Thank you for bringing this up because this is like a huge, huge misunderstanding. So I'm going to show you a little game that I play here in my... So this is a little exercise that is all about your reaction time. These lights light up either red, blue, or purple. And the goal is to touch the ones that are purple and ignore all of the rest of them. The more touches that you can get faster, the more purples are going to show up for you. I know it's touch the purple, but guess what? Occasionally, I will touch the blue or the red, which means I get an error. Even though I know which one I should be hitting. The same is true when you are teaching dogs in a system that looks to minimize any errors. What you do is you arrange the antecedents so that when the dog is first learning a new skill, the correct response is the obvious one. But they're given the choice and the freedom to choose. But they don't choose incorrectly because then we wouldn't be able to reinforce them. It's all about your antecedent arrangements, the environmental manipulation, so that the dog can be successful. As that success grows, we put in more choices. Like if this was just purple and chase the purple with nothing else distracting me, I could do that a lot easier. Add another color and it becomes a distraction. You don't add the distraction until there's enough reinforcement that you carry on the game with no distractions. But with a dog trained this way, you can add all kinds of environmental distractions. And they will occasionally make a mistake, but they go, oh my gosh, I was right. And they'll often just self-correct because they have such confidence, such clarity. That's exactly how I've been training my dog since the mid-90s. Yet my dogs have the confidence to work under the stress of a world championship and win gold medals at a world championship. So it's somebody's made up idea of what the term errorless learning means. It's like balanced training. Both of them are kind of a best word to describe the training, but they don't define the training. We have errors in our training, but the dogs, by the time they make these errors, are so confident and so full of, out of my way, I've got to get to my right choice, that the errors don't affect them in any way, shape, or form. And that creates dogs that not only can tolerate stress in their environments, they thrive in those stressful environments.
