and she wouldn't bark. She was just, she was settled anywhere and super easy dog to travel with. It's funny enough, all the things that I love about my dogs are kind of similar. Like they all make me laugh and that's a quality I love about all of them, but they all make me laugh for different reasons. This definitely because she, she loves hard. Like she loves you, but she's very passionate about, she's in your face and licky licky. Momentum is a snuggle bug. And I love how she plays with other dogs. to love Tater. He is such a dork and such a comedic and just, you could take a hundred pictures of Tater a day and you would find something to laugh about in each one. Swagger thinks so too. Okay. Do you do jump grids to perfect jump skills? I definitely believe in doing jump grids, but I think it's more than to perfect jump skills. They just teach so much about your dog reading distances and reading height and, and yeah, there's so much. So, yes, I love jump grids. What challenge do you add first when building a skill? Handler speed or dog speed? So, Dash, right? We've talked about Dash on the podcast, D-A-S-H. So, I want the dog's drive, desire first, then I add the accuracy, then I add their speed. So, I would always get the dog's speed and then the handler speed could be a distraction. So, I would add that after the dog had their speed. How do you choose the breeder and puppy? Do you research the diseases of the line? Yes. I did a podcast about this. I think it's number 36 is how I selected this. And I talked a little bit about how I select the breeder when I'm selecting a breeder. And yes, health isn't my number one concern. What do you do when your dog is in heat? Dog periods need to be talked about more as they should. So, when my dogs are in heat, when I have an intact male, obviously I have to separate them. And I try to get them intact male like during the five or seven days that they're intently in heat, I'll get the intact male, you know, out of the house so that they don't go crazy. And generally like maybe we have an apartment on site. Sometimes I've gone over there. I've stayed in my motor home with the male or the female, or maybe just slept in the spare room. And the female has got, obviously they have their pants on that they, but yeah, that's, I think I don't do anything typical, but I don't spay my females until they're like nine years old. And the only reason I neutered Swagger is because he had a heart problem. And so, I didn't want him to be around the females in season and getting too excited. Is it true that agility dogs are fasted prior to competing? Is this something you do? That is not something I've ever heard of. And no, I have never fasted my dogs before competing. I wouldn't give them a full stomach of food. If I knew I was up early, I would maybe give them a smaller meal or get up super early to feed them two hours earlier if I was like up early in the morning. But no, I don't fast my dogs. Who is the loudest? That is a no competition. That is Tater. Tater has got the

가장 크게 짖고 가장 자주 짖거든요. 특히 집에 손님이 올 때면 더욱 그렇죠. 왜냐하면 자기가 제일 먼저 엉덩이를 긁어달라고 모두에게 알려야 하거든요. 정말 그래요. 두 분이나 누가 가장 시끄러운 개인지 물어보셨네요. 재밌지 않나요? 자, 이게 여러분의 질문들 전부입니다. 질문해 주셔서 감사합니다. 다 옮겨 적은 것 같네요. 아, 잠시만요, 하나를 빼먹었네요. 사회적 학습이나 모방이 효과가 있다고 생각하시나요? 그리고 테이토는 어떻게 만나게 되셨나요? 사회적 학습은 효과가 있다고 생각합니다. 훈련의 한 방식으로 사용해 본 적은 없지만, 개들이 서로에게서 배우는 모습을 분명히 봤거든요. 전 '개의 자신감을 빌려오는 것'에 대해 얘기한 적이 있는데, 예를 들어 제가 이걸 훈련할 때, 다른 개가 새로운 걸 배우면서 조금 불안해한다면 말이죠. 그 아이가 핫존(hot zone)에 뛰어들게 해서 스웨거가 그걸 하도록 시킬까 해요. 그리고 그저 그 아이가 재미있다는 걸 알게 하려는 거죠. 그 아이가 스웨거를 따라 한다고 생각하지는 않지만, 그저 마음을 편하게 해주고 혹시라도 무엇을 해야 한다는 부담감을 느낀다면 그 압박감에서 벗어나게 해주려고요. 우리가 어떻게 테이터를 데려오게 됐냐고요? 그에 관해 팟캐스트를 한 적이 있어요. 그래서 테이터가 어떻게 오게 됐는지에 대한 링크를 쇼 노트에 남겨둘게요. 테이터는 가정 반려견이었는데 소파 몇 개와 개인 물품 몇 가지를 먹어치웠죠. 15개월이 됐는데도 행동이 나아지지 않았고, 너무 힘이 세서 산책도 시킬 수 없었으며, 약간 골칫거리였어요. 그래서 결국 이곳으로 와서 킴의 반려견이 되었죠. 그런데 킴에게 테이터와 정말 사이가 좋지 않은 개가 있었어요. 그래서 테이터는 일주일에 4일은 킴의 개이고, 일주일에 7일은 제 개가 되었죠. 그러니까 킴과 저는 마치 제가 네 마리 반의 개를 키우고 킴이 반 마리의 개를 키우는 셈이에요. 질문해주셔서 감사합니다. 이번 시간은 여기까지입니다. 그럼 다음번에 'Shaped by Dog'에서 다시 뵙겠습니다. 감사합니다. 질문해 주셔서 감사합니다. 이번 시간은 여기까지입니다. 다음에 'Shaped by Dog'에서 다시 뵙겠습니다.

Oh, wait, here's the one I didn't get to. Do you know if social learning slash copying works? And how did Tater get to you? I believe that social learning does work. I haven't used it as a form of training, but I definitely have seen my dogs learn from each other. And I've talked about borrowing dogs' confidence. And like if I'm training this and she's teaching her something new and she's a little worried, I might have her hop it in the hot zone and get swagger to do it. And then, and just for her to see that it's fun. And I don't think she copies him, but just to put her at ease and get her away from the pressure of if she feels any pressure of doing something. How did we get Tater? We did a podcast about that. So, I'll put a link in the show notes about how Tater happened to be. He was a family pet who ate a few couches and ate a few personal items. And at 15 months, it wasn't slowing down and they couldn't walk him because he was too strong and he was a bit of a menace. And so, he ended up here as Kim's dog. And then Kim had a dog who really didn't get along with Tater. So, he's Kim's dog four days a week and he's my dog, well, seven days a week.
