Understanding Your Dog's Reinforcement Zone (RZ) with Susan Garrett

Today it's about the reinforcement zone. If we create a reinforcement zone that is very specific for our dogs, that's where they're going to want to hang out. And the truth is, you already have one. You just don't know about it. For most people, the reinforcement zone is right in front of them. And here's why. You're sitting down and watching TV, the dog comes up and you go, oh, that's a nice boy. Rewards happening right in front. You go to give your dog their dinner dish and boom, the association, classical conditioning, you being in front of the dog and their dinner dish comes in. You go to give them a cookie. Oh, you're a nice kid. All that reinforcement happens in front, somewhere in front, but it's arbitrary. The dog though, figures out if I'm here, this is where the good things happen. And here's the challenge with that. When you're trying to walk your dog, you don't want them in front. So now all the time you've spent up building value for being in front, we've got to dismiss it when we actually want to do something. And for those of you that want to play a sport like dog agility or rally or obedience or anything, we want our dogs at our side. Now we have to fight against all that reinforcement we just put in as the dog was growing up or learning to hang out with us and being in front.
