저는 반려견 훈련이 친구와의 대화와 같다고 생각합니다. 대화 중에 우리가 친구가 내놓는 답변을 마음에 들어 하지 않을 때 문제가 발생하며, 결국 우리는 질문을 바꾸려 하게 됩니다. 오늘은 우리가 무의식적으로 반려견을 통제하려고 하는 습관에 대해 깊이 파고들어 보려 합니다. 또한 제가 제 반려견 훈련에서 스스로에게 끊임없이 던지는 네 가지 질문을 설명하기 위해 사용하는 빠르고 기억하기 쉬운 약어를 여러분께 공유하려고 합니다. 제가 제 학생들에게도 반려견 훈련 중에 스스로에게 질문해 보라고 권하는 그 네 가지 질문은 이 약어로 정의됩니다. 재채기가 나오려는 것을 참는 것과 비슷하죠. EGTT입니다. 말씀드렸죠. 이제 PLAY라는 약어를 사용하실 수도 있습니다. 어떻게 하는지 보여드릴게요. 하지만 정말 그렇습니다. 자, 첫 번째 질문, 첫 번째 질문은 제 반려견에게 무엇이 가치 있는지 파악하는 것입니다. 그래서 저는 호기심 어린 마음으로 접근할 겁니다. 반려견들은 태어날 때부터 음식과 물을 좋아하도록 설정되어 있죠. 그것이 바로 가치 있는 것입니다. 하지만 그 가치는 많은 상황에 따라 달라질 것입니다. 예를 들어, 반려견과 막 프리스비를 했는데 날씨가 매우 덥다고 해보죠. 조심해야 합니다. 날씨가 너무 더울 때 반려견과 공놀이를 하는 것과 같은 행동은 조심하세요. 하지만 반려견이 혀를 밖으로 내밀고 있는데 '야, 말린 팝콘 좀 먹을래?'라고 하면, '아니요, 됐습니다.'라고 하겠죠. 자, 그럼 무엇이 가치 있을까요? 네, 가치 있는 것은 커다란 물그릇입니다. 좋아요. 그래서 첫 번째 질문은 지금 이 순간 무엇이 가치 있는지 파악하고, 평가하고, 확립해야 한다는 것입니다. 무엇이 가치 있을까요? 무엇이 가치 있는지 모르면 훈련할 수 없습니다. 이제 두 번째는 G입니다. 바로 그 G죠. G는 이제 가치 있는 것을 키워야 한다는 의미입니다. 왜냐하면 한 가지만 사용한다면 반려견에게 이런 요구를 하는 셈이니까요. '아, 집에서는 닭고기 소시지를 주는데, 왜 내가 말을 들어야 하지?' 방해 요소가 많은 공원에서 닭고기 소시지로 훈련할 때 말이죠? 그래서 무엇이 가치 있는지 확립해야 하고, 이제 그것을 키워나가야 합니다. 어쩌면 우리는 그것을 집에 있을 때는 건조 간식으로, 그리고 정말 흥미로운 경우에는 갓 구운 로스트 비프나 다른 간식들로 키울 수 있겠죠. 간 페이스트(Liver pate)는 정말 기본입니다. 강아지가 입이 짧다면 간 페이스트를 하나 장만해 보세요. 그건 아주 높은 가치를 지니지만, 중간 단계의 가치도 필요하고 낮은 단계의 가치도 필요합니다. 그러니 여러분은 당신과 함께 터그 놀이를 하는 가치를 키우는 것처럼 여러 가지를 키워나가게 될 겁니다. 좋습니다. 그래서, 이런 것들이 제가 훈련의 모든 단계에서 끊임없이 고민하는 것들입니다. 지금 무엇이 가치 있는가? 제가 가치를 더 키울 수 있는 것들이 있을까? 그것이 우리 세 번째 질문으로 이어집니다. 바로 T입니다. 우리는
I believe dog training is like a conversation with a friend. Challenges happen with that conversation when we don't like the answer that our friend is giving and we end up trying to change the question. Today, we're doing a deep dive into the unconscious habit some of us have of trying to control the dog. I'm also going to share with you this quick and catchy acronym that I use to explain four questions that I ask myself constantly in my own dog training that I ask my students to ask themselves in their dog training. The four questions are defined by the acronym. It's kind of like catching yourself in a sneeze. EGTT. I told you. Now, you could also use the acronym PLAY. I'll show you how you do that. But truly it's it. So, the first question, the first question is I want to establish what's a value for my dog. So, I'm going to be going at a place of curiosity. Now, dogs come pre-programmed. They like food and water. That's what's of value. But that value will be different depending on a lot of things. So, let's say you were just playing frisbee with your dog and it's super hot. Be careful there. Be careful about doing things like that, playing catch with your dog when it's super hot. But your dog's tongue's hanging out of their mouth and you say, hey, how about some dried popcorn? No, thank you. So, let's say, what's a value. Right. Then what's of value is a big bowl of water. Okay. So, the first question is I need to find out, evaluate, establish at this moment what's of value. What's of value? You can't train unless you know what's of value. Now, our second is the G and that is the G of the G. The G is we need to now grow what's of value. So, you need to grow that because if we only use one thing, then we're asking a dog to say, oh, I get chicken wieners at home. Why would I listen to you when you're training with chicken wieners at the park where there's a lot of distractions? So, we need to establish what's of value and now we need to grow that. And we might grow it to some dried treats when we're at home and some really exciting, maybe fresh roast beef or some treats. Liver pate is a really go-to. If you've got a picky eater, go pick yourself up some liver pate. That's super high value, but you need medium value. You need low value. So, you're going to grow things like growing the value of tugging with you, tugging a toy with you. All right. So, those are things that I'm constantly at every stage of my training. What's a value now? Are there more things I could be growing value with? And that leads us to our third question. It's the T. So, we've got

'아, 우리 개는 핫도그를 정말 좋아해. 봐, 앉아도 하고, 엎드려도 하고, 내 옆에서 껑충거리기도 하지. 엄마가 쿠키를 가졌으니 올 거야.'라고 하면서 매번 올 거라고 생각하지만, 사실은 그렇지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 가치가 핫도그에만 머물러 있기 때문이죠. 여러분의 개는 당신과 핫도그 대신 방해 요소를 선택하는 결정을 내릴 것입니다. 자, 그래서, 우리는 가치를 전이시켜야 합니다. 그게 세 번째 질문입니다. 지금 나는 무엇으로 가치를 전이시켜야 하는가? 그리고 그것은 여러분의 반려견의 생명을 구할 수 있는 아주 중요한 것, 바로 반려견의 이름으로 가치를 전이시키는 것만큼 간단한 것일 수도 있습니다. 어떤 견종을 키우는지는 중요하지 않습니다. 아무런 상관이 없어요. 중요한 건 오직 가치 전이입니다. 예를 하나 들어볼게요. 저희 리콜러(Recallers) 수강생 중 한 명이 최근에 아주 멋진 영상을 공유해 주었는데, 예전 영상들을 살펴보다가 이런 말을 하더군요. 그녀가 처음 리콜러를 시작했을 때, 반려견의 저녁 식사를 준비할 때마다 개들이 신나서 어쩔 줄 몰라 했다고요. 그러면 개들이 장난감을 낚아채서 마구 흔들기 시작하고, 아마 세 마리가 달려들어 줄다리기를 하기도 하겠죠. 그러다 흥분이 지나쳐서 밥을 먹일 때까지 집 안을 미친 듯이 뛰어다니곤 했어요. 그런데 지금은 저녁 먹는 모습을 보여주는 영상을 보니까 다들 그냥 가만히 있더라고요. 완전히 편안해 보이죠. 불안해하는 기색도 없고요. 짖으면서, 엄마, 빨리 밥 좀 줘요! 라고 보채지도 않아요. 그냥 차분한 거죠, 그렇죠? 그게 바로 가치 이전입니다. 이 개들은 달마시안 세 마리예요. 리콜러(Recallers) 이야기는 완전히 혼란과 무질서 속에서 살던 성견 달마시안 세 마리로 시작하죠. 집 안을 미친 듯이 뛰어다니기만 했으니까요. 행복한 결말은 보호자분이 정말 환상적으로 해냈다는 거예요. 전문 애견 훈련사가 아니라 지금 이 방송을 듣고 계신 분들과 똑같은 일반 반려견 보호자라는 점이 중요하죠. 그래서 퍼치 워크(perch work) 영상을 따라 해보신 분들은, 개에게 강화 구역(reinforcement zone)을 인식시키고 퍼치를 활용하는 방법이 곧 가치를 이전하는 과정임을 아실 겁니다. 이제 두 번째 T, 즉 이 짧고 기억하기 쉬운 약자의 네 번째 철자로 넘어가서, 가치를 테스트(test)해 볼 겁니다. 지금까지 퍼치 워크를 통해 강화 구역에 대한 가치를 쌓아온 우리 강아지를 데리고, 앞마당으로 나가서 강아지가 한 걸음 떼고 보상을 받을 수 있는지 확인해 보는 거죠. 그런데 문제는, 사람들이 무엇이 가치 있는지를 일단 정해버린다는 거예요. 아, 핫도그를 좋아해? 좋아, 평생 핫도그만 써야지. 그러고는 바로 가치 테스트 단계로 넘어가 버리죠. 산책하러 나가서 네가 핫도그를 얼마나 좋아하는지 확인해 볼 거야. 내 옆에 계속 있을 수 있니? 왜냐하면 제가 유혹(lure)해서 여기 머무르게 하려는 거니까요. 바로 거기서 대화가 꼬이는 겁니다.
the UGT. The T is we need to think of transferring the value. And so often people who use lures in their training, they don't think of transferring the value. Oh, my dog loves hot dogs. Look, he'll sit, he'll down, he'll prance by my side. He'll come, look, mommy's got a cookie. He'll come every time. But the joke's on you because he won't come every time because the value stays with the wiener. Your dog will make a decision to choose the distraction over you and the wiener. Okay. So, we need to transfer the value. That's question number three. What should I be transferring the value to now? And it could be something as simple as transferring the value into something super important that could save your dog's life, their name. It doesn't matter what breed of dog you have. It makes no difference whatsoever. It's all about the transfer value. I'll give you an example. One of our Recaller students recently shared this awesome video where she was going looking through some old videos and she said, the first, she first started Recallers, every time she'd get her dog's dinner ready, they'd get excited. And they'd grab a toy and they'd start killing the toy and they'd maybe three of them would get tugging on it and they get over aroused and they'd start running around the house like maniacs until she got them fed. And then she showed a video of them doing dinner now and they're all just hanging out. You can see they look completely chill. There's no anxiety. They're not barking and saying, hurry up mom, get my food on the table. They're just chill, right? That's just a transfer value. These are three Dalmatians. And we start the story of Recallers with three adult Dalmatians living in complete chaos and anarchy because they're just running crazy all over the house. And the happy ending is she's just done a fantastic job. And it's not like we're talking about a professional dog trainer, just a pet owner like anybody listening to this. So, any of you who have followed the perch work video where we're talking about getting your dog into reinforcement zone and using the perch, you're transferring value. And now we're going to our second T, the fourth letter in that quick and catchy acronym, and that is we're going to test the value. So, we're going to take our dog who we've been building value for reinforcement zone with all that perch work. And we're going to go out to our front yard and see if our dog can take one step and get rewarded. But the challenge is, what happens is people establish what's a value. Oh, you like hot dogs? 그러고 나서 사람들은 이 강화 기반의 애견 훈련이라는 건 헛소리야, 실제로 효과도 없다고 말하죠. 아니에요, 그게 아니죠. 그건 그냥 훈련 방식의 문제일 뿐입니다. 방법을 제대로 알면 효과가 있을 겁니다. 왜냐하면 제 개들은 소시지보다 사슴을 선택할 것이기 때문입니다. 그러니 효과가 없을 수밖에 없죠. 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 것은 효과가 있을 수 있고 실제로 효과가 있다는 것입니다. 제 개들에게만 효과가 있는 게 아닙니다. 제 개들도 누구 못지않게 사슴을 쫓는 데 집착합니다. 누구든 자신의 반려견과 중립적인 위치에서 대화하고 싶어 하는 사람이라면 누구의 개에게나 효과가 있습니다. 저는 반려견과의 모든 대화에 호기심을 가지고 접근하고 싶습니다. 좋습니다. 이제 빠르고 멋지고 기억하기 쉬운 약어를 얻었습니다. 아까 말씀드렸듯이 만약 필요하다면 그 약어를 PLAY로 만들 수 있습니다. 솔직히 말해서, 정말 훌륭하고 효과적인 반려견 훈련이란 결국 반려견과 함께 노는 것이기 때문이죠. 자, 여기 그 멋지고 빠르고 기억하기 쉬운 PLAY라는 약어가 있습니다. 그것은 Please(부디) 가치를 확립하고, Lengthen(늘리거나) 가치를 키우고, Actually(실제로) 가치를 전이시킨 다음, You(당신이) 가치를 테스트한다는 뜻입니다. P-L-A-Y. 약어가 얼마나 쉽게 작용하는지 보이시나요? 이 네 가지 질문을 기억하는 데 도움을 주는 기억하기 쉬운 문구일 뿐입니다. 반려견과 훈련 중인 단계가 어느 단계이든 상관없이 말이죠.
we're using hot dogs for the rest of your life. And then they jump right through to testing the value. We're going to go for a walk and I want to see how much you like the hot dog. Can you stay by my side? Because I'm luring it, luring you to stay here. And that's where the conversation goes bad. And that's when people say this reinforcement-based dog training crap, it doesn't really work. No, because my dogs are going to choose the deer over the wiener. So, it can't work. I'm here to tell you it can and it does work. It works not just for my dogs and my dogs are as driven about chasing deer as anybody's. It works for anybody's dog who is willing to say, I want that conversation with my dog from a place of neutrality. I want to approach every conversation with my dog from a place of curiosity. All right. So, we've got that quick and fancy, catchy acronym. Now, I did say, if you need it, we can make it the acronym PLAY because let's face it, that's what dog training, really good, effective dog training is all about playing with their dog. Okay. So, here's that fancy, quick and catchy acronym with PLAY. And it is, please establish value. Lengthen or grow the value. Actually transfer the value. And then you test the value. P-L-A-Y. See how easy acronyms work? It's just a catchy phrase to help you remember those four questions, no matter what stage of training that you're at with your dog.
