우리 팀원 중 한 명이 이웃과 이야기를 나누는데, 이웃이 자기 개에게 전기 목줄을 채웠다고 하더군요. 그 이유는 개가 어린아이에게 으르렁거리기 시작했기 때문이라고 했습니다. 훈련은 무슨, 그냥 개에게 전기 목줄이나 채우자고 생각한 거죠. 하지만 사람들이 모르는 사실은 그런 방식으로 전기 목줄을 사용하면 종종 '전이 공격성'이라는 현상이 발생하여, 개가 오히려 아이를 물 확률이 더 높아질 수 있다는 점입니다. 으르렁거림은 동물이 자신의 감정을 우리에게 표현하는 방식일 뿐입니다. 만약 으르렁거리는 행동에 전기 충격을 가하면, 그 동물이 의사소통할 기회를 빼앗는 셈이 됩니다. 결국 그들에게 남은 유일한 의사소통 수단은 무는 것뿐입니다. 겉보기에는 무언가 효과가 있는 것처럼 보일지 몰라도, 그것은 아주 나쁜 결과로 이어질 시한폭탄일 뿐일 수 있습니다.
somebody on my team said, I was talking to my neighbor, she had an electric collar on her dog. And she said, it's because the dog had started growling at her young child. Why train? Let's just slap an electric collar on the dog. But what people don't know is that an electric collar used in that way can often cause what's called redirection so that the dog actually may have a higher probability of biting the child. A growl is just an animal communicating their emotions to us. And if you zap the growl, you take away the opportunity for that animal to communicate. The only communication they have left is biting. On the outside, it may look like something's working, but it could be just a time bomb waiting to end very, very badly.
