예를 들어 안약을 넣어야 한다고 칩시다. 반려견에게 이 안약을 꼭 넣어줘야 하는데 정말 중요한 일이죠. 그런데 아시다시피, 세 명이 달라붙어서 개를 붙잡아야 하고, 개는 발버둥 치며 비명을 지릅니다. 그래서 가장 먼저 할 일은 당신이 안약을 들고 있을 때 긍정적인 CER을 만들어 주는 것입니다. 안약이 특정 서랍에 있다면, 차라리 그 위치를 옮기는 게 낫습니다. 기존의 인식을 바꾸려 애쓰는 것보다 그냥 다른 서랍이나 다른 장소, 혹은 가방 안에 있는 선반으로 옮기는 게 더 쉽거든요. 그렇게 하면 107화에서 제가 설명했던 CER을 만드는 방법으로 이어집니다. 미용이나 발톱 깎기를 위해 사용하는 두 가지 도구를 다루었었죠. 안약도 똑같은 방식으로 진행하면 됩니다. 이제 반려견은 안약을 보면 오, 좋다! 이 안약을 보면 무슨 일이 생길까? 난 이게 정말 좋아, 라고 생각하게 될 겁니다. 그러는 동안 반려견이 지금 상황이 괜찮다고 의사를 표현할 수 있는 자세를 만들어 주세요. 안약이나 귓병 약을 넣을 때 개가 서서 머리를 이리저리 흔들면 보호자가 처리하기가 더 어려울 수 있습니다. 그래서 저는 그런 상황에서 반려견이 의자나 발 받침대에 머리를 기대도록 가르칩니다. 그렇게 머리를 발 받침대에 대고 있는 동안, 반려견은 당신에게 계속 진행해도 좋다는 동의를 표시하는 것입니다. 이게 좋은 일이라는 걸 알기 때문에 반려견의 참여를 이끌어낼 수 있죠. 안약을 넣으려면 턱을 받치고 있어야 합니다. 반려견이 다가와서 턱을 대게 하는 행동을 단계별로 훈련(shaping)할 겁니다. 먼저 바닥에서 턱을 대는 행동을 가르치고 나서 엎드려(head down)라는 명령어를 가르친 뒤에 제 손을 활용하는 것을 좋아합니다. 제 손에는 다섯 손가락이 있죠. 저는 제 손을 이용해 반려견의 머리를 발 받침대나 의자 위로 유도하는 걸 좋아합니다. 그냥 알려주는 거죠. 이런 식으로 말이에요. 그것이 타겟을 만들고 '머리 내려'라고 말해요. 짠. 개가 해내죠. 보상을 시작하고 릴리즈를 줍니다. 우리가 원하는 건 머리를 내린 상태로 유지하는 지속 시간입니다. 보상하고, 보상하고, 보상하고, 릴리즈합니다. 필요하시겠죠. 여러분의 선택이기도 합니다. 그것에 대한 링크도 남겨둘게요. 왜냐하면 간식이 들어오면 개들은 머리를 들고 싶어 할 테니까요. 머리를 드는 건 게임이 끝났다는 뜻이에요. 그러니 만약 머리를 든다면, 네, '찾아'라고 말하며 간식을 멀리 던져줄 수는 있지만, 더 많은 간식을 얻을 기회는 주지 마세요. 머리를 계속 내리고 있다면, 계속해서 간식을 그 자리에 서 있는 동안 줄 수 있죠. 그렇죠? 그게 바로 우리가 원하는 거예요. 그리고 개가 '저는 이게 괜찮아요'라고 말하게 되면, 그때 눈을 만지거나 눈앞에 안약을 가져갈 수 있어요. 음,
Let's say it's the eye drops. I have to give my dog these eye drops. It's super important, but you know, it takes three of us and we have to hold them down and he fights and he screams. So, the first thing we're going to do is we're going to create a positive CER to where you're holding these eye drops. So, if it's a certain drawer, I would actually move it. It'd be easier than trying to reprogram an old one. Let's just move it to a different drawer or a different location, a shelf that's in a bag so that you go to episode number 107 where I shared how to create a CER, two different tools that you use for grooming or for nail trimming. You're going to do the exact same thing with your eye drops. So, now the dog sees the eye drops and they go, Ooh, yeah, I like that. What's going to happen with these eye drops? I really like them. Meanwhile, you're going to create a position that your dog can say, I'm okay with what's going on. So, let's say for eye drops or ear drops, maybe having the dog standing with their head be bopping all over might make it more difficult for you. So, for a situation like that, I would teach my dog to rest their head on a chair or a footstool. And so, as long as their head is on the footstool, they're saying to you, you have consent to carry on. And because I see that this is a good thing, you're getting buy-in from the dog. We need your chin to be rested so that we can do eye drops. You're going to work at the dog coming in, putting their chin down, shaping that behavior. You can, I like to shape it on the ground first, just shaping their head right on the ground, teach the word head down, and then use my paw. My paw, this is a hand that has five fingers in it. I like to use my hand to put their head over the footstool or a chair. Just tell them, you know, that creates the target and tell them head down. Boom. They do it. Start feeding it and give them release. All that we want is for them to have a duration hold with their head down. Feed, feed, feed, release. You need it. It's your choice too. I'll put a link to that one as well. Because as the food's coming in, they're going to want to lift their head off. The head off means games over. So, if their head comes off, then yeah, you can say search and throw the cookie off, but they don't get the chance to earn more cookies. If they keep the head down, you can just keep giving them bonbons while they're standing there. Right? So, that's what we want. And eventually as the dog says, I'm good with this, you can then touch the eye, put the eye drops in front of them. Well,

that's always meant good things because you've already spent some time conditioning the sight of that. Give them cookies. Touch that bottle to their face, give them cookies. Maybe touch your finger right around their eyelids, give them cookies. Whatever it is that your dog is saying, no thank you. Number one, I ask that you respect that your dog is saying, no thank you and say, well, this is important. We have to get it done. So, how can I use the things that Susan talked about, create steps that create positive events for my dog. So, they want to buy in that leads them to loving these things that they currently afraid of, right?
