오늘은 '포식 운동 순서(predatory motor sequence)'라고 불리는 것에 대해 이야기해 보려고 합니다. 어떤 사람들은 '포식 순서(predation sequence)'라고도 부르죠. 이것은 사실 늑대 때부터 이어져 온 행동 패턴입니다. 늑대가 사냥하는 방식이자 생존하는 방식이죠. 반려견의 경우 사람들이 선호하는 특정 형질을 위한 집중적인 번식 때문에 포식 순서가 극적으로 변했습니다. 그래서, 이 순서가 어떤 모습인지 하나씩 설명해 드릴게요. 총 8가지의 서로 다른 고유한 단계로 설명됩니다. 첫 번째는 '방향 전환(orient)'입니다. 반려견이 들판에 나가 있는데 무언가 눈에 띄었다고 상상해 보세요. 개들은 몸과 머리를 그 대상을 향하게 합니다. 무언가를 듣거나, 보거나, 냄새를 맡을 수 있겠죠. '방향 전환'은 '주시(eye)'로 이어지는데, 이는 사실 집중하는 것을 말합니다. 그러니까 무언가를 향해 방향을 틀고, '아, 저기 있네' 하고 포착하는 거죠. '주시'를 시작하면 곧바로 '스토킹(stalking, 몰래 다가가기)'으로 이어집니다. 스토킹은 대상에게 살금살금 다가가는 것입니다. 무엇이 스토킹을 유발할까요? 바로 주시할 수 있는 능력입니다. 개 세계에서 아마 가장 잘 알려진 스토커인 보더 콜리조차도 무작위로 스토킹을 시작하거나 무언가를 찾아다니지는 않습니다. 그들은 '주시'라는 트리거가 작동한 뒤에 스토킹을 합니다. 이 순서의 네 번째 요소는 '추격(chase)'입니다. 즉, 추격할 때까지 스토킹을 하는 것이죠. 그다음에는 두 가지 다른 방식의 물기로 넘어갑니다. 다섯 번째 요소는 '잡기 위한 물기(bite to grab)'이고, 여섯 번째 요소는 '죽이기 위한 물기(bite to kill)'입니다. 네, 조금 끔찍하게 들릴 수도 있다는 거 압니다. 하지만 아시나요? 반려견 대부분이 이 전체 주기를 다 겪지는 않을 거라고 확신합니다. 물론 일부는 그럴 수도 있겠죠. Today we're going to be talking about something that is called the predatory motor sequence, or some people call it predation sequence. It's actually a pattern of behavior that goes back to wolves. It's how wolves hunt. It's how wolves stay alive. The predatory sequence has changed dramatically in domesticated dogs because of the intense breeding for certain traits that people loved. So, let me walk you through what this sequence looks like. It's described as eight different unique events. First one is orient. So, imagine your dog's out in the field and something just catches their eye. They orient their body and their head to that. They could hear something, they could see something, they could smell something. Orient turns into eye, which really is focus. So, they orient to something's out there, boom. All right, I gotcha. So, as soon as they start to eye, then that will lead into stalking. Stalking is creeping up on whatever. What triggers the stalking? The ability to eye. So, you're not going to see even a border collie who is probably the best known stalker in the canine world. You're not going to see them just randomly start stalking and looking for something. They stalk after the trigger of the eye. The fourth element in this sequence is chase. So, they stalk until they chase. And then it moves into two different ways of biting. So, element number five is the bite to grab. Element number six is the bite to kill. Okay, it's getting a little gruesome. I know. You know what? I'm pretty sure that your domesticated dog, not many of them are going to go through this entire cycle. Some will though. After the bite to kill or the kill bite as it's better known, leads to the evisceration, the dissection of the animal. And that leads to the consumption of the animal. So, that's the eight events that happened in this predatory motor sequence. Now, as I mentioned before, because of the intense breeding that humans have done to the domestic dog, they've actually accentuated some parts of the sequence. They've actually removed other parts of it. And in some breeds, rearranged the sequence. Different breeds have been bred to actually highlight different parts of the sequence. Knowing that will help you to bring the best enrichment to your dog, to not fight against what's there and hopefully not to deny nor reinforce randomly the things that the dog is innately driven to do. Because it's really important. It's really going to affect your ability to train your dog to the best of your ability. So, you you you
