Normalizing Imperfection in Dog Training

To Susan Garrett, sometimes when I'm watching others, I get the feeling that I'm behind somehow, that I can't be as good as them. I see folks with younger dogs that have now passed up my dog, and it sometimes makes me feel like I missed something. I feel overwhelmed and behind. Did or do you ever have moments of doubts within your own agility skills? Comparing yourself to others? I believe there's an image of perfection that social media is spreading. That perfection is normalized for one-year-old dogs, and that's not reality. If your reality is not what you're seeing in social media, it's discouraging, it's depressing, and it makes you wonder if you're doing the right thing, if you should even be bothering to do this. People show you everything's beautiful. The social media with the glam filters on, right? It reminds me of when I was a kid. We always used the back door. I have eight brothers and sisters, and so there was always a pile of sneakers and boots, and in the winter there was mitts and scarves and hats all over the landing. And the front door was pristine. I mean, it was always polished and perfect. And so if that was your first peek into this house with nine children, you would go like, wow, they've got it together here. People are posting these videos of their one-year-old puppies without flaws. I mean, they're amazing. I'm impressed. And I've done it myself. I've done it myself with swagger and with momentum, but I realize the impact. Let's start normalizing the chaos that is raising a puppy. The challenges that I have with this I've never had with any other puppy. Every other dog I've ever owned, I was going teaching seminars. I was using my puppies as demo dogs when I was teaching seminars. I was going to competitions, and my puppies would come along and be able to watch other dogs and people and be in that vibe, that energy, the pulse of an agility trial. And she's had none of that. And so it's created a different set of challenges for us. And that's okay. It's got to be okay. Because otherwise, you would get depressed and give up on the dog. And as a one-year-old dog, I've got some amazing agility skills. I could show videos of her discrimination, of her verbal cues, of her running dog walk, how she understands how to come out of tunnels and turn tight over jumps. And there's a lot of brilliant skills that she has. That's my beautiful front door. This, you know, she had separation anxiety, which I had to work on. And then she had resource guarding. And then because of the pandemic, we couldn't get out as much.

And so as an 11-month-old puppy, I realized she was terrified of children, of men, and of dogs. I can appreciate how difficult it might be, especially if you're early on your journey in dog training, to wonder where it's going and wonder if it is possible. I'm getting emotional because I think about when I was there. But now I know it's possible. I wish I could give that knowledge to all of you, but I think that's what's called experience. I wish I could give the young people the confidence to know that, just make it better tomorrow than it was today. And don't look at the people and what they've accomplished and what you haven't. Look at where you were last week and give yourself grace and celebrate that. Consistent effort daily is going to take you to an amazing place. But if you get disappointed or depressed by looking at somebody else's front door, you're not going to take that consistent effort. And so you're going to stay where you are. Just one step every day is going to take you to a better place. I know that. And that's, I wish I could give to everybody. So today I'm celebrating this's first birthday by focusing on progress rather than perfection. I'm sharing both our successes and also our challenges. Remember when you're watching those training videos on social media, you're only getting a glimpse at someone's polished front door. And that should never be compared to your messy back door. Oh yeah. And happy birthday this. Thank you.
