If you've ever filled a topple or a kong for your dog and thought that you were filling their quota of enrichment for the day, I think both you and your dog are going to be happy that you happened on today's episode of Shaped by Dog. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shaped by Dog. I have been wanting to do this episode for a very long time. So much so that now I've got so much to share. I think it's going to be a two-part episode. Today I'm going to go over what really is enrichment, why it's so important for our dogs, what it is not, and how you can start compiling a list of things that will be ideal for your own particular dog. Because let's face it, no two dogs are alike, kind of like people. I happen to be a real sports and music fanatic. I have friends who would never step foot inside of an arena to watch a game. We're all different. Doesn't make one better or worse, just like our dogs. They're all different. So, after today's episode, you will be getting a little bit of homework that will allow you to really dig deep into the needs that your particular dog or dogs may have. But first, let's talk about what is enrichment. Really, it's simple as just creating a variety of experiences for your dog to meet their needs, meet their emotional needs, their social needs, their instinctive needs, their mental needs, and sometimes their physical needs. Now, not one activity is going to meet all of those needs, which is why variety is important. More on that later. We want to meet their needs in a really meaningful way, a way that they will find value in, a way that they will feel enriched. Because dogs aren't like furniture. They're not meant to be sitting around, like some dogs that unfortunately you still see chained to a dog house in a backyard for 99% of their entire day. That is a dog who is not living an enriched life. Dogs have curious minds. They have instinctive drives. And when those needs of the curious mind and the instinctive drives are not met, you will see anxiety get expressed in the form of sometimes destruction, digging up all of your flowers, shredding your furniture, couch cushions, or maybe finding entertainment by barking at cars passing by your front window. True enrichment may be engagement with you in the form of dog training. That definitely is enriching your dog life, but there's so much more that doesn't need to involve you. True enrichment provides agency in that the dog can choose. The dog allows the activity that is meeting their needs. Now some enrichment has a level of challenge to it. Maybe mental challenge for the

가끔씩은 그렇게 하는 것도 인리치먼트가 맞습니다. 저는 예전에 마블 슬래브(대리석 판) 위에서 아이스크림과 각종 토핑을 섞어주던 그 아이스크림 가게가 처음 생겼을 때를 기억합니다. 세상에, 저에겐 정말 천국 같은 곳이었죠. 하지만 만약 제가 매일 그걸 먹었다면, 더 이상 천국처럼 느껴지지 않았을 겁니다. 반려견이 간식을 꺼내 먹으며 즐길 수 있도록 콩 장난감에 특별한 간식을 채워주는 건 정말 멋진 일입니다. 네, 그건 가끔씩 할 수 있는 인리치먼트의 한 형태가 될 수 있습니다. 하지만 매일 하는 것은 그리 좋은 방법이 아닙니다. 자, 이제 인리치먼트가 아닌 것에 대해 더 이야기해 봅시다. 인리치먼트는 수동적인 것이 아닙니다. TV나 라디오를 켜두는 것은 인리치먼트가 아닙니다. 그건 그저 주의를 돌리는 것일 뿐입니다. 예를 들어 호텔의 소음을 묻어버리는 정도의 효과겠죠. 그것이 반려견의 삶을 풍요롭게 한다고 생각하지 마세요. 인리치먼트는 본질적으로 위험해서는 안 됩니다. 예를 들어 어떤 사람들은 질문하신 내용의 흐름상 생략된 항목이 있어 18개의 객체를 맞추기 위해 조정합니다. 반려견을 위한 인리치먼트는 개가 안전하게 주도권을 가질 수 있는 활동이어야 합니다. 따라서 무조건적인 간식 급여보다는 개가 스스로 무언가를 성취할 수 있는 기회를 주는 것이 진정한 인리치먼트입니다. 레이저 포인터를 사용해 반려견이 그것을 쫓게 하는 것을 좋아합니다. 그것은 잠재적으로 위험할 뿐만 아니라 반려견의 눈에 레이저가 들어가면 매우 위험하며, 강박 장애(OCD) 행동을 유발할 수 있습니다. 그림자를 쫓거나 시계에서 반사된 빛이 천장에 비치는 것을 찾는 행동을 시작하게 되죠. 저는 정말 많은 반려견이 레이저 포인터를 쫓는 것이 재밌을 것이라 생각한 누군가 때문에 생긴 문제들을 봐왔습니다. 제발, 하지 마세요. 그냥 하지 마세요. 즉, 인리치먼트(enrichment)는 수동적이지 않습니다. 위험해서도 안 되고요. 제발, 제발, 압도적이어서도 안 됩니다. 즉, 애견 카페나 애견 공원에 가는 것이죠. 여러분은 '아, 우리 반려견의 삶을 풍요롭게 해줘야지. 애견 공원에 가야겠다'라고 생각할지 모릅니다. 잠재적으로 어떤 반려견들에게는, 적절한 환경의 애견 공원이라면 그럴 수도 있겠죠. 데이케어(유치원)도 마찬가지입니다. 적절한 반려견이라면 말이죠. 물론 훌륭한 데이케어 시설들도 있지만, 그만큼 혹은 그보다 더 반려견에게 좋지 않은 곳도 많습니다. 그곳은 압도적인 환경이 될 수 있습니다. 만약 반려견에게 다른 개를 만나야 하는 사회적 욕구가 없다면, 애견 공원은 가장 최악의 장소입니다. 개별 반려견의 욕구를 충족시키는 방법을 모르는 체계적이지 않은 데이케어 역시 반려견을 데려갈 곳이 못 됩니다. 좋은 인리치먼트는 확실히 인간 중심적이지 않습니다. 예를 들어 여러분이 스마트폰을 보면서 반려견을 산책시키는 것은 아닙니다. 물론 반려견이 여러분 곁에서 냄새를 맡으며 걷고 있다면, 분명 어느 정도의 인리치먼트 효과는 있습니다. 특히 여러분이 매번
dog, maybe a physical challenge. It definitely has variety. From my perspective, I want to make sure there's some balance. For example, as I said off the top, a lot of people think filling a Kong with all sorts of yummy treasures for your dog to find is enriching. And it is once in a while. I remember when that ice cream place came out that had the marble slab and they would put your ice cream and mix in all sorts of things and mix it all up. Oh my gosh, that was nirvana for me. However, if I'd eaten that every single day, it would cease to be nirvana. Stuffing a Kong with special treasures that your dog can find as they're working through it. Yeah, that is super cool. That is, or can be one form of enrichment once in a while. Every day, not so much. So, let's talk more about what enrichment is not. So, it's not passive. Turning on the TV or turning on a radio, that's not enrichment. That can be distraction. That could be let's say drowned out some of the hotel noise. Don't think you're enriching your dog's life. Enrichment shouldn't be inherently dangerous. For example, some people like to take a laser pointer and get their dogs to chase it. Not only is that potentially dangerous if they get the laser in the eye, it is so dangerous in that it could create an OCD behavior where the dog starts shadow chasing, looking for reflections off your watch onto the ceiling. I've seen so many problems being created because somebody thought it would be fun to have their dog chase a laser pointer. Please, no. Just no. So, enrichment isn't passive. It isn't dangerous. It should not be, please, it should not be overwhelming. Meaning, going to a dog park. You might think, oh, I'm going to enrich my dog's life. I'm going to go to a dog park. Potentially, for some dogs in the right dog park, that could be true. And the same can go for a daycare, potentially with the right dog. And there are some amazing daycares out there, but there's probably an equal number or more that aren't so amazing for your dog. It can be overwhelming. If your dog doesn't have a social need of meeting other dogs, a dog park is the worst place to take them. And a poorly structured daycare that doesn't know how to meet the needs of individual dogs is not the place to take that dog. Good enrichment definitely is not human-centric in that it's not you taking your dog for a walk while you scroll on your phone. Now, if your dog is just sniffing along beside you, yes, there's definitely a level of enrichment there, especially if you go on a

다른 산책 경로를 택한다면 더욱 그렇겠죠. 하지만 여러분이 더 적극적으로 참여한다면, 반려견에게 훨씬 더 높은 수준의 인리치먼트를 제공할 가능성이 매우 큽니다. 마지막으로 가장 중요한 것은, 앞서 언급했듯이 인리치먼트는 단조롭지 않다는 것입니다. 매일 같은 것을 반복하는 게 아니죠. 아무리 멋진 인리치먼트 아이디어라 해도, 그것이 계속해서 효과적일 수는 없습니다. 매일 똑같은 일상만 반복하면서 반려견의 욕구를 충족시켜 주는 것은 매우 중요한 일입니다. 이 점이 너무 중요해서 저희 팀과 함께 활용 가능한 일정표 유인물을 만들었지만, 2부에서 다룰 내용이라 너무 앞서 나갔네요. 지금은 반려견의 본능적인 욕구와 그것을 풍부화 활동을 통해 어떻게 충족시킬 수 있는지에 대해 이야기하고 싶습니다. 232화에서 반려견의 포식 운동 순서에 대해 다룬 적이 있습니다. 이는 야생 개나 늑대가 사냥하던 방식에서 비롯된 주기입니다. 가정에서 기르는 반려견에게는 그 주기가 단계별로 약화되었거나, 혹은 어떤 단계는 더 강화되었을 수도 있습니다. 그 8단계를 다시 한번 상기시켜 드릴게요. 첫 번째는 먹잇감을 발견하고 집중하는 단계입니다. 그다음은 먹잇감을 찾는 탐색 단계이고, 그다음은 살금살금 다가가는 스토킹 단계입니다. 바로 달려들지는 않죠. 먼저 먹잇감에 접근한 뒤 추격하고, 그다음은 입으로 낚아채는 단계입니다. 위험한 행동이 아닌 가볍게 무는 낚아채기 식의 물기입니다. 그 뒤에는 죽이는 물기가 이어집니다. 다음은 내장을 꺼내는 단계이며, 마지막으로 섭취하는 단계가 있습니다. 물론 우리 반려견들에게는 품종 개량을 통해 유전적으로 변형되었지만, 그 모든 요소가 모든 반려견 안에 조금씩은 남아 있습니다. 여러분께 드리는 숙제는, 다음 에피소드에서 반려견의 풍부화 활동을 다룰 때 우리가 활용할 수 있을 만한 요소들을 하나씩 눈여겨봐 두는 것입니다. 먼저 포식 주기의 첫 번째 단계인 '집중 및 포착'부터 시작하겠습니다. 이것은 눈으로 포착하는 것일 수도 있고, '뭔가 보인다'라고 느끼는 것일 수도 있습니다. 코를 이용해 냄새로 포착하거나 귀를 이용해 포착할 수도 있죠. 그런 반려견들에게는 스너플 매트에 간식을 숨겨두면 간식을 찾으며 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있습니다. 반려견이 하루를 보낼 공간에 사료를 뿌려두는 방법도 있습니다. 만약 반려견이 무언가를 좋아하는 성향이라면 이런 식으로 활용할 수 있죠. 시선을 고정하는 것입니다. 반려견을 위한 TV 프로그램 중에는 정말 흥미로운 요소가 있어서 화면으로 반려견의 주의를 끄는 것들이 있죠. 아니면 제 반려견 중 하나인 프로펫처럼 새 모이통을 보는 것을 정말 좋아하는 개도 있습니다. 밖에서는 새를 쫓지 않지만, 저희 집에는 큰 통창이 있어서
different route every single time you take your dog out. However, with a higher level of engagement from you, the potential to have a better level of enrichment for the dog is very probable. Finally, and most importantly, as I mentioned before, enrichment is not monotonous. It is not doing the same thing every day. It doesn't matter how cool of an enrichment idea that is, it will not be meeting your dog's needs when you just do the same thing for them every single day. This is so important that my team and I have put together a handout with a schedule that you can use, but I'm getting ahead of myself because that's for part two. Right now, I want to talk about the instinctive needs of your dog and how that can be fulfilled just through enrichment. In episode number 232, I talked about our dog's canine predatory motor sequence. And that is a cycle that goes back to how wild dogs or wolves hunted. And in domesticated dogs, that cycle has been muted in some different stages, or maybe it's been enhanced in some different stages. So, let me just remind you of those eight stages. First is the alert or orient, a prey potentially. Then it's locate, scan to find it. Then it's stalk. We're not going to take off chasing. We're going to stalk it. Then we're going to chase the prey. We're going to grab it to bite. It's going to be like a grab bite, not anything dangerous. Then it's the kill bite. Then is the evisceration. And then there's a consuming. Of course, our domesticated dogs, that has been altered genetically through breeding. However, there's elements of that that are in every one of our dogs. And here is your homework is I'd like you to start to take note of the things that potentially we can use when we talk about this in the next episode for your dogs enrichment. So, we're going to start with first part of the predation cycle, the alert or orient. That could be orienting with their eyes. I think I see something. Could be orienting with their nose. Could be orienting with their ear. With those dogs, a snuffle mat where you're going to put treats in the snuffle mat and they're going to have fun seeking out those treats. It could be just a food scatter in the environment that you're leaving them in for the day. It could be if you have a dog that likes to orient with their eye. It could be one of those TV shows for dogs that have really cool things that get the dog's attention on the screen. Or if you have a dog like one of my dogs, Prophet, he loves to watch the bird feeder. He doesn't chase birds when he's outside, but we have a big picture window and

그 녀석은 창가에 올라가 새들이 모이통에서 먹이를 먹는 모습을 보는 것을 좋아합니다. 자, 만약 여러분의 반려견이 시선을 고정하거나 경계하는 것을 좋아한다면, 그런 방향의 환경 풍부화를 고려해보게 될 것입니다. 아마 여러분은 반려견이 거의 모든 카테고리에 해당한다고 생각하며, 맞아요, 우리 개는 그걸 정말 좋아할 거야, 우리 개는 이걸 좋아할 거야, 라고 말할지도 모릅니다. 모든 개에게 딱 맞는 하나만 있는 것은 아니니까요. 하지만 제가 카테고리를 하나씩 설명해 나가다 보면, 아, 우리 개가 그러는 모습을 상상할 수 있겠어, 라고 생각하게 될 겁니다. 다음은 '찾기'입니다. 새 모이통이나 TV는 분명 '찾기'를 좋아하는 개들에게 아주 좋을 겁니다. 하지만 푸드 퍼즐은 그런 개들이 간식을 찾는 방법을 스스로 터득할 수 있게 해주니 아주 좋은 도구가 될 것입니다. 쉬운 푸드 퍼즐부터 시작해보세요. 니나 오토슨의 푸드 퍼즐 같은 제품들은 난이도가 단계별로 올라가서 나중에는 정말 어려운 수준의 푸드 퍼즐까지 도전할 수 있습니다. 개들은 머리를 써서 작은 주머니 속에 들어있는 간식을 꺼내는 방법을 알아내는 것을 정말 좋아하죠. 그래서 푸드 퍼즐은 코, 귀, 눈을 사용해 찾는 것을 좋아하는 개들에게 아주 좋습니다. 수건을 이용해 본격적으로 간식 찾기 놀이를 해볼 수도 있습니다. 수건에 간식을 넣고 돌돌 말아서, 그 위에 간식을 더 넣고 또 말아주는 식이죠. 제가 환경 풍부화는 본질적으로 위험한 것은 아니라고 말씀드린 점 기억하시죠? 그러니 만약 수건을 삼킬지도 모른다고 생각되는 개라면, 절대 방치하지 마세요. 마찬가지로 간식을 갈색 종이에 넣고, 작은 공 모양으로 뭉쳐서 상자에 넣고, 그 상자를 또 다른 상자에 넣은 뒤 그 안에 갈색 종이와 간식을 더 넣어주면, 개들이 하나씩 꺼내고 보물을 찾는 재미를 느끼며 긴 시간 즐겁게 놀 수 있을 것입니다. 다음은 스토킹입니다. 스토킹을 좋아하는 개들이죠. 장난감을 천천히 끌어주는 것은 그런 개들에게 매우 재미있는 놀이입니다. 마찬가지로 방향을 조절할 수 있는 전동 장난감도 좋습니다. 무작위로 움직이는 장난감들도 구할 수 있죠. 스토킹을 즐기는 개들은 그런 종류의 장난감도 매우 좋아합니다. 주의할 점은 위험할 수 있으니 이런 장난감을 개 혼자 두어서는 안 된다는 것입니다. 또한 비싼 원격 조종 장난감의 경우, 개가 물어서 잡으려 하거나 심지어 물어서 죽이려는 본능 때문에 장난감을 망가뜨릴 가능성이 매우 높습니다. 이제 추격하기를 좋아하는 개들에 대해 이야기해보죠. 리스트레인트 리콜(제한된 상태에서 부르는 훈련)은 이런 개들에게 아주 효과적입니다. 당신이 직접 달리기 때문에 당신에 대한 가치와 의욕을 높여주기 때문이죠. 또한 플러트 폴(장난감이 달린 막대)은 장난감을 천천히 끄는 것보다 훨씬 빠르게 움직일 수 있어 개들이 쫓기에 좋습니다. 마찬가지로 루어 코싱 기계를 구입할 수도 있는데, 루어 코싱은 시각 하운드들이 하는 것으로, 비록 비닐봉지일 뿐이지만
he loves to get up there and look out at the birds as they're eating at the feeders. Now, if you have a dog that likes to orient or alert, you're going to be thinking about enrichment along those lines. You may find your dog almost every one of these categories, you could say, yeah, my dog would love that. My dog would love that. There isn't just one for every dog. But as I go through the categories, you're going to say, oh yeah, I could see my dog doing that. Next is the locate. Now, probably the bird feeder and the TV is going to be good for the dogs that like to locate for sure. But food puzzles would be a great thing for those dogs that they can find the way you start with easy food puzzles. Like that Nina Alderson's food puzzles, they go up in degrees of difficulty and you can get to some really difficult food puzzles. And dogs love to use their brain to figure out how to get the cookies inside these little pockets. So, food puzzles are a great one for dogs who like to locate nose, ears, eyes. You could get really involved with your scattering in that you could take a towel and put cookies in the towel and roll up and put more cookies and roll it up. Remember I said enrichment is not inherently dangerous. So, if you have a dog that you think might eat that towel, do not leave them unsupervised. Likewise, you could take cookies and put them in some brown paper, roll it up into little balls, throw it in a box, put that in another box, put some more brown paper and some more treats inside of that that will give them time removing things and finding those treasures. So, next is the stalk. Dogs who love to stalk. A slow drag of a toy is a lot of fun for a dog like that. Likewise, one of those motorized toys that you can control the direction of it. You can get some toys that just move randomly. Dogs who like to stalk love those kinds of toys as well. Just a caveat that these aren't things you're going to be leaving your dog alone with because of the danger, but also, if it's an expensive remote toy, there's a very good probability that they're going to do their bite to grab and potentially the bite to kill so they could damage that toy. Now we go to the dogs who love the chase. So, restraint recalls are phenomenal for those dogs because you're running, so that's building value and drive for you. Also, a flirt pole, something that they can chase that you can move a little bit faster than just slow dragging toy. Likewise, you can buy lure coursing machines, which lure coursing are what the sighthounds do where it's actually just a garbage bag, but it's to mimic a

토끼를 모방하여 불규칙하게 움직이기 때문에 추격을 좋아하는 개들은 이런 것을 정말 좋아합니다. 만약 추격을 좋아하는 개가 있고, 당신의 개와 잘 어울리는 다른 개들을 알고 있다면, 함께 산책을 나가서 서로 뛰어놀게 하는 것은, 내가 너를 쫓고 네가 나를 쫓는 식의 놀이가 될 수 있습니다. 안전한 환경에서 뛰어노는 한, 아주 좋은 활동이 될 수 있죠. 하지만 여기에는 큰 주의사항을 덧붙이고 싶습니다. 왜냐하면 우리 개가 다른 개를 쫓는 것을 좋아한다고 해서 애견 공원에 데려가는 것이 항상 좋은 생각은 아니기 때문입니다. 사실, 애견 공원의 특성상 그곳에는 괴롭히는 성향의 개가 있을 수도 있어 오히려 당신의 개에게 정서적으로 큰 상처를 줄 수 있기 때문에 거의 권장하지 않습니다. 다음은 좋아하는 개들입니다. 잡아채는 무는 행동. 자, 그럼 터그 놀이입니다. 터그 놀이는 그런 강아지들에게 정말 훌륭합니다. 여러분은 무언가를 설치할 수 있죠. 강아지 혼자서도 터그 놀이를 할 수 있도록 말이죠. 그래서 많은 불리 품종들은 뒷마당 나무 가지에 매달아 놓은 터그 줄 같은 것을 가지고 있습니다. 저도 잭 러셀 테리어들을 위해 하나 가지고 있었는데 그 녀석들이 밖에 나가서 나무 가지에 매달린 줄을 물고 당기곤 했습니다. 터그 놀이는 정말 좋습니다. 저는 나무와 하는 것보다는 저와 상호작용하는 것을 더 선호하지만, 어떤 강아지들은 그 활동 자체를 매우 좋아합니다. 저와 함께 터그 놀이를 할 때 좋은 점은 놀이를 구조화하여 제가 장난감을 달라고 했을 때 강아지가 이를 내주도록 가르치는 이해력을 키워줄 수 있다는 것입니다. 제가 허락하기 전까지는 뺏으려 하지 않게 하는 것이죠. 그래서 우리는 강아지에게 자제력과 자기 조절 능력을 길러주고 있으며, 이는 특히 터그 놀이를 너무 좋아해서 무는 놀이에 큰 가치를 두는 강아지들에게 항상 좋은 일입니다. 다음은 죽이기 위한 무는 행동입니다. 솔직히 말해서, 우리는 강아지가 실제로 동물을 죽이는 것을 경험하게 해서는 안 됩니다. 그것은 별로 좋은 일이 아니죠. 물론 의도적으로 그렇게 사육되었고 확실한 이유가 있다면, 알아서 하셔도 좋습니다. 100% 괜찮습니다. 하지만 많은 강아지들이 삑삑이 장난감을 좋아합니다. 그래서 잡아채 무는 것을 좋아하는 일부 강아지들은 그냥 삑삑 소리가 나는 장난감을 가지고 노는 것도 좋아합니다. 삑삑이 장난감을 아주 좋아하는 강아지가 있는 반면, 전혀 관심 없는 강아지도 있습니다. 제 보더 콜리들 대부분은 삑삑이 소리를 내는 데 전혀 관심이 없습니다. 물론 그들도 삑삑이 장난감을 가지고 놀긴 하지만 소리를 내는 것에는 정말 관심이 없습니다. 다시 말하지만, 취향이 매우 확실합니다. 어떤 강아지들은 부드러운 삑삑이 장난감을 좋아하고, 어떤 강아지들은 천으로 된 것을 좋아합니다. 참 알다가도 모를 일이죠. 그래서 저는 강아지가 삑삑이를 가지고 놀다가 안에 든 발성체를 뜯어내려고 하지 않는다는 확실한 믿음이 없다면, 혼자 두지 않을 것입니다.
rabbit and it moves in an erratic patterns and dogs who love to chase absolutely love those things. And if you have a dog that likes to chase and you have other known dogs that you know your dog is good with, that they can run together, taking those dogs out for a walk when there's another dog that I'll chase you and then you chase me. As long as it's a safe environment that they're chasing in, that could be a great thing. But I'm going to put a big asterisk with that one because this is where going to a dog park, you know, just because my dog loves to chase other dogs isn't always a good idea. Actually, it rarely is a good idea because of the nature of those dog parks could have a dog that is more of a bully. It could emotionally be very damaging for your dog. Next is the dogs that like the grab bite. Well, hello tug games. Tug games are phenomenal for those dogs. You can rig up something that is just a tug game where the dog tugs by themselves. So, a lot of the bully breeds have like a tethering tug in the backyard hung off of a tree limb. I had one for my Jack Russell Terriers where they would just go out and tug on that, the tether that was hanging from the tree limb. Tug games are great. I prefer them when they are interactive with me rather than with a tree, but there are some dogs that just love that activity. And the great thing about tugging with me is you can structure that into a game that is building the dog's understanding of when I ask for the toy, you give it to me. You don't try and take it unless I tell you can have it. So, we're building some self-control, some self-regulation in that dog, which is always a good thing, especially in those dogs that love to tug so much that they find a lot of value in the bite grab game. Next is the bite to kill. And honestly, we're not going to allow our dogs to experience killing animals. That's not really a cool thing, unless they're purposely bred and you're doing that for absolute reason, then you do you, 100% okay. However, a lot of these dogs love squeaky toys. So, some of the grab bite also love just squeaking squeaky toys. You will find some dogs love squeaky toys and others really could care less. Most of my border collies absolutely have zero interest in squeaking a squeaky. Now they will play with a squeaky. They really don't care. Again, very particular. And some dogs like the soft squeaky, some like the ones that are cloth. Figure that one out. That isn't one that I very likely would leave a dog alone with unless I know for sure that they're not going to be the kind of dog who likes to squeak

따라서 저는 제 강아지를 삑삑이 장난감과 함께 혼자 두지 않을 것입니다. 단지 그 작은 위험 때문이죠. 그리고 만약 그 강아지가 삑삑 소리 나는 장난감을 좋아한다면, 다음 범주인 '내장 꺼내기(eviscerate)'가 있습니다. 만약 여러분의 반려견이 삑삑 소리 나는 장난감을 좋아하고 내장을 꺼내는 것을 즐긴다면, 저는 삑삑이 장난감을 가지고 혼자 두지는 않을 거예요. 하지만 대신 혼자 둬도 괜찮은 '퍼피 밤(puppy bombs)'은 있죠. 제가 이곳 'Shaped by Dog'에서 화장지 심으로 만드는 방법을 이야기한 적이 있는데요. 다시 말하지만, 저는 반려견이 처음 몇 번은 잘 가지고 노는지 감독합니다. 안에 들어있는 간식을 다 먹고 난 뒤 화장지 심을 갈기갈기 찢는 걸 좋아하는지 확인하기 위해서죠. 하지만 종이를 먹지는 않을까요? 저는 제 반려견들이 종이를 많이 먹지 않기를 바라거든요. 다행인 점은 종이가 꽤 생분해가 잘 된다는 거예요. 하지만 만약 종이를 찢어서 먹는 걸 좋아하는 개라면, 그건 제가 같이 있을 때만 하게 할 거예요. 그리고 다 찢어놓으면 작은 조각들을 전부 치워버릴 거고요. 하지만 원뿔 모양 같은 장난감들은 구매할 수 있어요. 예를 들면 벌집 모양 장난감이 있었는데, 그 안에는 아주 작은 벌 인형들이 들어 있었죠. 강아지가 얼굴을 그 안에 들이밀어서 벌집 밖으로 벌 인형을 꺼내는 식이었어요. 그건 '뽑기'를 좋아하는 강아지들을 위한 것이었죠. 제 생각엔 그게 내장을 꺼내는 본능과 관련이 있는 것 같아요. 솔직히 확실히는 모르겠지만, 어떤 개들은 정말 좋아해요. 전혀 관심 없는 개들도 있고요. 오, 그냥 저 안에 있구나, 아무것도 안 하네, 굳이 꺼낼 필요 없겠네 하는 거죠. 그리고 내장을 꺼내는 것을 좋아하는 개들을 위해서, 찢어도 안전한 것이라면 무엇이든 괜찮아요. 그래서 종이는 제가 제 개들에게 찢도록 허락한 유일한 것이에요. 제 경우엔, 저는 제 개들에게 찢으라고 봉제 인형을 준 적이 한 번도 없어요. 사실 저는 개들이 봉제 인형을 절대 찢지 않도록 셰이핑(행동 형성)을 해왔어요. 왜냐하면 인형을 찢다가 내용물을 삼키기라도 하면 정말 비싼 수술을 해야 할 수도 있으니까요. 그래서 내장을 꺼내는 걸 좋아하는 강아지인지 바로 알아보실 수 있을 거예요. 그런 강아지들을 위해 안전한 배출구를 반드시 마련해 주세요. 마지막은 섭취 단계입니다. 끝까지 가서 먹는 것을 좋아하는 개들에게는, 글쎄요, 그 부분에서 바로 속을 채운 콩 장난감이나 토플 장난감, 혹은 릭 매트나 노즈워크 퍼즐 같은 것들이 이런 개들에게 제격일 것입니다. 사실 거의 모든 개가 이런 활동을 풍부한 놀이로 좋아한다고 생각합니다. 하지만 처음에 말씀드렸듯이 진정한 풍부화 활동은 반려견의 마음을 채워줄 수 있어야 합니다. 반려견의 자신감을 키워줄 잠재력이 있어야 하죠. 예를 들어, 혼자 남겨지는 것에 대한 자신감 말입니다. '그래, 주인님이 떠나도 재미있는 일들이 많이 생기니까 괜찮아.' 이런 활동은 여러분과 반려견 사이의 유대감을 개선할 잠재력도 가지고 있습니다.
and then try to rip the squeaker out of the squeaky. So, I wouldn't leave my dog alone with squeakies just because of that small danger. And if they're a dog that likes to squeak, sometimes they also like our next category, which is eviscerate. So, if your dog likes to squeak and eviscerate, then I wouldn't leave them alone with the squeaky. But what you could leave them alone with is puppy bombs. I've talked about that here on Shaped by Dog before where I make them with toilet paper rolls. Again, I supervise my dog for the first few so I know they love to shred the toilet paper rolls after they have eaten the goodies that are inside it. But do they eat the paper? I'd rather my dogs not eat a lot of paper. The good thing is that it's pretty biodegradable. But if I have a dog that likes to shred and eat, then those are things that I'll do when I'm alone. And after they've shredded them, I'll just pick up all the little pieces. But you can buy those toys that are like a cone. So, I had one that was a beehive that there were these tiny little bees that stuffed inside the beehive and the dog would stick their face down and pull the bees out of the beehive. And that was like dogs who like to pluck. I think that's related to the evisceration instinct. I honestly don't know, but some dogs love that. Other dogs could care less. Oh, they're in there. They're not doing anything. I don't need them. And also for dogs who love to eviscerate any shredding, anything that is safe for them to shred. So, paper is the only one that I've allowed my dogs to shred. And for me myself, I've never given my dogs stuffed animals to shred. Actually, I shaped them to never shred stuffed animals because I just think it's dangerous if they happen to swallow some of that, you could end up with a really expensive surgery. So, you'll recognize the puppies or the dogs that love the evisceration. Make sure that you provide for an outlet that is safe for that dog. Finally is the consume. Dogs who love to get to the final end and consume. Well, that's where your stuffed cons and your stuffed topples, maybe your lick mats, food puzzles, those are the things that would come in for those dogs. Now, I think pretty much any dog loves that as an enrichment. But as I mentioned right off the top, true enrichment should fill your dog's cup. It should have the potential to maybe growing confidence, the confidence of a dog being left alone. Yeah, I'm okay because I've got all these fun things that happen when you leave. and your dog. Potential to meet your dog's instinctive needs or meet your dog's emotional needs. That's why we go to all this effort to create an enriching environment for our dogs. So, your homework is go through that predatory motor sequence and really decide what one of those eight sound like your dog and create a list of activities that are true enrichment in that they're safe, they're not passive, they're not overwhelming and create a list.
