I'm going to share the question of the day. It's funny when you say good morning when it's like afternoon here, right? Okay. Today's word of the day is connection. So what is a word that you would use to describe the connection you have when you're working with your dog? Yeah. Maybe your dog would use this word to hopefully be the same word. So that is good. Michelle, which one? This is light is just a little bit too bright. Solid Evan, a link, eye contact, that trust. That was my word too. Team. That's another really good word. Now I'm going to throw a wrench into this. Would that word change if things weren't going well? Would that word change? I don't know why my, everything looks a little bit red, doesn't it? Let me just see if this, is that better. Oh, I think I had it there for a minute. Scattered. Tanya, I love your honesty. Joy in tune fun. So does that word change when things are going, are not going well? So let's say, um, you are, um, you are out and your dog gets scared by something. Does that connection change? Or you're training something and your dog doesn't get it right. Does that word you're using change? Or you come home and you find your dog is pooped on the floor or shredded a dog bed or something worse. Does that change? So that, I mean, that's the goal for dog training, but let's, we got to do a little bit deeper and, and look at why, why we, what, like, why do we need to be connected? And how do I know if I am connected? Like Susan, these are way woo words, way woo words. So what are we talking about here with connection? And so think about when you get a puppy and, um, Oh my gosh, you just love your puppy, right? You feel so connected to that puppy. Puppy's not really that connected to you at first, are they? It's like, Hey, hi, I love you. Yeah. You're fun. Okay. No more cookies. Bye. And they're off investigating and romping. And so connection is something that grows. That's the first thing we

need to know. And it will grow in one of two directions. It will grow towards you or away for you. And, and think about, I'll give you another example with my own dog, this she's 15 months old now. Very, very strong herding instinct. She's a border collie. And when, um, I, I, with my own dogs, I don't let my puppies run with the whole group of dogs. The number one reason I don't is for safety. I don't want a puppy getting T-boned and potentially having an injury that would like be with them for the rest of their life. So the, the puppy, I don't want them not looking where they're going and running into an adult, the adults, I don't want them getting chasing each other and not noticing this little ball of fluff. So I don't walk my dogs, my puppies with the other dogs. That means I do extra walks when I have a puppy. So I'm very intentional about when I get a puppy. And so with this, when she was, uh, in, when she was, uh, five months old, it was Christmas day. And I took her for a walk with my other dogs and she was brilliant. Great connection came and she was called every time boxing day, the day after not so much. No, I'm hurting my mother. I actually can't hear you right now. And so what I had to do is get very intentional about this connection is important for me, for me to have with this dog for many, many reasons. Number one, safety for my dog. And so I got very intentional about going back, not letting her have that fun. You could say I'm a big meanie. I made sure I created fun in her life that replaced the fun she had by hurting her mother. And it only took me, I don't know, three or four months away from that. And now I can call her off of anything because I've got an amazing connection with that little puppy. And, and she's a puppy that if you followed my podcasts, you, you know, that I've gone through, she had resource guarding issues against the other dogs. And, and that, that never goes away. Really. It gets better, but I'm always on top of, um, looking at her body language to say, do you feel comfortable with this? Let me help you feel comfortable with this. Pardon the pun. This, this, and, and then we had, um, fear of children and of men, of new people that wouldn't talk generally really. And so when you're afraid, when we're out in public and you alarm bark at a person, does that connection change? No, it doesn't. And so how do we get to that place? So it's thinking about, um, when you're, when you have that puppy, always asking the question. And if you guys don't have a puppy, think about your own dog right now,

always asking a question, what is of value to this puppy or dog? That's where the connection currently is. I want the connection with me. I want my dog to be able to, you know, run and chase the dogs. Therefore they have to come and sit. And then I let them go. And then the connection goes through me to be able to go and run and chase those other dogs. Right? So you want to, um, make sure you're intentional when they're, they're very, very young or when you first get them, or now you're going to say, I need to do over. That's the really cool thing about dogs guys. You can, you can start a do over today. You can start a do over today. question. When you're building a connection, when you're wanting to reevaluate your connection, where is the value? Now there are people who have great connections with their dogs in the sport of whatever they're playing dog agility. My wish for the world is people would have that kind of connection outside of the sport. And how do I know they don't? Because there seems to be a growing number of people who, when their dog's sporting career is over, they find them a new home, which breaks my heart a little, because I believe all dogs should stay in their home for life. I believe you as a human being miss out on so much enrichment and so many life lessons in your life. If you don't have that dog grow up and stay in your home, regardless, every dog that I've ever owned has come into this home and they've stayed there. Now I'm not saying like, I have told people they should find a dog, this dog, a new home. And here's why they didn't have that connection. And I would ask them when I look at them, I'm like, there's something missing here. And I would stop what I'm doing. I stopped the training and I would say, do you love this dog? And they would, the people that I've done this to, they said, no, I barely, I barely like him. And I said, if I can see it, trust me, that dog can see it. And that's probably why you're having the behavior problems you are. And every dog deserves to be in a home where they're really well loved. So let's find him a new home. You will know that within the first week or two of having a dog in your home, it doesn't matter. It's not about whether the dog is good or bad. I feel incredibly connected to this. And I've had more behavior problems with her than any dog I've ever had. It has not once changed the connection I feel to her. You will know, you will know it and you will know it when it's good. And you'll know it when it's not great. People who say that they have their, they call it their soul once in a lifetime dog. I believe I've had 10 once in a lifetime dogs. And that's why I get to grow as a dog trainer. So that connection should be there. And, and if it's not evaluate, not why. And do you really want to deepen the connection you have with your dog? It will make dog training so much easier for you. And so you do that by being intentional about observing where your dog's getting their value. So when you're out walking, I'm always like, you know, when you're driving a car at driver's ed, they teach you to, uh, hands on 10 and two and do your shoulder checks. Always check your mirror, your two side mirrors when you're

driving, be aware, be present. I don't do that when I'm driving a car. And that's why I almost never drive a car. I'm an absent-minded driver. But when I'm walking a dog, you can bet your bottom dollar. I am always aware. I'm aware of somebody else has a dog out. I'm aware if there's children out on the street. I'm aware if there's a motorcycle coming at me, I'm aware of what's far. And now it's not like I'm nervous. I'm just, I just take it all in my peripheral vision as I'm being present for what's my dog alerting to what's my dog sniffing now. That's what helps create and keep that great connection. So I'm not like walking my dog and flipping through my iPhone and then, uh, finding, oh, running into the neighbors and then just saying, Hey, yeah. Um, did you see that great Netflix special on Colin Kaepernick? It's a good one by the way. Yeah, it was. Yeah. And now what happens to your dog? They're finding value somewhere else. You were just walking with them and now you don't. So that's defining and helping to erode the connection with your dog. When you're walking your dog, walk your dog. Right? So if I see my neighbor, truthfully, I don't have neighbors. Well, I do, but they're about a kilometer away. But if I was walking and somebody said this, this has happened, I'm walking. And then somebody say, excuse me, are you Susan Garrett? What I will do is I will say to my dog sit, or I'll put a tug toy in their mouth. Generally, I will say sit, and then I will take their collar and I'll talk to the person while I'm patting my dog. And I'm still connecting because I'm holding their collar. And then I'll say, yeah, thank you. It's been great chatting. Um, we're off doing an adventure. So we'll maybe bump into each other again. That's how it goes. All right. So the connection is about being present. So if I asked you right now, what other words could define the word connection, not the kind of connection, but what other word would you use to say, um, the connection with the dog? I kind of gave it away. I just did give you one word word. For me, it's being present, right? Being aware of where that value is that I can anticipate. lack of connection because quite honestly, a lot of the times the handler, isn't sure of how how to remember a course, present it to a dog and not get in the dog's way. And when you get in your dog's way, you break connection. And so in agility connections about running, directing and anticipating what my dog is going to do. So I'm so connected. I can see my dog as I'm running as fast as I can. This is me running. Okay. It's not running, but it is running. I'm running as fast as I can. My dog is still connected with me, but I can see, or I can anticipate by the dog's eyes and their shoulders. Are they following me or are they about to do something else? And I can respond to that before it happens. Right? So with a young dog, it might happen more often. Ideally not. Or handling 360 students. I wish I could show you some of the videos of those people that never trained in agility before, but they had the patients to work through H360 is all about building connection first and layering that connection with the moves of agility and layering that connection with the obstacles of agility. And then layering that connection with a sequence with more than one obstacle. Here's what most people do is they get focused on connecting with the objects. I want my dog to learn how to do a tunnel and a seesaw and weepholes. And they think that's what agility is about. And then they take those isolated skills and they would take them to a trial and it's a dog's breakfast quite often. Right? You know what I mean by that? It's just a cluster because it didn't start with connection. All amazing agility teamwork starts with a foundational layer of intentionally created connection as does all the, you might be listening to this going, Susan, I don't have any interest in doing dog agility. All I want to do is have an amazing family pet that when they're out at the park, that they're going to come when they're called. If another dog comes towards me and I want to be the one that you can trust me. You don't have to, you don't have to be out in front. I'll ask my dogs to lie down and I will step in front of the dog and say, Hey, can you come get your dog? We did a video on that, didn't we? Okay. So that's how I see connection.
