Hello everybody. Welcome. This is our third live for the Connected Dog series and a lot of great things we're going to share today. It's about the assimilation of the information that we've been putting together, how that looks in your life, how to move forward and have success, how to move beyond where you are to get to a better place. And so I'd like to know in the comments, I'm going to pull up the chat role now. Where are you from? Oh, we're all, we've got Germany in here. We've got Ohio, Maine. I have a question for everybody. And that is, since participating in the Connected Dog series of nuance, what's the biggest change that you've noticed in your dog? So for some of you, you might've got on May 23rd. You might've got to make May 23rd when we opened the very first one. Today, we released our sixth video in the series and we have the seventh video, which I'll tell you more about later today, but I'd like to know, oh, we've got California, Finland, West Sussex, Great Britain, Georgia. Oh, hi, Natalia. I'd like to know, Netherlands, what change or what is the biggest change? So Quan Laura says his joy and desire to focus on me and work with games. That's beautiful. And you, I believe in if you've only been able to take action on some of these games one time that you should see change in your dogs. Okay. Sally said, my dogs are pretty brilliant. Thanks to you, Sally's in our programs, but I know that I have improved my mechanics, which I know that means you're going to see a change. Wendy says, calmer, more self-control. I'm noticing more of the places I'm not giving enough gap. Ooh, I like that. Evaluation gap is everything, right? This was a bit of a trick question and I'm going to tell you why in a second, but I want to read what you guys are saying. I've noticed that if I give my dog the gap time, she responds well, coming from South Carolina, USA. Beautiful. More clarity, Dorota says, here's what was Ontario. Okay. So here's one agility bit says I've been working really hard on the training, but I'm not seeing any real improvement yet. That's super important to acknowledge because remember, just getting in our boom, boom, boom, boom. Who's getting your handouts? Because remember that if, if I'm, if I'm not getting a, and this is why this, this question was a bit of a trick question, because if you're not seeing any improvement, I know if I practice the, the games and the conditioning exercises that I've laid out, if I practice them with my seasoned dogs, like the dogs

who know these games, like the back of their hands, if I practice those games with them, I would still see an improvement with them. But if I didn't see an improvement, what I would do is I would look at my videos and say, what is responsible for a dog, the dog's behavior to get better. As I mentioned in our very first live, 50% is the mechanics. Now the lesson plans, I think if you've been printing out the lesson plans and using these lists, lesson plans, hearts for Sharon and her lesson plans that you, you absolutely, your mechanics should be spot on, but I'm going to look for glitches in my mechanics, because if you are not seeing an improvement in your dog, then I would look, has, have your mechanics changed at all since the beginning of this? If your mechanics have changed and you're not seeing an improvement, then what is the other part of the equation? The value of the reinforcement. So there's ways, it's all science. You know, I've basically been masking the application of the science for you, because if I said, I'm doing a live, I'm doing a series, it's all going to be about the textbook science and the equations. Now, some of you geeks out there that love behavior, you would have showed up. But for the rest of us, we love playing, we love games, we love something that could be fun. Yes, we all love learning. What is going on with this here today? We all love learning, but I've just, just, I've, I've disguised the science, but what we, what you're doing is just science. So there is a formula. If you're not seeing an improvement, it comes to you. Okay. So let's say, this is beautiful. Sue says my dogs are more tuned in and focus on me. Oh, this is beautiful too. Sofa. I started to believe that I can do it when my puppy arrives, arrived that. So when, so I take it that sofa doesn't have a puppy yet, but she's now believing more in herself. That's huge. That's huge. Biggest change, more attention to me. Awesome. Change in the increase in speed of response. That's beautiful. Right. So Donna said that my biggest change is my change in my understanding, the importance of the gap. So when, and several of you have said the gap, I love that because the learning happens in the gaps, right? That's why we have those gaps. They're evaluations of what our dogs know. Um, and another one I've not seen change. He was already well behaved around food, but for me, but for me was a good learning for my behavior. Okay. So I would, Jack, I would, Jacques, I would take up my challenge. Are you video you in your training? Because my dog already well behaved around food.

That's not what we were teaching today. That was a, or this week, it was a small part of what I was sharing. Does your dog have more drive, more joy? Are there, are they excited about doing these sessions with you? If not, let's go back and look at the formula that what contributes to behavior, what part isn't as good as it could be? Because Jacques, I know it could improve even in my own dogs. If I dedicated to those few behaviors this week, I would see improvement in any of my dogs. And that's not to say my dogs aren't brilliant, but everything can get marginally better. Um, I love this excitement to start the sessions. That's awesome. Thank you for this foot feedback. Video six was amazing. I love watching you work in real life. It reinforces me. Bondi is two years today. Happy birthday, Bondi. Thank you. He has been raised in me colors. Okay. Before I go any further, I love these comments. I'm going to tell you, we're going to give away a couple of prizes. First of all, I'm going to give away our share prize from our last live and ha or excuse me, not a share price, our gem winner. So our gem is if there's anything, and I count, I count on the fact that I will be giving you huge value, big aha moments in this live in the next, uh, whatever time we have left here. Um, 51 minutes. So what, what is the big aha? And you're going to save that up, write it in your notes, write it for yourself, because at the end of this week, you should be putting all those in your dog training journal. Here are the big takeaways that I learned with this series. And so yesterday or in our last live, I said, collect your lives and collect your, your gems and I'll share, and I'll, I'll share with you how you can win. This is how this was our last winner from last week. And it's a long one, but a really good one from, uh, Vicki Radford Russell. One of the most enlightening aspects, I'm going to put this back on and make sure that you can hear me. Oh, I've made it black. I made it black so that, um, but maybe you can't hear me if it's black. So that's okay. Um, my gem was, was discovered after watching Susan's demonstration with this. And that was the demonstration that we have pulled out and put it on our Facebook page and our Instagram page with the target stick, really good demonstration. You please watch that one. We'll learn a lot from that. Um, actually no, that was, so it was a demonstration I did with this, but actually I got my demonstrations mixed up, but that was still a good one. So what she said is she was quoting me when I said my dog's

attention. I did a bunch of behaviors without any food in my hands, without any toys, with nothing. I did a bunch of behaviors and this just kept her focused. Her attention was where I asked her to do, whether I asked her to, um, look at a magic marker on the floor or look at a, a fitness, uh, ops object on the floor. So, um, what I said was my dog's attention for me has nothing to do with contrived focus. I don't tell her watch me or watch that I direct her where she should watch if it's something that isn't me. So she knows where the work is, but that's it. So beautiful to watch. The food is the fuel, but not the focus for the work. The dog decides where the focus has to be to work, but it was the part in our platinum level call where Carmen talked about believing in ourselves and how our whole dog, the dogs, that team and community believes in us that brought me to tears. So our platinum community, I think, what day is it today? You can still join in our platinum community and you can find out how to become a member of that in the learning zone of the connected dog. So, and that's the truth. And I want to talk more about this today. Cause it's so important. The, the, the belief circle that has to happen for you to progress your dog training. When I see someone shaking their head at my training or making jokes that I need to show the dogs who who's boss, that's when I need to be stronger, stand a little taller, lift my chin and believe in myself. I think this is just such an important point for anybody who owns a dog, because sometimes it may feel like you're training in a vacuum, especially if you're in an environment where this type of training isn't prevalent. And so you will be ridiculed. You people will tell you why you're going to fail and you have to know there's tens of thousands of people that have had succeeded with this. You will succeed. Uh, and it's, it's the circle of belief that has to be closed for you to get that success. All right. So that was beautiful. And thank you for that. Um, gem and let's go, I want to go back to the, to the question that I had for you guys. Okay. So the question is what was the biggest change you guys have seen in your dogs? Okay. Um, more keen to train. So the biggie was that I've seen is more keen to train, more focus, more excitement. Um, Donna says, what if my dog had a food allergy and told to use kibble? What if your puppy had a food allergy and told to use kibble? Number one, I wouldn't use kibble that doesn't align with my core values in life. But if my dog has a food allergy,

then I would take the things my dog can use and make, turn them into the highest value rewards. Um, big change in my blue healer. I would love to hear more about that. More clarity and better mechanics because you guys realize the importance of those mechanics. I love, love, love that. Okay. I'm going to share with you right now. One of my favorite toys that I use with my dog. I love this. I mean, I love all my toys from, for my morals, but this one is one of my favorite. And, um, um, why I love it. It's a softball. So if you've got like maybe a great big, big, you know, XL kind of a dog, you don't want a little ball like this, but for a puppy, this is brilliant for my border collies. This is brilliant. I love, love, love this toy. It's got a little bit of fleece, but it's got a bungee. So why am I telling you this is probably my favorite toy that I have from, for my morals. Uh, plus it's branded with three colors because I'm giving it away. And so I'm going to give this away today to, um, a winner. We're going to random do a pick, pick a random winner. Actually, let's do two. I'll do two. So I'm going to give away two of these, one at the end of today and one, um, when we go live on Saturday. So I'm going to give away both, both a gem winner and a share winner. So I'm going to give a two, two of these away. All you have to do is share this live, tell people why it's a value to you and come back in here and write in the comments that you shared. All right. And then where you shared it. So our team can contract that down and then you're going to be in the draw for the live. All right. I'm just scrolling through your comments. Um, all right. So the most important thing is what I was expecting to see is what exactly what, what you, what you guys saw is that your dogs, your dogs had more focus for what you were doing. And why was that? Because what we saw was what is called a conditioned emotional response. And the first CER you would have seen is when you played the collar grab game that your dog soon said, Hey, you know, she used to grab for my collar to pull me or push me somewhere. And now she's grabbing it to give me cookies where before they might've gone. Yeah. You're not getting my collar. Now they might go here. Here's my collar. And even though this hair is driving me crazy. And even though you may not see it just yet, you're not, you're not seeing so much of the pull away. They might not be lifting their neck up, but you're not getting the pull away. So we've got a conditioned emotional response to your hand going towards the

collar. And then we added, um, value for the hand in the target game. So that was a double whammy. Now your dog should go, Hey, something good about that hand. The hand has a conditioned emotional response for that dog. It wasn't something that we, um, trained conditioning means it happens because of pleasant consequences that occurred. Um, after the hand got extended towards your dog. Now, if you're not seeing that, then probably you've got to look at, is there a gap between when you're grabbing and when you're delivering, is there a gap between when you present your hand and how they get the cookie? So look at that. So that is really, that's, that's part of the science that we disguise as just having fun with your dog that led to a place where you were all getting, um, the results I was hoping you were going to see. Now, if you think about a high level Olympic athlete, but they're not getting the results, they're not improving. What are they going to look at? They are going to look at how they're training. They're going to look at the environment that they're training in. Is it an environment that sets them up to be successful? So if you were an Olympic athlete and you were training an environment where maybe, um, you, you, you need to train, but the, the temperature is so hot, you can't get many reps in or, and so you're not going to have success with your training. The environment is dictating that, or you're training in an environment where you walk in and everyone just points at you and laughs at you and tells you you're a loser and you're never, you have to fight that. Potentially you could say, oh, I'm an athlete. I can rise above it, but is that going to be as empowering for you? So number one, if you aren't seeing the results, you've got to look at, have you set up that training den that we encourage you to so that you've minimized the distraction. So if your dog isn't showing you greater focus, it could be the environment is not set up the way we suggested that you set it up. Okay. Um, so environment is big. Your mechanics is big. Those are the things that we mentioned that play a role in whether these games will be successful for you or not. Um, so Tammy said, this is why I feel like I'm not having success in the current obedience environment that I'm in. Okay. I just want to send everybody out a heart who is struggling because of the environment that maybe there isn't other choices for you right now. I'm going to tell you a story. I'm not going to tell you the state I was in, but back in, not, not that I was

drunk or anything. I meant the U S state. Just clarify that one right off the top. Back in 1996, I was teaching a seminar and it was a very hot area of the USA for competition obedience. They were like a lot of the best dogs came out of this area. And I went in, there was more than 100 people at this seminar. It was on competition obedience. And I was excelling at competition obedience at the time. I did obedience, agility, and fly ball were my three sports. And the first thing I said to them is that they couldn't participate with prong collars. And so, uh, and then I shared about how I don't believe that we need physical corrections. And I didn't, I didn't have the insight to, to teaching our concepts the way I do now. So to be able to say that our dog, you know, the belief I have is that our dogs are always doing the best they can with the education we've given them in that environment, we put them in. Therefore, if they make a mistake, if they aren't giving you attention, I don't believe we have the right to correct them. So my point is I started out with that seminar with between 110 and 120 people in the room. And by Sunday afternoon, I would guess on the outside, there might've been 25 people left because they thought I was absolutely delusional. They were 100% convinced their beliefs about what dogs need to train were 100% correct. And they were not going to sit for, for me telling them about this make believe world where dogs are doing their best. Well, you've never had X breed fill in the blank. You've never tried to get this X do that. And they have to, to justify what they're doing. Nobody wants to intentionally do something that would be deemed as unkind if they didn't feel that the dog deserves it. So if you are going to a classroom right now and you're trying to do some of the things that I'm suggesting, then you've got to know if you are in an area where this isn't the standard, you will be ridiculed. And guess what? I know of all the lessons we shared this week, if you get just 10% of it, correct, you're still going to see an improvement in your dog. It will be a slower improvement, but if you do the things that we've outlined in these amazing, uh, plan plans that Sharon has put together, if you do those step-by-step things, then you're step-by-step, um, dog training mechanics that, that 10% right is going to go to 15%, right? It's going to go to 20%, right? Cause your mechanics are going to get better and better and better. You've got to be able to say, I might not be getting the results

they're getting right now. And this is tough. If you've got like a litter mate and the litter mate's doing it this way, and you're choosing to do it this way. I may not be getting the results they are getting right now, but I'm achieving the relationship that I know I want with my dog. My moral compass is aligned in the direction that I want to go with my dog. Right. And I think that that, that, you know, that, and you'll know in your heart that that will take you to a better place. So I started like many people in the world of competition obedience. I trained with a prong collar. I've never trained with an electric collar, but I've trained with a prong collar. I've trained with a choke chain. I started back in the eighties where that's what we were taught. And, but that, that isn't necessary. It's just not necessary. Okay. All right. I'm going to get to, I'm going to just jump into a couple of your questions right now. And I just want to remind you that Sunday night at midnight will be the last time that the connected dog videos will be available. We're going to be putting them into our recallers program in the next couple of weeks. So they will be there for our members. But we're putting, we put this together so that we could help share this information with everybody. And on Monday, for those of you who say, Hey, I would like to, I would like to know more about this recallers. There'll be an opportunity for you to learn more about that on Monday. All right. Questions, questions, questions, questions. We had some great questions, but if you have questions, then you can leave them in the comments. Jo just said, not surprising to me after training horses with the same kind of choice, believe it or not, before I trained dogs, I did train horses. And so that my history is the very same. Horses, let's not even go there because no, they don't need it either. So LOH behind the scenes said, this is my comment of the day from Sheila. And let's see if we can get Sheila some Be Kind stickers. So where are the Be Kind stickers? Oh, I covered them up. So let's get Sheila a Be Kind sticker. Three, let's send her out three Be Kind stickers. Comment of the day. My level of understanding is growing. And as a result, so is my dogs. She, so her dog's level of understanding. She's got some clarity and has been making great choices. We've both got a spring to our step. It gives us further clarity for some of our recaller games and how to keep growing them. Whoop from Sheila. Right. So more folk, more drive. Like that's the order of things, the order of assimilation. We want

the dog to go from a place of, well, what are you doing over there to, Hey, what are we doing? And then when you get that, then you can start growing behavior. So we get the dog wanting in, we get joy first, then we get understanding because understanding without joy, that's not worth it. That's old school. All right. Questions. Where'd my questions go? Questions today. I make my dog wait for their food. Oh, I make my dogs wait for their food after I put it down and release them with, okay. Or yes, should I use chow now? Yes. So once we've taught our dogs that cookies in the bowl and then we'll require the word chow to, to be able for you to eat them then, and you want to go to a place where the cue search is something that is discriminately different than the cue chow, you, you would now, when you're putting your dog food down, say chow. And that's what I do with my dogs. Okay. Andy said, I noticed Susan gave hop it up when he came off the bed and sniffed the ground. That was in, I think it was in video five and I was training, um, totem. I noticed Susan gave hop it up when he came off the bed and sniffed the ground. So instead of letting our dog sniff, it seems like we redirect them immediately to a hot zone. Okay. Andy, I love that you asked this question. Thank you. The answer is it depends. Okay. Next question. Just kidding. So if I was training a puppy and they, in the midst of training, like a puppy that, you know, I, I haven't really got a relationship with, and I'm teaching them new things and they started sniffing the floor. And what I would do is I would guide them back to their crate. I would throw them in their crate, like not physically throw them. I would put them, you know, put them back in the crate. I would toss them some cookies so that they could investigate those cookies. Then I would do two things. Number one, I would get a vacuum out and clean up any crumbs that are on that floor. Cause remember we want to create an environment of success for dogs. If there's crumbs on the floor and we've got a dog who barely has that history of joy with us, that doesn't have the conditioned emotional responses, um, in the games that we're going to play yet, then I want to make that, that, um, training environment as sterile as possible. And we go from sterile to dirty with, with, with, um, success and understanding, right? So originally, if my puppy sniffs, that tells me it's not a sterile environment, I need to get better for this puppy. The next thing I would do, I said, there were two things I would do. The second thing I would do is I would, um, turn off my video.

I'd probably turn off my video before I vacuum. I would look at my video and see, was I connected and engaged with that puppy through the training or did that puppy, puppy sniff, not because there was something to sniff, but because the puppy got stressed and that was just a, a, um, a stress relieving behavior for the puppy. All right. So I want to know those two things. And my video will say, well, tell me, well, yeah, you actually disconnected and you, so if I'm going to stop my training with, with any dog, I'm either, I might ask them to hop it up. Um, I might get them to tug while I regroup, or I might put them in the kennel and throw them with a bunch of cookies. So if my puppy sniffed and I put them in the kennel, I'm giving them a handful of cookies and you can say, you just rewarded them for sniffing. Maybe I did, but I don't care because that's a puppy who I have no right to say you shouldn't be sniffing because I haven't helped build the joy for what I'm doing. So snipping because becomes an option they don't want to choose. All right. So that's a brand new puppy or a rescue dog. That's new to me that we don't have that kind of rapport and my, my choice. And as the dog's experiences grow and I'm at a place where I played a lot of it's your choice and I can train with my food bowls on the ground and it isn't a distraction. My dog looks at those food bowls as white noise. Then if my puppy, um, sniffs a spot, then what I would do is I would ask them to hop it up and I may bring them right back. Like I did with totem, or I might fill another bowl and put it on that spot. And that goes back to something I learned from my mentor, uh, Dr. Bob Bailey. Sometimes when behavior is easy, it's easy for the dog. It's easier for the dog to do it incorrectly. If it's just too easy, there's enough criteria. So if the essence of food is a distraction to you, then what about an entire bowl of smelly food? Oh yeah. Right. Was I sniffing? Oh gee, I didn't even, because the, the sniffing behavior, it just maybe just happened because I'm a Basset hound and the smell is close to my nose. So then, but in both cases, I would review the video and I would make sure what are my, what was my mechanics? What was my engagement? What was my environment? There's a lot of things. And that's why Andy, this is a brilliant question. And my answer still is, it depends, depends on the experience. But the one thing that is common with all of this is I would, I would definitely stop the reinforcement from, from scenting. And I would definitely first turn the microscope on myself.

How did I fail that dog or that puppy in that training session? And how can I get better for them? Okay. Does that make sense? Or does that blow your mind? And let me say, if I was training profit and he suddenly in the midst of training, sniff the ground, I would take a handful of cookies from my bait bag and I would just put them all on the, on the ground. But if the little scent essence of where something once was is a little distraction, what about a handful of cookies, a pile of cookies there? Oh, oh yeah. Oh, I shouldn't be doing that. Right. If it's too easy, sometimes it's, it's, um, insignificant to the dog. If it's too easy to be a success, sometimes it's just insignificant. I drove, uh, uh, 1500 kilometers. I, when I say I drove my late husband drove, um, because I had a question for Bob Bailey and I drove to his home when we were in LA to get the answer. And that was the answer. Sometimes when a behavior is too easy, it's also easy to, to just not do it. Okay. Um, all right. I should have a pen here to mark off what I've talked about. And, um, I should check the comments and see if that makes, if that does that make sense to you guys? Are you, are you getting, you're picking up what I'm putting down here? Um, Um, I'm going to take a little sip of coffee here. Okay. My sister gets frustrated with one of my puppies who gets into my, into things and steals her dog food. She tells her, sit, sit, sit. No, no, no. How can I redirect or help my puppy in this training? Kimberly, the question I'm going to ask, have you set up an environment of success for that puppy? What, what do you think? I don't want to put words in your mouth. So I'm just going to let you think that one through and figure out that if there's opportunities for a puppy who hasn't been empowered with the tools to make good choices and they make a, an incorrect choice. I can't remember what I was doing when I was training. Uh, oh, it was on our platinum call and I was training, um, my dog and she made an incorrect choice twice. And I said, I believe her. We're not there. I thought we were there. We're not there. I believe you. I'm not doing that to you again. I'm going to make one small tweak. And she was like, why don't you say that in the first place? So I would not, I would not set my puppy up to, to make the same choice, AKA fail because, um, a there's reinforcement value in that B I want a great relationship with my sister. So I'm not gonna let my puppy get into her things. Okay. Um, all right. Susan. Yeah. Selena, I'm just going to give you this short version.

How do you help someone who feels overwhelmed with all this new knowledge? Oh, that's from Selena. Is that from Selena? So Selena said, how can I not feel so overwhelmed with all this knowledge? I love that. Oh, I mean, I, I guess I could jump up and down because what you're feeling Selena is the pain of change yesterday or the day before the, uh, connected dogs season of nuance started, you were in your happy place. I don't want to say a place of ignorance, but I might call it that because all of this was not known to you. And I'm not saying you are ignorant. I'm saying you are in a place of ignorance. All right. We're all just a, um, uh, uh, an assembly of our own experiences in the world of dog training. And now this crazy Canadian with hair, that's never the same two days in a row comes and says my 35 years at a world championship level of dog training without the use of physical corrections or verbal corrections or blame or judgment of my dogs has brought me this success. And not only that has brought me this success, that this level of success for my, you know, tens of thousands of students. So now you're like, wait a minute, this is what I knew about dog training. And now you've put me into a place of pain and it's painful because it's different. And we have to go what they call outside of our comfort zone. So we either have the pain of the relationship we had with our dogs, where we said they were wrong and no, or the pain of all this new information coming into our life. Here's, here's important thing. It all comes back to how you identify yourself. If I identified myself as some people have said some beautiful things about me, like what was the one that just came in recently? I am the Tom Brady of dog training. Some people have said beautiful things about, I do not identify myself as the best dog trainer in the world. Some people will say Susan is the best. I identify myself as a lifetime learner because that will always have me look for what are, what are other ways that I can have the best relationship possible with my dogs? What are other ways that I can help my dogs live their best life? How can I help a student who has breed X, who's in their sixth home? If I was the best dog trainer in the world, I would know the answers and I wouldn't have to look any further, but if I'm a lifelong learner, I'm constantly craving how to be better for the dogs that I love and the students that I want to excel. And so that's what you're feeling. The overwhelm is just coming from a place of change and the lens that you're looking through

the life. So if you just let go and know that when we feel overwhelmed, chances are we are looking at a goal that we have and how difficult the path to achieving that goal might seem right now. But I promise you, if you were in our Recallers program a year from now, you would be here supporting people on this live that you will see some of our students that we have never asked anybody to jump on a live and tell people how their life has changed. But that is just the essence of the community that we are. That we are all trying to do the same things basically. All right? So overwhelm means you are focused on the wrong thing. You are not being present to your dog and what is within your control. So what's within your control? Number one, establishing the environment for your dog to train in. Number two, you've got these amazing lesson plans. And so that means that you can make tomorrow better than today. That's what you focus on. And then you don't feel overwhelmed. You feel inspired. Thank you for that comment because I love it. It doesn't matter what you're feeling. Your feelings are valid because I don't come from the same past you do. So your feelings are 100% valid and know that you shouldn't feel one ounce of shame for what you might be feeling with what you have done or what you are wanting to do next. Okay. So I have a new person that's asking an interesting question. Okay. It will make you explain a long time, but I think it's a huge ding ding for me. Okay. Because they're seeing, but they don't understand what they're seeing. Okay. This is from Kathy. How is teaching a dog to stay different from cook? I'm not understanding. That's what she's seeing. Oh, okay. So Kathy is seeing that her dog is, when you're saying cook, the dog's staying in the same place until you release them because cook means you can't move. Absolutely. That is the game within the game. How I remember when we had Sarah come and visit us with her little puppy and she was working, sit down, stay, come with this 14 week old rescue puppy that she's had for three weeks. And I'm like, if I was that puppy, I would just want to like throw myself on a sword. How boring is that? But the truth is that is what the vast majority of puppies are going through or dogs are going through in typical puppy classes. I am teaching your dog. I'm teaching you how to teach your dog to stay, but I'm doing it within a game we call cook. I'm teaching how to create a gap and grow a gap that traditional dog trainers will call that's the stay. But we're doing it in a way that it's a game

within a game and yeah, we achieve the same or better results because the dogs are on the top of their ear. The heads are on top of the dog's ears. They're not afraid of not staying. They are just knowing that, oh yeah, this is the game. Game is this. I remember when back in the nineties, when I was working with a traditional dog trainer who was brilliant at the sport of dog obedience. And what I would do is I loved, I wanted to learn from her how to do the handling portion. And she would say, this is the skill we need. And I would go back and I would use shaping and games to get that. And it was sometime into our relationship when she wanted me to do something, an ear pinch where you pinch the dog's ear until they do. And I said, no, that's not really how I train my dogs. And she said, well, of course it is. You've been with me for more than a year. And I said, this is what I do. And she said, what if you were dumbbell, the retrieve obstacle? What if you threw your dog to retrieve something and it landed in a pool of urine and your, how would your dog retrieve it then? And I said, number one, if there was a pool of urine in the obedience ring, I would think the judge would ask for a cleanup. That's just me. But number two, if retrieving from a pool of urine, if sticking your head into a pool of urine and getting that dumbbell out was part of the requirement, I could probably teach it better than you could. Because at some point, a dog will just give up when you're creating pain. And I would have a dog because of the way that I train that would run through a brick wall for me. Okay. So it is the same. That's a great, great comment, Kathy. It's the same, but it's disguised as something that we call fun. And I think when it's fun, the dog is, as you guys have seen, the dogs are more engaged and they want to do more of this. Plus you are more engaged. Therefore you as my student, and guess what? We now, let me just double check here. I'm going to double check. In this Connected Dog series this year, we continue to get more and more students. We have 43,813 students in the Connected Dog and they're seeing the same thing. They are enjoying this. They are enjoying playing these games. Therefore, will they do more of them or less of them? Hmm. That's how reinforcement works. It's fun for you. Okay. Crazy hair alert. It's fun for you. So you're going to do more of it. And who benefits then? Number one, the dog benefits because they're having fun with you and that's what they crave. They're social beings. Number two, you benefit because yeah, you're getting out and having fun with

your dog, but you end up with a dog who's got more focus for you and more focus for work. Win, win, win. Okay. From Susie, like your name, Susie. How do I progress? It's your choice to the outside world, of food found on walks. Is my plan of action. I take a bowl or a plate from outside learning and progressively move it to outside of the doorway footpath. So it's not that you take the, you, you grow the environment that you're playing it in. You grow the layers. So only now I'm going to, I'm not going to give away the punchline. When do we know that we can, we can grow the layers of, it's your choice. You leave me a comment. When do we know that we're ready to try? So can you train in your training den with bowls of food on the ground, highest value food on the ground, and your dog doesn't even look at it. Can you train, can you train with then piles of food on the ground and, and nobody's going to, to look at it. Can you train with then can you grow from outside of your training den to the kitchen, to the living room and you just keep growing that. So, so when the dog, when the dog is confident, when the dog is confident and relaxed at the current level, love that answer. When the dog is relaxed in the layers below you guys are like, you get, you get a pluses as students. Brilliant, brilliant answer. Our dog's temp is good at playing every layer. And so what's going to happen is my hallucination is you won't have to go to bringing bowls on the path because the behavior is generalized to all environments. It does it. And, and here's what you're, what you're going to have to do is you're going to have to go back and go into the training den one day and just put one cookie on the floor because yeah, I can ignore a pile of cookies, but one cookie, oh, that's different. So you, you know, there's, there's all different layers and, and that's, that's where we're creating what I call environmental neutrality. If you were training in a bathroom with nothing but a toilet in there, it would be easier for your dog to have success than if you were training at a dog park. Somewhere between the empty toilet and the dog park is, is where your environment gets too distracting for the dog. So for some of you, it might be when you're in the bathrooms, you're not leaving the bathroom and you just keep growing those environments until you can take that dog anywhere. Um, okay. I've learned we don't want our dogs to lick up crumbs after we play it's your choice or sniff table edges after our bowl is removed, but if they do that's information, but what do I do with that

information? How do I determine how far back to build clarity? So I think we just answered it. You guys gave great, great answers. Oh, this is a, this was, I think a question. Um, I saw Susan give Tilly food off her plate. My jaw dropped. I was always taught that was a no, no, but it makes sense. Once you see the nuances, I don't feed my dogs off my plate. That was a demo I did in. And I remember thinking people are going to think it's okay to feed off the plate. I, I don't because I don't want my dogs to think that's a source of food for them because dogs look at bait bags as a source of food. So, um, if I did that to reward a good choice, I'm okay with it. But if I sat down with plates and my dogs all followed me, that's not the goal. I want my dog to see a plate and go, oh, that's her food. Okay. We're not training today. I'll just go back and lie down. That's what I want. Okay. Thank you for bringing that up. That's, that's an important one. Okay. Um, so Marcy brilliant layers, the nuances that we learned that we, in the, in the series this week, it was about the importance of using location specific reinforcement markers and how that contribute to a positive conditioned emotional responses in the dogs. And that's what we wanted from collar grab hand target and even the training, Dan. And then some of you have already seen my dog has more focus for me because you've created that positive emotional response by playing all these games. And I think some of you have highlighted that you now understand the importance of two really things. important things. Number one, how much you need to improve your mechanics in order to get better behavior from the dog and to evaluate for the gap in all of your training. Is there understanding your, it's an evaluation of what your dog knows when you're growing that gap? All right. And that's where, um, we're growing behavior comes, comes in that we want that understanding. And some of you are saying, I saw somebody saying, well, what about the breed of dog? Well, what about the distraction? I'm going to just share with you, um, a couple of our past students that started in a place where they, they were overwhelmed that they didn't think anything was possible. So I'm going to, first one I'm going to show you is Louie, the Cocker Spaniel. Louie always makes us laugh and you will see for obvious reasons. So I'm going to be quiet and watch you. When Louie started in the place that you're in now, this is what Louie looked like. So can any of you relate to poor Katie and her dog Louie? I've seen that video a dozens of times

and it still makes me laugh. I love a dog with spirit and character. I just love that. And I, and let's face it, all dogs have spirit and character if we allow them to have it. Now let's, can we grow that? Now you can see one little clip that Katie did want to do agility with Louie, but Louie would like do a couple of things and then just go exit stage. Right. I see something more valuable than what you're asking me to do over, over, over. Right. And so here is Louie's. Louie. So life had become games, not just with Louie, but with the whole family. So it doesn't matter how, and if you think, I'm going to, I'm going to just show you a little video of belief when she was five months old, she was playing. This is just real life playing with tater salad in our house. And they, and I'm like, Oh yeah, she looks like she's having a great old home. Actually, she was less than, I think she was only four months old here. And I thought I'm going to test the recall, see what we get. Good baby. Good girl. So, so good. Go play. So what was the reinforcement for belief in that, in that, um, in that little video? I love every second of Louie's videos. So why? So the reinforcement was the treat. What, what was the reinforcement when I was, um, because this is important playing with tater. Yeah. So, so people will say my dog won't stop chasing wildlife. My dog won't stop chasing the cat because the cookie I have isn't as valuable. I don't believe coming to me and getting a cookie is as valuable as playing with tater. I don't, and so with, with, I wish I, I, maybe for Saturday, I'll find the video of belief in her obsession with bunnies. We have so many bunnies around this property. So how do I get her to not chase bunnies? Because I don't, I can't use chasing bunnies as a reinforcement. Like I can coming when called, when you're playing with tater salad, but you just work at the stage you've got. And we start to generalize. When I say this, you do that. When I say this, when I do that, we set up an environment that is successful as we grow environmental neutrality. Okay. Why did I use a treat also? Because super, that was a great question. I want the value of going to play to go through me. So if I didn't have a treat, I would have asked for a hand target and then said, go play. I gave her a treat. So now I'm connecting with her and I could have asked her to down or spin or something else. And then I want to get that transfer of value. What else was I doing? I was growing the gap between coming to me

and getting the best reinforcement possible for coming to me. So it's all a game within a game. All right. Correct. Premack. It's powerful. All right. So some of you, when you look at some of the dogs, I'm going to show you, I think I've showed, have I showed you guys, Clara? And you might be in a position. And I always love that people say, oh, Susan just has border collies. I don't just have border collies. And my students don't just have border collies. This will work for everybody. And what it depends on, I talked about the belief loop. Part of the belief is, and this isn't the belief loop that I've talked about on my podcast. It's like, let's think of it as a circle that we're filling. So part of it, you're going to fill with the belief you have in me as a coach. Do you believe that I could coach you to help overcome your problem with your dog trainer? Do you believe I have enough experience in the world of reinforcement-based and game-based dog training that I could help you be successful with your dog? No matter what, if I, if I've said, I'm knocking on your door every morning and we're going to do a little bit of training and could I, so that's, we're filling up our circle. So I've, by you saying, yes, I believe in you, Susan, and your abilities to coach people that fills up a part of the circle. Now, the next thing you have to say, looking at where your dog is right now and the challenges that you have, maybe your dog has some reactivity. Maybe your dog has some, um, obsessions with chasing kids on bicycles, wildlife, whatever it is. Do you believe it's possible for your dog to change? Do you believe you could see your dog overcoming the struggle that you have right now? Because that is going to fill up the next part of my belief circle. So do you believe that is possible? So Gail says, yes. Now, some of you, like, if you look at, I'm going to show you, uh, Clara, I'm going to, and I think I've showed this video before. Like, do you believe that this is possible? I'm going to show you a quick little clip. Like, would you believe it's possible to overcome that with a dog who's that obsessed about cats that she can't walk down the street? And, and Clara lived in a, uh, a town where there's all these feral cats and life was like H E double teeth, toothpicks for her because of all those cats. It would be really difficult for her to believe, but she, she believed enough in me as a coach. She believed in her dog. She believed in the program that I was offering her. And, and I'll tell you what

the final element of the belief is, but I'm going to show you what Clara and Jesse were able to accomplish. So if, for some of you, it might be hard to believe that I would, and I tell you a little story. I was teaching in Japan and I could have showed videos of Clara. Um, but Clara and I didn't know each other back then. This was in the nineties. And I showed a video of my dog, Buzz, who was very, very high wrote the book shaping success about Buzzy. Um, the book one dog training book of the year by the dog writers association of America back in 2005. And, um, so I showed videos of Buzz being frantic and crazy and barking and high and, and me getting him to do this and that and this and that and boom and boom and boom. These people, people paid, um, a lot of money to be at this five day workshop, thousands of dollars. After the first morning she packed up and she said to the translator, she was going home and she wasn't coming back. Translator said, why she said, because this woman is a fraud. And I remember when the translator said this to me, like, like all the blood ran from my face and I'm like, why am I feeling this way? I'm not a fraud. I know what I'm telling the rooms, the truth. But the woman said, nobody in this classroom has a dog like the one she showed on that video. That's very, very high. That's frantic that can't control themselves, but I do. And I know it is not possible to achieve what she said she's achieved without the use of an electric collar. There is no way she would get that kind of control from that dog without an electric collar. She, there was in her belief circle, there was no room for the belief that a program could achieve results with a dog of a certain temperament without the use of extreme force. And when that, when that circle isn't whole, then it's going to be a challenge to move forward with the training that I'm suggesting. And so the, the final part of that circle, and the one that is for many people, the hardest to believe is the belief that you have in yourself. You've already said, if I knocked on your door every morning, it would probably be like a five 30 wake up call because I I'm on the road at four 30. So if I would knocked on your door and I trained your dog, you would believe that in a year from now, that your dog would be a changed dog and you would see amazing difference. And you've also proven to yourself by saying this works. I've seen my dogs, um, focus for me improve. I've seen my dog drive. I've seen clarity. So you, you know that the program works. So we've, we've got a little bit of our dog

is, is, is filled our belief circle. We've got a little bit of, um, or Susan Garrett has filled the circle and our dog has filled the circle. Now the lesson plans that I've given you, if I was to give you a lesson plan every day for the next two months. Yeah. Okay. My circle's getting pretty big, but the most important in it, in it, for some of you, the circle might already be this full, so it's not much, but for, so, so it, the, the ending of it is the belief you have in yourself. I don't believe I have what it takes. I don't believe I have the time. I don't believe I have the follow through. I don't believe I have what it takes. And so there's, that's where one of our coaches, um, in a platinum call the other day quoted me and she said, and this is the truth, our coaches, because we've seen the thing happen over and over and over and over with people who said they were overwhelmed with people who thought that that wouldn't be possible because we've seen that magically happen. We have belief enough for you. So that's what I'm saying. If you've just kind of looked at the connected dog right now, but you've not, because your belief wasn't there, you've not really dove in, you have until Monday. So I encourage you download these amazing lesson plans, go through what those videos, go through them more than once, write notes in the 63 page playbook. I don't know how many pages it is. I shouldn't make numbers up like that. 53. I wasn't far off 53 page playbook because that is how you are going to be in a better place. And when, when I go back to, you know, that pain of overwhelm. So right now there is a level of pain based on the challenges that you're seeing with your dogs. Do you want to live with that pain for the rest of your dog's life? Or do you want to change that? But in order to change that, you've got to pick a little bit of different pain, right? So jump in to the connected dog. I'm going to give away my favorite toy right now. I'm going to give it, I'm going to give away one of these as well. If you thought there was anything valuable in what I said today, please share it, write that you've shared it. And we'll give away another one on Saturday, but right now, Jill Conley, congratulations. You are the winner. All right. I want to read your comments. I'm not going to jump off just yet. And I recognize part of that belief is dealing with the critic, not just in your world, the critics of people saying, that's not going to work. Who told you that would work? I've been training dogs a long time.

Guess what? I get it too. I get it too. I will go into a local pet's mart and they will say, you know, you should be doing this with your dog. And I'll say, respectfully, that's not how I train my dog. Who told you that's going to work? I get it too. So the external critics, I believe are a little easier to turn down than the critic that's in your head. You need to, you need to assign that critic a name and you need to tell her, yeah, go have a coffee. I got this because that circle is, is filling this week. And I know that your dog is waiting to show you how brilliant they can be. Okay. Um, so I'm looking right. Wendy. Absolutely. We need to shift to believe that we can do this. Everybody to shift away from the feelings of overwhelm and just focus on what can I do today? Um, I could, what is it that they call doom scroll? I could doom scroll. And that's what we do to avoid our big feelings. Or I could put down the scroller, the, the iPad, the phone, and I could grab my lesson plan and I could create an environment of success and I could train my dog. Uh, what if my dog has foot movement after the word cook? Okay. Maura, what I would do then is I would rapid fire cookies. I wouldn't even say the word cook right now. I would just feed, feed, feed, feed. And then I would say, cook and feed. And then I would release them and move to a new location. So my goal would be not to grow my, uh, evaluation gap. My goal would be to stop the foot movement. That was a really good question. Um, I get it. It's overwhelmed. It's my, it's my critic and that I'm replacing with positive training who sits on my shoulder and changes. Let me sit on your shoulder, Deborah, because I can, I can, I can be pump squad girl. Uh, that's how I live my life. So I can, I can get rid of whoever the critic is, Deborah. Maybe it's, you know, downer Debbie that's sitting on your shoulder. Come on pump squad. Susie's coming in. Let me be there for you. All right. Um, so if you, if there was a gem that I shared with you today, then I want you to go to our Facebook page, write the gem. And then we are going to be giving away a propel. Boom. You've seen me use this from the great people at blue nine. You've seen me use this on our, uh, and some of, oh, I've used it in the platinum group for sure. I think I've used it here. So if I, if you would like to win a propel from the good people at blue nine, then go to our Facebook page and share more than one. If you want share the gem that you, that from this live, but here's why I really want you to share the gem

because there will be people who won't watch this live. It's an hour long, but they, their dog deserves to be cut some slack. So their dog deserves to know there's a better way. And I would love you to share those gems so that somebody going by our page can just read the one-liners and go, oh really? And that might spark a little bit of curiosity and we'll just have to fan that flame. And before you know it, more and more people are going to start believing in their dogs and training in a reinforcement based program and get better results than they've ever had before. Okay. Uh, I too, Trisha, it's what keeps me up at night. I wish others could see the benefit, but maybe they've tried it with a half filled belief circle. And that is going to, you're still going to see, you're still going to have some improvements, but we got to get rid of the critic that's in your head. And that's going to be a big, big part of it. I'm getting a puppy in July sky. This is a perfect time to join. Uh, yeah, Donna, if you're not on Facebook, share the learning zone. Absolutely. I love that. My kid also repeats what Susan says. I love that. Uh, our toys are from our sponsor for my morals. You can the number for my time rolls.com. If you'd like to check that, I think there's a tab for dogs that you can see all of our toys in there and all of my favorites that are in there. Um, so this was a question that's come up before, but I want you to re it's worth repeating. I'm, I'm treating my dog as we're walking. Should I use the word cook then I thought cook meant I'm delivering the cookie to you. So cook means hold your position. I'm delivering the cookie. Now they are moving, but they're still in a position. And so, yes, I would definitely deliver the cookie and say cook as I delivered that in that position. Right? So when we're working with the word cook, it doesn't mean sit. It doesn't mean down. It means whatever position you're in to hold it. Great, great question. Okay. We will be back on Saturday. Okay. And this our Saturday live will be go into the learning zone, review all the videos. If you have any questions on any of the videos, we're going to talk about those. I'll answer those questions on Saturday. Um, so please go back, look at the videos, read the lesson plans. Let me know if there's anything that you need more clarity with, we will be back Saturday. Okay. Thank you guys.
