개들은 무엇을 해야 할지 보여주거나 말해준다고 해서 스스로 결정하는 법을 배우지 않습니다. 개들은 직접 결정을 내려봄으로써 스스로 결정하는 법을 배웁니다. 저는 이것이 현대 반려견 훈련에서 가장 크게 결여된 부분 중 하나라고 생각합니다. 오늘은 반려견 훈련에 대해 완전히 다른 관점을 여러분과 공유하고자 합니다. 그 관점은 주변 환경이 갑자기 매우 흥분되는 상황으로 돌변했을 때를 대비하는 훈련 방식입니다. 그럴 때는 우리가 개들에게 미리 명령을 내릴 시간조차 없기 때문이죠. 제가 제 반려견들과 제 학생들의 반려견들을 가르칠 때 사용하는 모든 기초는 일련의 간단하고 전략적으로 설계된 게임들에 기반을 두고 있습니다. 저는 이것을 '이거 아니면 저거(this or that)' 게임이라고 부릅니다. 왜냐하면 주변 환경이 예측 불가능하게 변했을 때, 개들이 가장 중요한 순간에 올바른 결정을 내릴 수 있기를 바라기 때문입니다.
Dogs don't become decision makers by being shown or told what to do. They become decision makers by making decisions. I believe this is one of the biggest missing pieces in modern dog training. Today I'm going to share with you a completely different way to think about training a dog. One that prepares our dogs for when the environment turns wildly exciting all of a sudden and there isn't time for us to give those dogs a preemptive cue. All of the foundation of everything I teach my dogs and my students' dogs is based on a series of simple, strategically layered games. I call them this or that games. Because when that environment does turn unpredictable, we want dogs to be able to make good decisions in the moment that matter most.
