Why Your Dog's Recall Training Fails In The Real World

People think in end terms. Every dog owner thinks in, well, that can all be great. But what is it that I really want? Look, I've been in this game for 20 years plus. And I know that people want what matters. And what matters is the real world. And I'm going to tell you right now what they want. I want a recall. Now, who wouldn't want a recall? Is there somebody here that would not like a recall? Please raise your hands. Is there anybody who says, I do not need a recall? Anybody, please, please, you'll be the first. But please tell me if you do not need a recall. Okay, I guess you all need a recall. So wouldn't it make sense if I want a recall and everybody wants it? That would be the first thing I teach my dog is when I call his name is going to come. He's going to get his reward. And if I do it enough times, and if I have a leash even to pull him back, would he then understand the recall? And any logic mind then would say, yes, that kind of makes sense. If that is really important to you. And if that's what you want, you're going to put that on the front end. Of your training. Because then the more you do this recall training, the more you secure it, the more you give incentives on it. Well, the most probably it is your dog is going to do this. Well, it's not. I'm going to tell you right now. What is a recall, really? Because we got to stop calling this stuff basic obedience. Like if you said a recall was on my top three. Well, okay. Then let's talk about it. If it's in your top three. A recall is a pure switch drive. 100% switch drive. Because for example, if he is sniffing your carpet, you're inside and you're in the kitchen and you have his favorite steak out and you say, Bobby, and the dog just hears the sound of the paper wrapped around the steak or whatever. He smells it. He knows it. He's done it before. Oh, he's going to come out of the blocks fast. So that's not a drive switch. A recall is a downgraded drive switch. That is what a real recall is. That means my dog was about to kill the cat, the neighbor's cat. He was in full prey drive. And I recalled him because I had his favorite kibble in my pocket or at his favorite ball. How could that compete to killing the cat? It usually can't. But that is what a recall would really mean is that you can switch the dog's drive and immediately downgrade whatever he was doing. You see? So his mouth is wide open. He's about to eat it, kill it, bite it, whatever it is, consume it, lick it, name it. But you now want this dog to change his drives. Remember, switch drives. You want him now to move. Remember, movement. Move towards you in a finished position.

여기서 MVP(본능 조절 프로그램)의 역설적인 부분이 나옵니다.
So change his visuals from one thing he was locked on to you, locked on you. And then finish this position with you. That means movement. So you switch drives, you switch visuals, and you switch its movement into a finished position. That is what a recall is. Is there anybody here right now that would say, yes, that is basic obedience. That is as basic as it comes. I can switch drives, switch visuals, and switch movement. And I can do that. If I just do it enough times, my dog is going to be recalled from the cat, the squirrel, the dog, anything, it's not going to happen. It's not going to happen. It would be just as crazy as me telling you, hey, guys, you ever done any protection work? Let's just have your dog bite and have fun and bite his sleeve for a whole year when he was born from eight weeks to a whole year. And then we're going to recall him back, see what happens. Or nothing will happen. I can write you on a piece of paper. Nothing will happen. Nothing. Absolutely not. If you've done the job right. If you made him enjoy it. If your dog was having the fun of its life. He was like totally into it. He's like, whoa, this is the best thing. And then you recall nothing's going to happen. Although you might've recalled him a thousand times in a different equation. At that point, he will not switch his drives, let alone switch his visuals. And he will not move towards you. It's just not going to happen. You see? So now that changes our game a little bit because knowing this and not acting upon it. So to know what not to do is not to know. So now that you know it's a drive switch, you know it's a visual switch, and you know it's a movement switch. My question to you would be, well, what are you going to do about it? Then now that you know, it's a little bit more complex in its form, as it's not complex in execution, it's complex in its form of development. Because if you want to master the dog's drive, if you want to switch it, and here comes a counterintuitive part of the MVP. If you want to switch drives, you first have to elevate the drive. You first have to create and bring more drive, develop more drive. Now, why is that? Why is Nina wanting to have more drive in these dogs? They're not working dogs. We just want a dog that behaves. Well, here's the thing. Drive is energy. Remember? And you're going to need energy, first of all, to have the dog in the development mode, state of mind. That is one. But secondly, if you want to make it anywhere close to real world applications, remember, the real world is what matters. Well, in the real world, your dog's drive is going to go up really fast. Sometimes without you even knowing,

and then you will never had any simulation of a dog in an elevated state of drive. And now you want to counter this with your basic obedience. You practice at home where everything was going great. Now your dog's in high drive, want to chase dogs, cats, whatever, but you can't switch drives. Well, you first of all, never even manage drives. You never even elevated their drive, let alone switch it. So that brings me to another big concept, which is the obsession of the dog. I think, I believe, and again, the chat is open here. I'm going to read it in a second, but I want to make my point. A dog is obsessive by nature a little bit. That means I've seen dogs chase their tails. Sometimes they have nothing to do. I've seen them lick their paws and then it's excessively, obsessively start licking things. Then they want to bark. And then they bark obsessively somehow. So dogs are kind of obsessive. Well, at least the ones I met my entire life is like, they do stuff and live the one more than another, but a little bit obsessive by default. I would say, why is that a good thing? Well, it could, can be a good thing. And actually it is a good thing. If you control the obsessions, for example, I'm going to give you one. If my dog was obsessed with moving with me and focusing on me, would that be bad? I'm just saying like, choose your obsessions. You can choose dog obsessed on other dogs or cats or anything out in the world, or dog obsessed with my ball, for example. And I happen to have this ball in my pocket. Well, that's great. Now I can compete with whatever is out there. So you have to first nurture and you have to feed the obsession in what you have stakes in. And whatever you buy is your stake. Not EA with an A. Stake. You hold stakes in this. So that being said, you need to master what you buy in terms of drive and obsession towards what you buy and what you purchase, which is its food and its ball. And those happen to be also the things that they want. So how good can it be? So now it's starting to line up a little bit because there was a lot of conflicts and interest when it came to my dog wants to choose direction. The dog wants to choose the pace. My dog is obsessed with things that don't concern me. So now we want a calm dog. We want him to have a recall, but yet we need to switch drives. In order to switch drives, you first have to elevate the drive. You put this whole recall thing in the freezer. We're not going to worry about this. We'll put the whole marker thing in the freezer. I guess we're not going to communicate anytime soon. The leash. Oh yeah, I was having a leash too. Well, what are we going to do with this? Well,

toss it, just go to an environment where you can use your both hands without the leash. That means you're going to go into maybe his backyard, maybe his living room, whatever, where he's not all over the place. He can't run away because we have to master one skill at a time. First simplicity. If you see a dog do crazy things and, and protection, or like, I'm going to say protection dogs. Why? Okay. There's dogs being sold for a hundred, 200, $300,000 people, $300,000 plus for a dog. I'm not kidding you. Would you say this dog has a few skills then if he's getting sold for a hundred K plus? I would say, yes. Well then not just, yes. I want to know what are these crazy skills that maybe I could teach your dog, or you could teach your own dog that would be worth a hundred thousand dollars. And one of the main things is actually a protection dog goes high and drive. When you recall him, it goes low into drive, right? You can, you control his mouth. You can control his movement. You control his vocals. You control his visuals. Isn't that basically what the MVP is about? So if I do MVP, I have a protection dog. Well, not quite yet because there's also something called the PPD. Anyways, you can combine the two, but that still doesn't mean you have it. You still have to master the skill to then give it to your dog. And then you have to go through the process. And this process is not a one week type of training. It's not a two week. It's not a two month. It's actually a couple of months to even a couple of years, not 10 years, please, because then he might not be around. You see? So that's where we're going with this.
